A while ago I noticed a friend use a single button to contact a station and ask for landing permission. I thought that was cool and wanted to do it as well... only to find out I actually do not have any idea how to do it. Seems to need some kind of macro?

Yes. If your cursor is at the Navigational tab, the sequence to get to docking permission request is always the same, so just put that into whatever macro tool you have. I have the sequence bound to one of my T-16000M buttons. If I access the Nav panel and look at Contacts or other tab before I reach the station, I'll have to move my cursor back to the Nav tab. I'm not aware of any absolute keystrokes that I can use instead of relative ones.
Voice attack also works very well. I just say "request docking" and voice attack does the rest.
Try 1 - e - space - space.
That's 1 for opening left tab, e to move right to contacts, space to select the first contact entry, space again for docking permission.
Be careful, doesn't work twice for any given approach. When you requested outside of 7.5 km and it didn't work you're already in contacts tab, so that macro would move on to - IDK, subsystems?
Right, that's what I have bound right now, but it's relative. As you say, it doesn't work twice, because your cursor has moved off the Nav (left) tab. There's no guarantee that when you hit '1' you start off at the left tab, so to use this binding you have to make sure you leave your tabs at the left most tab after whatever action you might have taken. You can actually add additional binds to return to the left most tab to avoid the retry issue, but that doesn't solve the problem of if you manually moved off the left tab in the first place.

fortunately it is a tad predictable. I think when you go into or out of supercruise the focus'd position resets to the Nav tab. If you check anything on that screen (i.e. switch between tabs) and not place it BACK on the Nav tab .. you'll be hosed when you try to trigger the "request for docking permission".
I have a Logitech G19 and used its macro settings software. For the most part, works great. 1 - e - space - space - wait 20 seconds - gear down.
Then I have a "secure moorings". Thrusters up for 7 seconds, gear up, mains 50% ahead.
