It was declared officially extinct wednesday by the United States, its extinction probably dating back to the 1930s.

I don't know where you got your information but the American Cougar, Mountain Lion, Florida Panther, Puma is officially listed at "LC" least concern. It is certainly not extinct.
A quick google tells me that it is the eastern cougar subspecies that is extinct. Cougars in general are doing OK.

Yes, this is the puma from east US. Here the link (you will translate the page) --- http://www.20minutes.fr/planete/680250-20110303-planete-les-cougars-officiellement-disparu

I'm pretty sure that, like huge numbers of Easterners, they took General Custer's advice and went west.

OK so that sounds flippant, but for an intelligent animal such as a large cat, it isn't beyond imagination that that is exactly where they went.

I have seen a black puma in woodland around Andover. Locals tell me there are a number of them living there and have been there since at least the 60s.

These creatures are very elusive and avoid human contact. It makes sense they would leave areas where huge numbers of humans build cities.

And here I was wracking my brain trying to recall a Cougar elite ship design, wondering if I should be sad, angry, or indifferent about this. (oh noez! the Lanner is gone for good?!)

I bet it would have been awesome. A militarized version of a Lion transport, or Panther Clipper, perhaps. Or maybe its own particular class of "big and bricky".

But regarding extinct Cougars: An odd thing about "calling something extinct" is that it is specific to a particular region. Its like saying "Border patrol Alligators went extinct along the Rio Grande". That doesn't necessarily mean alligators are gone everywhere, and are most likely still patrolling the Florida swamps to this day. [/tinhat] :)
