Ashamed to admit it, but testing just isn't for me (anymore)...

Don't get me wrong. I love ED, and want FD to succeed. But besides the original "beta" (specifically, premium beta a year and a half ago) I haven't helped with testing. And tonight reminded me why: I downloaded Horizons to see what all the fuss is about, and it is indeed very cool. But the bugs.... Oh, the bugs. Thankfully many/all of the ones I encountered have been logged on the bug forum - like entire planet surfaces disappearing but bases remaining (thought they were new star ports at first), flying/driving below planet surfaces etc.

So, I think I'll put down my beta copy and let you hardcore testers do all the heavy lifting. I'm ashamed to admit it, but testing just isn't for me. But I DO appreciate all the effort by the community engaged in testing. Not to mentioned FD's heroic efforts to fix the bugs. Thanks in advance, and please do carry on! :)

First time I'd been back in the game since the reset last Nov. Forgot I only got a sidewinder now, plus a free ship somewhere, not sure where. But Having a little fun on and around planets. But I'll probably leave it for a month or so, now I've seen them. Let it calm down, I had two ctd's so thought I would end it there.
But coming back to have a better look soon. Its good to see something in the game that could develop into something really good. ;)

There's no shame to it.

I bought the beta for Elite back in 2014 and tested it until release. After release though I never once fired up any of the betas this year. Just not for me.

So when it came to buying Horizons I just bought the regular edition, no beta for 2016. I'd just never play it anyway.

I'll just wait for the official releases of each patch. Plenty else to do in the meantime.

Personally after Frontier First Encounters i decided to not beta test any other game, Elite Dangerous included.
Disclaimer: i have the life pass but only for content, not beta test. I prefer to play the game when most of the most obvious bugs are fixed, not to mention usually i have very limited time to play.

I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I fire up the betas, but not for any sense of obligation to help FD or anyone else.

Duh - I do it for my own purposes.

Logging into the beta and trying new stuff helps me acclimate faster to the new changes and preposition myself to where I want to be when the release comes out. I paid for that privilege.

I don't owe FD or anyone else anything.

You get rep for remembering that beta is for testing, not just for willy waving and selfies. Few people actually test, so don't feel bad.

At some point in the distant past, if memory serves, wasn't beta testing free and doled out to a cherry picked few of a game's fans who had to apply for the honor? In that case, I'd say feeling obliged to help out is more than reasonable. As things are now, it's just a kind gesture. Regardless, I'm sure FD still gets usage info statistics and the like that they can use to help troubleshoot things during a beta, while having the freedom to do so on a work-in-progress version of the game.

I personally mostly just like playing around with the new kit, but in testing things and getting them to work, I'll do my small bit and share that with the community and FD alike.

Paid for early access not to be a beta tester.

Mind you, would report bugs as I go along, but didn't find anything.

The most annoying thing at the moment is the time to exit orbital or super cruise and I'm sure they know that already.

Horizons is the first beta test I've taken part of since PB, I have to say, it's so good that it will be hard for me to play the base game until release. I'll go back to the base game to trade and earn some creds but wow is Horizons so much fun.

While I get it can be rough, games contain bugs as part of beta's a lot of people forget that this is why beta's exist to begin with because a lot of games, early access and whatnot, have claimed to be 'beta' but are more or less feature complete and bug fixed but basically keeps it early access to say "We are working on it".

Personally I am guessing they are doing this because, as Elite has been hit with from some people, people aren't used to the base game + ongoing development, creation model being used any more. And a lot get upset because they feel they aren't getting a 'complete' product.

But yeah, beta's aren't for everyone, I just joined the beta ranks and am looking forward to helping with fixing Elite to help make it an even better game.
But that said, thanks for beta testing and help finding bugs when you did do it OP :)

Nothing to be ashamed of OP. Beta access allows you to choose to test and report or just mess around with stuff without reporting. You have paid for that privilege.

Of course, its good if people do report stuff, it really helps the devs and QA, but its not mandatory.

I've downloaded all the new content awaiting my new CH controllers, hopefully tomorrow but I have to admit the feedback I've been reading on the forum is leaving me less than jazzed about testing it. Needless to say I will be having a bit of a play though.. :D

The only part responsible for the quality and stability of their product are FD.
You have nothing to be ashamed of.
Remember, you paid for beta access.
You want to report bugs, good.
You don't want to report bugs, good too.
You have no obligations whatsoever, no morale ones and no contractual ones either.
Stop worrying.:)

A major problem is that thousands that want to test, break and report all over N.America, UK, Europe, Australia and N.Zealand..... just can't Aunty :(

11- 12 hours after release

I didnt buy the horizons beta because i havent done any significant testing recently. Just going to carry on with the game as normal and currently on an exploration trip. Keeping an eye on here to see what is happening and hopefully will hit the ground running when the finished product is released. So dont feel bad...

I'm the same. Didn't buy the beta as the bugs just tears me apart.
I never play beta games either. Finished products is all what I enjoy.

OP, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Patience. Servers are being hammered, as usual after a beta launch. FD could do with adding more horsepower to cope with the demand, but its a peak, and should settle off within a day or two.

Software testing is a chore so not for everyone I guess.
Bottom line though is too weed out those bugs and get the feedback flowing, pity we have to pay for the privelage though!

No need to be ashamed! I have beta-tested in the past (flight sims mostly) and have decided not to do it anymore (certainly not pay for it! although I did for ED). Seeing the game being developed can be fun, but all the bugs / half finished features can really ruin the experience, even after the game has been released! So now I patiently wait for a finished (better: stable) version of a game before joining so I can be oblivious to all kinds of back-end/technical problems and let my imagination run free!
