Well, I never knew this. Could explain a lot about pirating...

I was interdicted by an NPC in a Federal Dropship (with no shields... yeah.... that's a good idea, pal!). He tried to pirate me. I meant to target his powerplant but managed instead to target the cargo hatch before I had to stop pressing Y over-and-over and fly the damned ship. Something odd happened. He started to drop cargo. I was hitting (presumably) the cargo hatch with multicannon and free stuff was dropping out!

I never knew that happened. I thought you needed to use hatch breakers for this (which is the whole point of having them in the game!).

This opens up a whole new approach for Pirates, of course, rather than offer an ultimatum to the other pilot you can simply blast the cargo hatch, without the need to completely destroy the vessel, turning a "Murder" into a "Robbery with Violence". OF course it'll be marked as "illicit cargo", which is less nice than the other person abandoning it so it isn't, but....

I did not know that happened. Did anyone else?

But... IF this is right, what the heck are hatchbreakers for?

Yes, that's how it works. Destroy the door, stuff will fall out. That's how pirating was done before limpets were invented. ;)
The problem with this is - Sometimes you destroy the ship sooner than the cargo hatch. Limpets don't leave damage.

If they only put high credit cargo on those NPC's! It would take the pressure of those that do not desire PVP!

Hmmm, can we get ships to drop SRVs?.... is the sort of question I imagine being asked at some point.

One could argue that the SRV is cargo and could float in to space like any other, though I suspect FD would (rightly) hand-wave that one aside for game-play reasons. Losing your SRV could really put a downer on your day, I guess.

People want to be able to steal other people's ships...so maybe this would be a first step towards that! Since there are supposed to upgraded SRV's, this would be an interesting gameplay mechanic!

I'm inclined to think that the pirate is wimping out if he demends "abandoned " cargo... Isn't the life of a pirate meant to be on the wrong side of the law? He doesn't mind robbing me but won't get his hands dirty with a little smuggling? Wusses! :p

When I was out exploring way out, I managed to pick up enough minor damage through inatention that my cargo hatch malfunctioned and I lost all the salvage I'd picked up... Ho hum

I don't think targeting the Cargo hatch breaks the door open and things fall out, I would like to think cargo is fixed in place somehow and not rattling around inside. It's probably more likely it gets jettisoned as a malfunction.

Hatch Breaker Limpets are to be used to gain access to to cargo with out gaining a fine or bounty, I thought?

Indeed it would.

Now, get back to defending your backwater system. :D

Nah...just looking for another reason to kill you...and pick up their cargo afterwards.

Backwater? If we were any closer to Sol...we'd be fighting there! LOL! :p

That's just it, though. I didn't destroy his hatch as his hull gave way first (brutal, but he DID start it!). But it seemed that everytime I got a good burst into it the hatch went a bit incontinent and jettisoned some "stuff". Unfortunately I had a full cargo hold, so....

But I have to tell you, this is going to revolutionise the way I deal with NPC pirates. :)

Or indeed PC Pirates. :p

But yeah, the downside to this system as a pirate, apparently, is that at best you'll get a dozen things released before the ship is destroyed.

Well... just so you know... if the other player turns off their cargo hatch on the power screen and you blow it out... no cargo will come out because the hatch is turned off. Hatchbreakers will also not work.

The way it should work is you disable CMDR drives, their ship stops moving (unrealistic but I don't care), you blow their hatch, all their cargo spills out, take what you want and be on your way, regardless of whether they have the hatch disabled or not.

I would love to steal other player ships! Or better yet... hijack their ships as they drive around in their rover and hold it for ransom when they come back.

"Oh, you like this ship, do you? Well just so happens I found it with a broken engine. It was terrible, I tell you. Smoke everywhere. Anyways, it's your lucky day. See, I'm a mechanic, and I fixed it. No need to thank me... yet. But, see, I have a problem, I used all my best parts and my poor disabled grandmother was depending on those parts and well... long story short... I need one million credits by... today! So if you kindly credit me one million, I'll be glad to release your ship. Well, you don't have to. She likes ships--especially ones like these. Come to think of it... this ship would be perfect for her! Parts are already installed, why... I could bring it over to her now..."

Emergent gameplay is great. :)

...and why was I thinking about the poor Type 9 pilot...who spent the last 4 months paying for that pitiful flying warehouse...with the 8 million in cargo...just floating in space...waiting to be returned to station in their cryo pod...crying, as the tears slowly crawl over their face...nearly engulfing their mouth and nose...drowning them slowly.

A tangengtial thought has just occurred to me: if we ever get ship boarding and the possibility of actually stealing someone's ride, how will this scenario play out?

Trader Andy has finally saved enough for an Anaconda. He's so pleased that he drops £10 real world cash on a shiny gold skin which he applies to the Anaconda. Pirate Betty decides to board Andy's ship, "murder" (or eject) him and steal it. Videomaker Charlie gets wind of what's going down and films the whole thing on his external camera. Charlie's camera is pointed directly at Andy's ship at the moment Betty takes it.

What colour is Betty's stolen Anaconda? ;)

To answer a few random questions I saw while skimming through the thread.

Using a hatch breaker limpet counts as assault and will result in a bounty.

Hatch breaker limpets also do nothing to prevent dropped cargo from being marked "stolen".

And you don't actually have to get the cargo hatch down to 0% to get it to start spitting out cargo. I believe this can actually start happening as soon as 85%, with more and more coming out as it gets closer to 0%. Also worth noting that the lower a ships hull% the easier it is to damage modules.
