A World First for E:D...

A World First occurred today:

Wednesday 2nd December 00:00 (GMT) is the first time, ever, since Steam launch that Elite:Dangerous 'concurrent players online' (on Steam) figure exceeded _both_ GTAV and DSII:SOTFS

All three games were released to Steam within two weeks of each other in April 2015, and for similar initial purchase prices.

Admittedly, this was almost entirely due to a server out(r)age that affected GTAV... but not E:D

...however, it's interesting to note that E:D and GTAV 'concurrent players online' figures creep ever-closer.
GTAV originally boasted up to 40 times as many concurrent players online as E:D or DSII
Today, that figure has dropped to a maximum of around 4 to 6 times as many concurrent players online.

Also:
All-time peaks for GTAV (360,761) and DSII (12,051) occurred just after release - way back in April 2015 - and have fallen ever since.
All-time peak for E:D (18,039) occurred 3 days ago.
Not forgetting, of course, Steam figures don't represent all of the PC owners of E:D out there...

In the race to prove true 'Evergreen' characteristics, DSII was out of the running a while back.

Questions:

1. How much longer before E:D 'concurrent players online' on Steam are regularly higher than GTAV?

2. Will Frontier release a brand new ship to all players to celebrate the date upon which 'concurrent players online' exceeds 25,681 - the number* of original Kickstarter Backers?

*A.K.A. 'The Magic Number'

Go on Frontier!

What better way to celebrate the undeniable Kickstarter success of E:D?

DBOBE: "I get lots of emails saying 'can you do Elite' but you say well, if it's only a few hundred people..."

Looking very likely there's at least one million people, just one year in...

Right On CMDRs!

Ad Astra!

Nice stats, +1 for the info...

I'd say:
1) The point roughly 75%-85% of the time between GTA V and GTA VI where the audience is dropping off and the next one is announced so people are waiting not playing :D
2) Probably not since it'd take a few weeks of Dev work to create a new ship, they may announce a new skin or something for the occasion like the gold ones they were going to giveaway if they won that award...

But yes quite a success when balanced against expectations. Long may it continue :)

Yes Sir + Rep from me too.

Having played GTA V since release on PS3 and now PC, and having completed the story at least 6 times, I'm done with it...oh and the hackers and modders on there is now officially rediculous!

ED is where it's at for me now, not tried Horizons beta, and I'm tying to avoid as many spoilers I can about it.

I cannot wait until Horizons is released (probably the most exited I've ever been for a release) and Looking forward to discovering it all for myself!

Good on you Frontier, and long may it continue.

That's the best thing about Elite, even going back to the original in the 80s (which is number two in my Best Games Of All Time list, with Elite Dangerous taking the number one spot). I always used to go back and play the original every two or three years, I've probably put in well over a thousand hours into the original game over the years.

Didn't want to play the second game because I didn't like the filled vectors and missed the third game too.

As soon as I heard Dave Braben was working on another game I can't even put into words how happy I was, and now it's been released it was even better than I thought it would be...

And now we can land on planets..? Outstanding!!!

Wait, doesn't this only show steam players? I.e. me playing without steam and just using the Frontier launcher probably doesn't even show up there!

Correct. These are Steam stats only, and if you launch using only the Frontier launcher you won't contribute to the concurrent players online stats.
We can only estimate the total concurrent E: D players online from the total units sold and scaling accordingly.
