New Account for a new Commander

Since it seems like it's going to be a long time before we see additional commander slots I'm very tempted to take advantage of the Black Friday deal to get a second copy of the base game.

I know some people have already done this so I have a few questiosn if anyone can answer them.
1. Do I have to register it with a new email address or can I use my existing one
2. If I use my existing one do my paint jobs transfer?
3. As above but for life time expansion pass I got as a beta backer?
$. Do you think this is FDev's grand plan, don't give them the extra slots, make them buy the game multiple times? ;)

I'm also tempted by this sale, just for the extra CMDR slot. But...
... I'm wondering if I'll have to install the entire game twice on the same machine?

Pretty sure that's not the case. You just login with the different credentials.

Confirmed.

1. You need to use a new email address, you would then login with that on the launcher to access your other account.
2. No, for all intents and purposes it's a completely different account. You cannot have two accounts under one email.
3. No, as 2.
4. Yes. :) Double skin sales, double expansion sales, half the bandwidth costs!

Paintjobs and expansion pass are tied to the unique account. A newly purchased account would be totally separate on all parts.

As others have answered, except, the launcher may try to install a second copy of the game, depending on what version you currently have. If you have Alpha, Premium Beta, Beta or the Mercenary pack - then the current retail copy will attempt to install as an additional install.

Yeah that's a bit annoying to be honest, mine has mercenary pack ED installed for my primary then standard ED for the second account. The only thing that's different is the folder name! I spose it's only 5GB though, not the end of the world.

But then again I think with Horizons it's new launcher time anyway so unless you have Horizons for both your accounts then you will likely end up with two installs anyway.

A good deal for new players who can unlock the Cobra Mk IV (with the acquisition of Horizons after). And also for those who want to make a gift. As already said in another thread

:)

Why not just buy extra ships for the different activities, that way you only spend in game
credits and not hard earned cash.

If your main is 1000's of ly out in the black and your buddy wants a hand in a CZ you can just log on the second account and play with them.
I also picked up a 2nd account a few months ago for playing an ironman game. Ironman with my main with the 1000's hours of effort, reputations and cash on the line was just too hardcore for me. Besides sometimes its fun to reset and start a new journey. A second account lets me experiment all for less than the price of a single night out :)

If you are 50,000ly from home, your hundreds of ships back in the bubble aren't going to help you. I'll grab an account for two reasons - I can use the second account to go crazy, don't have to care about keeping rep or worrying about a wanted status at the ports where my ships are docked all over the bubble.

Second reason is to have another account for when shared cockpits/bridges are released and mates are over, two identical rigs in VR so they can cruise around with me.

Why would you want a second copy of the Game?

I want to start from scratch, I like the early game of most RPG's, the feeling of vulnerability, the sense of progression.

But I do not want to give up my fleet, my ranks, my faction, or my commanders story.

Thanks you sir +rep

It IS quite possible to have just one copy of the actual game files (important when you're using an SSD for the main drive which isn't as big as you might like if it were a 'proper' HDD).

I have 2 accounts. They each have their own Windows user (caveat - I've stayed with Win 7) because I wanted to have separate user config files in case I let another family member "have a play".

So ... how to do it?

I started out by downloading the launcher and installing it. It went in the standard location so it's - C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch

Then I created a folder in there called "Products". (I seem to recall trying the singular version which didn't work.)

Then when you install the game, betas, single-user demo ... they get created in that folder NOT within the user documents folder.

When you play the settings get created (as seems usual) in - C:\Users\{WindowsUserName}\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options

I can't recall who first wrote this up (it's somewhere in the forums) so it's not me to thank.

Nice thing is that apart from creating the one extra folder there's no more mysterious fiddling.

As the game/launcher seems quite happy with this clearly Frontier have set it up but I don't understand why it isn't the default setup (or at least a selectable option) the first time the launcher is installed. You can't - as far as I can figure it out - use this to have multiple commanders from just one Frontier/Elite account because the save is done "in the cloud" so no matter which Windows user you were on they'd still end up with the same position in-game. But as long as each Windows user has their own Frontier/Elite account then it works fine.

And it saves a bit of disk space - currently with game, 1.5 beta and single-user demo it comes to 12.3 GB. Not massive right now but I wonder how much that will expand with the new stuff in Horizons (and beyond).

I should add - this works for me.

I'm guessing it'll work for others too but if you decide to try ... take good backups & expect me to keep my head down if you start moaning on here.
