News From orbit down to Europa

It is, but is being overridden overtly rather than covertly - as each wheel as a directable thruster in it (visible in some of the multiplayer videos we've uploaded), which can stick you to the surface.

Here's a video of what came next. The tumbling down the slope (oops) gives an indication of how this works. You can correct a fall using a thruster, but this didn't quite go right, except at the end... :)

Oh dear, that's some badly broken audio, and a terrible framerate. Youtube, please stop being so incredibly unreliable and unstable.

Not sure what to Think about the Graphics really for the planet Surface. Looks like voxel technology from old outcast game in the video. Craters look strange
Not realistic looking planet Surface in my opinion, especially when entering orbit.

Also, the landing site ground looks like it is missing texture?

Hopefully its just the video compression from Youtube.

I'm blaming youtube for all quality issues until i get into the game and see this stuff for myself. ;)

You have seen planet/ice moon surface with your eyes? :)

It's ice.

Nice job. Transition is smooth (hopefully, it will stay like that on live server too), and I especially liked that we can get fairly close to surface while keeping OC speed.

Have you guys thought of trying another color for the new UI elements? Since we'll be looking at those while we have planets in front of us, shouldn't they be a bit darker?

They look fine on the Rocky and Metal planets we've seen in the sneak peeks. Maybe one that adapts to the changes in background is a bit much to ask for ;)

Hey David, i tought you could stand together with other player in some hangars on the planet and look at their ships, but the standart hangar is just boring. I appreciate your work, but dident you tell us the transition from space to planet would happen without a loadingscreen? Couse i saw a loadingscreen and would like some answers.

What's nagging me is that it isn't unavoidable...the glide mode would be the perfect way to mask that transition.

It's not the end of the world...it's more a kind of "oh so close but yet so far away" moment. ;)

Well the only way I can see how it could work is that the game starts prefecthing instances when you go near a planet station, and then when you do come out of SC the instance is already there so to speak. Then yes it should be seamless if that is possible.

But that would require a lot of work, and you also then need to worry about NPC traffic as well.

Unless FD go down the dedicated server route I can't see it anytime soon.

Its a transition from OC/SC into normal flight. Can't see anything being loaded myself.

OMG, its fantastic. And its seamless. Well this settles it. Monday cant come fast enough :) Very nice sneak peek David. This answers all the "seamless" questions to.
Have a nice weekend :)

It not a loading screen (in the sense you think), its the transition between instances that are loading which is currently unavoidable.

Thanks for clarification. :)

Yes they are... They just happen to be on the other side of the planet... You may notice it's 1.58Mm from the surface to core of europa.
No, they aren't. :p You can see them close to Jupiter during the approach. Also notice that they are on the same hierarchy level as Europa, i.e. they are orbiting Jupiter and not sub-targets on the moon.

EDIT: Already clarified, as I see.

This was just uploaded as well.... Dunno if it's been posted before. Very choppy frame rate though.

He's not talking about the RES, he's really talking about the named 'outposts' at a distance of around 2Mm.

Yea judging by the sync between video and sound I'd say either Youtube isn't finished completely processing the vid or Youtube botched up during the upload. I don't think the choppy crappy frame rate is on Braben's end.

Right now the proccess goes like this:

Orbital cruise - supercruise instance
"Shake" - no instance and therefore invisible to others since you have dropped the SC one and not yet connected to the new one.
Glide - new instance

What I'm proposing is "simply" that people drop directly to "Glide" even if they in the beginning of this phase from a network point of view will not be connected to any instance (like SOLO mode if you like), the same thing as the "shake". Then, as the connections have been made you enter that instance and "fade into view" for other players.

Can we not talk about Braben's end please, although now that I think about it, thats a great name for a starport! :)

Certainly sounds like a sane idea.
