So I played Elite Dangerous over the weekend for the first time :)

Greetings Pilots!

I've tried out Elite Dangerous for the first time over the last weekend after having my sights on it ever since the Kickstarter Campaign - and I can honestly say I haven't stopped playing since.

I went head first into the Elite experience having no prior knowledge of the Elite franchise to begin with (I just simply love sci-fi) - and I love it through and through.

That first time I opened the map and it took me a while to realize...."wait a minute....I can go to all these places?!" - it was hard to put in words.

And just yesterday I bought my very first new ship and put a lid on the good ol' sidewinder newbie ship (what difference it makes!!)

I also loved the music!!

One of my favorite part so far was the fact that the developers gave a nudge to 2001: A Space Odyssey while docking.

Something I also really liked is that focus on the pilot and the player's place in the universe, rather than making the game about large battles and fleets.

I read an interview where it was said that it wouldn't make much sense to have pilots fly huge capital ships as it would take away from the more personalized experience - and I say I have to agree.

One thing that struck me - and I was wondering if anyone else saw a similarity here - is that the elite dangerous world as portrayed in the latest game seemed very similar to Alien: Isolation (?).

I'm looking forward to the upcoming expansion and so here are my thoughts for future development:

- More ships!
- Never remove the single player mode, it's a fantastic addition to this kind of game
- More NPC traffic around space stations
- More interstellar traffic of ships warping in and out (mainly NPCs)
- New types of missions
- A more customizable character (I fear that the upcoming facial customization of characters may be little more than cosmetic. I'd love to see the ability to create a biography for my character perhaps, or something else that would really allow me to "define" my character)

- Ground combat perhaps (?)
- I noticed the characters created with the upcoming character creator have really large heads - I hope that's being addressed.

- Add spacial anomalies
- Player housing (give us the ability to either create our own space station or claim a planet for ourselves and create a building on it for us to live in)

- Create more of an incentive to go out and explore. Perhaps a conspiracy narrative / ARC of an upcoming alien invasion or an old alien derelict spacecraft being found that will have players go out and look for clues....some narrative (which I think is lacking a bit at the moment)

- Escape pods (when I die, my ship computer asks me to eject - but I don't think I can?)
- One thing I noticed at the beginning when I still learned to play the game is that when you're out of fuel, you're basically dead. I know that in the persistent multiplayer world there are components that allow you to refuel ships while in space - but I think this only works if you have a friend around? What I'd love to have is a "Distress Call" future that will send out a distress call to any nearby ships (NPC or otherwise) - asking for help if you're in a critical situation. This may also apply to combat when you're under attack by a pirate. So many times in games its about killing others, but it would be nice to allow people to help each others - even if you're complete strangers.

- Different ships should have different "out-of-the-box" features. So you know when you look at the right display and you can set your ship lights and beacon on/off? I'd love to see different ships have different functionalities here. Like perhaps one ship has a built-in [insert system here] that you can toggle only for that ship.

- Sun-shade for your cockpit (I think it would be neat if ships would have a sun-shade that could be toggled on or off which would roll down your windshield and either shield your eyes from the extreme sun light when you're close to it, or even help temperature spikes.)

- Combat drones? :)

- Also it would be nice to make the auto turret which shoots down rockets to do so without having any visual lock of the missile, as I usually am too busy running away from it, rather than trying to face it. :p

That's all I could think of at the moment - perhaps some additional interface tutorials would help as well, as I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to buy certain minerals in the store when I had the money. I could look this up on google (and probably will) but having it in-game (unless I missed it) would be nice.

All in all - fantastic game! Enjoying it through and through.
Can't wait for the future!

Welcome!
Pretty much awesome first impressions, reminded me of exactly what I felt and thought when starting. Most of what you say I agree with too :)

A few points below:
Running out of fuel. There's a free rescue service here, they are awesome: http://fuelrats.com/

Sun shade - Your helmet visor auto-adjusts for a lot of the glare, look at background stars when close to the local star, then fly away from the star and you'll notice the background ones become brighter and more visible as the filter toggles off. A user customised option would be nice though.

Welcome again and good luck CMDR :D

There is player group called fuel rats, they are players who come to refuel you if you are out off fuel. http://fuelrats.com/

You can have point defend turrets on utility mounts and those will shoot down missiles, rockets and limpets, if they have line of sight (some ships have utility mounts placed so those can fire behind you).

Some players want housings some don´t. If i remember correctly fd won´t give us own space stations (not even to player group), but ability to have asteroid place have been mentioned long time ago or something similar.

We get more missions every update

NPC traffic is two sided problem because some times you need to wait for free landing pad for bigger ships.

Sunshade for your cockpit?

In the days when you could (1996) the wife and I spent a few mins in the flight deck of a split new BA 747 flying to LA.

We noted with amusement a copy of the sun cellotaped to the portside canopy as a sunshade.

I think for various safety reasons the plane does not come with a sunvisor!

lol don't think of them as 'shades' in terms of 1996 fabric.
More like window tints a la Blade Runner "Tyrell Corporation"

People have different preferences, a sandbox space sim should have some capital ships available to players. Like Mothership class capitals depend on smaller ships for protection so it's very suitable. Maybe we'll get that during season 3.

Yeah like busy space-shuttle traffic between stations and planets.

- New types of missions

Missions for wings.

For roleplaying yes.

- Ground combat perhaps (?)

First person combat will come later, I guess season 3.

- Add spacial anomalies
- Player housing (give us the ability to either create our own space station or claim a planet for ourselves and create a building on it for us to live in)

I also like deeper crafting with the sandbox.

Stars can be blinding when you warp in.

- Combat drones? :)

New players do need more tutorials to help them learn the ropes.

Thanks for all the lovely comments so far!

Btw - is it normal for me to start up the persistent world and not really run into anyone?
It felt very empty apart from some NPC ships I ran into.

It´s there . Do a search about "Unknown Artifact" or "Canonn" right on these forums. Also, there´re always things going on that can be found on GalNet

- Escape pods (when I die, my ship computer asks me to eject - but I don't think I can?)

Your ship tells that you are about to be ejected actually. Then you go out in an escape pod (but that part we don´t see, but rather go right to the insurance screen)

Do a search for "fuel rats". It´s a player made group that devote themselves to do just that. You can join them at any time.

- Sun-shade for your cockpit (I think it would be neat if ships would have a sun-shade that could be toggled on or off which would roll down your windshield and either shield your eyes from the extreme sun light when you're close to it, or even help temperature spikes.)

It´s already there, preventing us from getting fried when we are close to stars. We don´t have any control over switching it on or off though (and I don´t miss it, personally)

- Combat drones? :)

There will be AI controlled drones protecting ground bases in Horizons

All in all - fantastic game! Enjoying it through and through.
Can't wait for the future!

Absolutely agreed

Sorry for the messy post and for not including links, I don´t have much time now.
Welcome to the galaxy. Fly safe (and keep some credits for insurance at all times)

If you are not in Open mode then you'll never see people.

Even in open yeah, space is huge. Generally outside of central hubs you won't see anyone, it makes those rare encounters that bit more interesting :)

If you want to see people head to the "Lave" area as there's a ton of rare goods for sale there, although be prepared for encounters to start with laser fire from pirates...
Otherwise the community goals areas are pretty solid when there's an event going off: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=187372 (Currently no events at time of writing).

Finally getting involved in player groups or the Mobius private group is a sure-fire way of finding people to make friends with :)

When I first started playing, I got stuck out of fuel in a system without a station... since then, I've mounted a Fuel Scoop in every ship that I take more than 2 jumps in.

I remember one scenario, right after getting my new Vulture combat ready. I'd dropped into a Strong Signal Source (SSS), and found a pile of gold waiting for me. Anxious to try out my new beast, I engaged the first of 4 Anacondas as soon as they appeared.

Managed to drop one, but ran out of Shield Cell Banks (SCB) and lost my shields. At that point, I noticed 2 new blips had joined the battle... both CMDRs, and they jumped right in and helped me take out the remaining three. When I asked them how they were able to find me so quickly, they replied that they had been stalking me for a while :D

Point Defense turrets have already been pointed out, but the other option is to just ignore the missile as long as your shields are still up. When I first started playing, I also panicked when notified of an incoming missile, but I learned rather quickly that they do nothing to my shields.

That's too bad - back in the 80's, an incoming missile was likely to mean your death. I've heard rumors that this may change in the future, and I look forward to seeing it!

There will be many of the features you mention in the future, however we don't know how it will be?

Enjoy commander, and play some other games once a while so you don't burn out :) Right now I'm playing L.A Noire in between ED sessions. Great game BTW.

It's a mighty big galaxy, even in open you can avoid human contact for months if you wish.

Look for Cg's and other community events in the forums.

Lysan !! I miss you man, buy yourself an aurora package, and come visit us in the ED katamari

Those are the bobbleheads. ;) ^_^

awesome thanks! :)

A few other good places to visit if you want to find other CMDRs to interact with:
The home systems of the Powers in Powerplay (so for example Gateway in Alliance territory is the home system of Edmund Mahon, so gets pretty good traffic).
Sol, if you have the permit. Shinrarta Dezhra, likewise.

Glad to have you, CMDR. My to do list grows faster than I can check it off. If you follow the threads here, you will see so many cool things others are doing or seeing and you have to check it out. I finally got around to hitting the Ceos and Sothis systems this weekend (populated systems far outside the bubble) and they did not disappoint. With Horizons and so many more changes, it makes me a little nuts....in a good way I suppose.

Welcome.
