Planets grapihics quality leaves a lot to be desired

Lets just say that I will have to bite the dust if the graphics are more impressive once beta opens compared to Brabens video :)

Guys guys guys... Let's stop fooling ourselves. OP is right. There are so many things in this game from mildly unsatisfactory to outright horrendous, I prepared the following template. Fill in as you see fit.

This rant is important to me. There are some things in this game, which I payed for out of my hard earned fortune, that doesn't live up to my expectations. As an example <insert your pet peeve about the game here> is simply unacceptable in a game made in 2015. Also <feature unique to ED> is a hundred times worse than it's version in <pretty unrelated game in another genre>.

How can FD go out and advertise this piece of 'software' as worthy of 50 euros is beyond me. FD, be ashamed of yourself.

Sincerely,

CMDR <your username here>

- Please buff/nerf <perfectly good feature here>
- Please take my <yet another foolish non-objective poll>
- I got killed by a CMDR when I had no insurance and was wanted and I want him <banned/punished/hung from a yardarm>
- I am rage quit because <insert dangerous feature here> is too hard and I ain't so good at this here space thing game.
- Game is too hard and grinding is boring and it's <anyone but myself) fault!

Yup, again, you can find loads of beautiful pictures of the Sahara desert. But there will be hundreds of square miles of boring sand, all the same texture. All the same colour.

I know you won't accept featureless blandness and I get you want rocks. But my point is these planets are still mostly barren, you haven't yet seen all of them, you've only seen a tiny fraction of a couple planets, and you've yet to see high resolution imagery.
^^^^^^ this ^^^^^

I'm pretty sure there'll be pretty places to discover on ED's planets. Maybe not quite as pretty as they'd been in real life, but good enough for a "v1.0" attempt (and just look at how much better planets have gotten since ED v1.0 was released last Xmas).

If the moon graphics looked like this..

I'd be really happy. The problem is that currently (as shown in previews) the game renders a relatively unstimulating landscape even more so by having a single repeating texture run through everything and very little variation in the few things that you would expect to see on rocky planets, ie- rocks.

This is the Outtera engine for comparison..

It's still just rocks and dirt (minus a bit of grass, ignore that)... it just looks way cooler.

Outterra is a single hand-crafted planet, not one of billions of procedurally generated planets. It is pretty difficult to build an engine that generates a variety of realistic landscapes --not just one type of landscape, but a whole range of them-- with underlying geology so we can have some relevant crafting game play around that. So please, no linking to hand-crafted scenery. It's a totally different thing.

Find out tomorrow. See you from my Roflcopter :). Hope it's good though (like £40 good). If so will eat hat with monkey sauce.

I've seen several scattered rocks in the videos we've seen. Now, I think they look a little "tacked on" and they don't look embedded. So I'll reserve judgement until I actually see more. But you've suggested you think the surface is 100% without features and I'm not sure that's right at all.

And I can find a featureless image of the moon:

Flat and very grey. I'm certain there are many places on the moon that are even more featureless. But the thing is, most images you'll see are nice ones. With great lighting. Of nice features.

To further drive my point home (in a post where I was actually agreeing with you):

I'll bet that, within a day or two of beta release, we'll get to see loads of beautiful images of features.

It's cool, I don't expect too much at this stage and I'm sure players will be posting nice screenshots, I also can't wait to dive in- this is obviously a big step for ED. Don't know what the plan is for graphics and maybe things will look a bit different on actual release. Or 1 or 2 years out. But a big achievement so far.

The real test will come with Earth like Worlds.

I knew I shouldnt have read thru this... such a waste but you guys sure make me laugh! Cheers for tomorrow

You'll have to die? :D

I don't think your opinion deserves that haha.

Oh... I did not know it meant that exactly. :)

Cheers, lets continue this thread when beta is live then and the graphs still suck :)

Outerra is not hand crafted, it is procedural. It is probably the best procedurally generated terrain generation software on the market.

So let me get this straight - you saw one badly encoded YouTube video, which is actually cool in my opinion and looks great as far as YouTube videos goes (with weak lightning it seems YouTube really goes off the rails with compression, not a first time for ED) - and you jump to conclusions quality is not up to par?

Also sorry to break this to you, but majority of planets are very barren and very boring places. Without atmosphere there's nothing to happen, nothing to change - except for early bombardments - so there's no really rough edges, or interesting cliffs... However as seen in streams they feel *realistic*. And that's what I take away from ED - it doesn't try to please you 100% all the time. It is not possible and would get repetitive and boring very soon afterwards.

As for bases not being "alive" - it is same issue with stations, and I agree it is issue. It takes huge amount of time and it is not big priority right now. It is just math - people mostly want to play game, not experience it to maximum. I would want to see more life around stations. It feels like no brainer. But consider this - if you emulate NPCs, you have to write rules to spawn them to interact with them, etc. I wish had developer and artist working just on PvE part of the game, but that's highly unlikely gonna happen this soon. They still want to rollout incredible amount of features, so understand that they want to do this - it is just matter of 'how' and 'when'.

On the small scale details yes, Outerra does PG superbly. But on the large scale it depends on 10 Gigs of SRTM data to make it look as good as it does.

The visual presentation of this kickstarter is just staggering. I have no interest in discussing this game's other features, but there are no transitions - it's truly seamless.
This looks 2015.

It does look impressive.

As does NMS.

But I don't think I'll be buying either (I won't explain why, you don't want to discuss the other features) ;)

Creating good textures are always a challenge for any artist. I don't know what the scope is for the game, and by scope I mean the computer target group.
I would really like to see the cobra engine be used to the max regarding graphics for sure. I know we don't have atmosphere on the planets, but this was done in the Unreal engine.
