Elite / Frontier Introducing my son, but I'm computer iliterate

My son recently asked me which games I played as a kid, naturally I started talking about Frontier Elite. We searched on line and found a download, but being a knucklehead, operating a non-colour phone and with all the techno savvy of a slightly smoked kipper I am at a loss to make the game work. For those in the know I can tell you that i am operating under windows XP. how might I go about sharing the frontier world with my son on this system. Detailed advice would be important as i can barely type my name, yet alone use a computer.

look for glffe on google that version will work in windows xp and is awesome. Hi res graphics! I think there are some kind of installation instructions with it. its not that bad to get working..

okay, I just googled 8) click here

Thank you, should I download the "Hard-core (non-aniso) executable" or the "Executable with Aniso's mods"? I really appreciate the help.

The hard-core version is true to the original FFE in the capabilities of the ships, weapons and so forth. The Aniso mod makes a lot of interesting changes which alter the balance of the game (some say for the better, some say for worse) so try both and see which you prefer.

Hi guys, is there any way of making this load up full screen? In windowed mode when the mouse goes outside the screen the ship stops tracking making fighting that much harder.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Open up your glffe.cfg file and change the line at the top to read startfullscreen=1

I successfully have an install of the JJffe and can make this work in the small window. I've downloaded both of the glffe offerings into the game folder, but when I try to run either one I am told that "this application has failed to start because glew32.dll was not found"
Should I just be running the jjffe28a7 or should I be doing something else??
This also presents problems for full screen as ctrl F12 wont enlarge and I can't find the glffe.cfg file to edit it.

It sounds like you haven't downloaded all the required files. On the glffe page, download the zip files cfg.zip libs.zip and bmps.zip and extract them to your Firstenc directory.

You'll find it when you've extracted cfg.zip :)

One more question, game saving?

Hit escape twice, or the pause icon twice, to bring up the options menu.
But...
The file system in glffe is a bit buggy, although it's fine in jjffe.
Basically, glffe will let you load games, no problem.
It will also let you save games, but it won't let you change the commander name.
The delete option doesn't work at all, and will crash the game.
The best work around if you want to change your commander's name before saving is to do it in jjffe and then load it back into glffe. You will only need to do this once, of course, unless you want to change your commander's name again.
With deleting commanders, again I use jjffe for that, although you can always just delete the file from the Firstenc/Commandr directory ;)
Hope some of that made sense. Have fun!

winuae

I have it running in my winUAE Amiga-emulator. Works great :) I can show all the games that I played as a kid. I can even show Amiga-workbench :)

I still have my Amiga1200 too, but its in a box in a cellar somewhere and I'm not sure it still works.
