A look at Elite as a whole game.

Over time on these forums I have seen a lot of talk about elites lack of deeper content, and while I would be among the first to scream yes if frontier said they were completely overhauling the mission system and background sim,

I think the people who criticize and talk like it would be so easy to fix all of Elite's problems and the only reason Frontier isn't doing it is because they have no plan or something should take a step back first and look at what

Frontier has achieved first. Since one of the major gripes people have is Elite is an unfun grindfest I will address this first, I just got done playing Elite for 30 ish hours in the past week and I have made over 250 mil having fun

doing the one of the most profitable things in the game, bhing with ALD rank 5 bonus. I say that all this was fun because of two things that are important to every aspect of Elite that Frontier had to get right before they could

worry about anything else, the hud which you see all the time and the flight model which you both constantly use. These two essential mechanics are the best I have seen in any space game, and for the hud maybe any game, it is

intuitive gives lots of info, not too intrusive and rewards those who know how to use it effectively, this goes for the flight model too, it is near perfection, and very fun and rewarding once you get skilled with it. So yes I was

doing the same old "grind" for 30 hours this week, but everytime I blew up a pirate, I felt rewarded and had fun doing it, and the beautiful rings in this game make it all the more rewarding. This game is stunning, and landing on

planets looks like it will be even more breathtaking. Also while some people have some really cool ideas about how to improve depth, I don't think they realize the difficulty to implement. I want improved gameplay and fixed

bugs and such just as much as the next CMDR, but sometimes when people talk like FD doesn't know how to make a good game, they overlook way too much, like the hud, flight, combat, pvp, the entire explorable galaxy, and

much more that Elitehas accomplished. Keep up the great work FD, I know you will keep making this awesome game better.

Fly Safe CMDR's :)

Rant post (boo)
Fan post (yay)

The visuals are cool. Eventually you feel like you're sitting in your chair at home watching a bunch of spots moving around on your screen because nothing is really happening. Oh look, a strong source signal. I wonder what that could possibly be! Gold? Wow never saw that before.

Hey look, the NPCs have all said the exact same thing to me in the combat zone. Odd. Now my text screen looks like someone got caught cheating and had to write sentences on the chalk board 500 times (showing my age here).

The sounds are cool.

Look I'm flying though hyperspace and there are weird clouds. I vaguely recall this part of space from EVERY JUMP I EVER MADE. Oh noes, I stopped near a star that would actually roast me like a coffee bean at his distance. Oh well just turn around and go to that planet with the big circle around it and there will always be a big yellow ring where I can enter anther sequence and finally be around some big chocolate nugget looking rocks and wait for a ship to come in and shoot at me.

Hey I found Palladium for 12500 a ton. I can sell it over there for almost 1600 more. I should do that. Wow this is boring. I spent two hours hauling imaginary stuff between two stations and nothing happened except I bumped into a wall. I think I'll go explore. Wow look how pretty those planets are. Jump again... forever... another day goes by.... jump.... jump....jump..

Great visuals.

I was expecting this thread to be another miserable complaining rant about how bad Elite is and how it needs to become Star Citizen and every other game ever (via hundreds of minigames). It's nice to see you get how much Elite brings. I sat and watched a youtube video with a player showing how to mine asteroids. No simple arcade mechanic here... there's actually an art to it with realistic physics and how you cut into the asteroid as opposed to it's rotation speed/angle determines how easy or difficult it will be to gather the mined fragments. This kind of subtlety of complexity goes over the heads of casual gamers who only want cinematic cut-scenes, stories and minecraft style crafting. Anyone who is bored in Elite is someone who isn't able to look beneath the surface. Someone else on this forum said it very well: A shallow mind can't see depth.

I give you rep for not having a shallow mind and having something positive to say.
