Should the ships of Elite 1, 2 & 3 make a return in Elite Dangerous?

Don't worry. There are some biggies coming along eventually. The playable ones might not be to the same scale as the X games though I have to admit. I remember doing an EVA next to my Terran destroyer and approaching one of its guns. I think the guns were about as big as a Sidewinder. :D

Didn't realize the ships were so big in the X games !

I always thought they were quite huge in Elite.

They do seem positively tiny in Star Citizen to me, like the ships aren't really much bigger than modern day jets and mac trucks.

The ship I was referring to was 41, a Destroyer class. 42 and 43 are carriers and as you can see are even bigger. I could have parked a Panther on one of the engine mountings on the back of my M1.

I would imagine that the bulk carriers or other large ships are going to approach the size of some of these behemoths.

I'd like to see all the classics make it in - in an updated form, at least. I can say that I'd always wanted to fly at least some of those old ships, and I feel like I'm finally getting my chance.

I'd even like to see the Worm in here. I don't want to fly it, just laugh at it as it goes by. Still, it would give me something to laugh at.

Been watching all the lovely Alpha 3.x video footage (thanks very much guys and girls doing the Youtube uploads and twitch streams) and the one thing that strikes me is how tight a squeeze it appears to be in the docking aperture. Especially for the Cobra III's.

Regardless of the size comparison of Elite ships to ships in other games, a Panther Clipper was a massive size increase to a Cobra III. So, the question is is the size of the station docking aperture really as small as it appears to be and if it is will the much larger transport ships if/when they're introduced be able to get into the internal station docking bay or have to use external docking rings/pads?

Maybe one of the lucky Alpha streamers could risk a bit of loitering outside the station recording ships entering and exiting Port Zelada to give us a more accurate idea of how big the docking aperture really is?

Bump

Bump/resurrection:

I know this an old thread, but I couldn't help it. I've getting fancy to see what our other ship options will be. Any once else want one of each?!

I think I'd be the most excited to see what the inside of the Orca looks like! EVA anyone? :D

Assuming most (or all) of the classic ships make it into the game, I can see myself buying one of each just to keep in the hangar :)

Would definitely like to see all the classics return, but I wouldn't mind seeing a few new ones as well, so long as they fit in with the classic lineup.

Games featuring more than 10 ships (or cars, or planes, or guns, or simply something) suffer from OP-ness.

After some dogfight: "Hey I have 50 ships, but I got killed by 51st one! Nerf it!!"

After nerfing that ship: "Hey, 51st ship killed me again! It's broken now! Fix it!!"

Players already flying 51st ship: "***, my ship is useless now! Game sucks! Money return!"

People hate the unknown. But they can try just limited number of ships. Having rather reasonable number of ships that anyone can buy, try and keep flying - leads to balanced game. Let people sharpen their skills, rather than witch-hunting for "OP" ships. Let them make squads, escort each other and fly with no fear of OP ships abusers.

Let them build their names, instead of fleet of "OP" ships.

And those .01% of players who don't understand the concept of trial and error can fuss all they want, everyone else is having fun and you can't make everyone happy, especially that type of consumer. Variety makes gameplay in large sandboxy games. I'd personally like to see 50 ships on release and wouldn't care if half of them were broken, because they'd be fixed eventually and most importantly, they'd exist in the meantime. I'll settle for 25 and hope every expansion brings another 10 or so.

I can't prove you were right or wrong about .01% participation of ignorant players. I feel there's more. But we all know how important might they become on forums when speaking about broken ships. They can produce lot of steam. They are exactly that connection that leads from broken ships to broken game. And no one can't make them shut up, no matter how few or how many are they. And no one can publish a game with broken ships and fix them later to make everybody happy.

But one can make less ships that are not broken and are available to all, no matter of side they play on.

You sure were right about variety. But it should come from player's personal styles, their role play, combat skills and ship upgrades ofc. Upgrades should make ship more capable to do one thing and less to do another and devs are doing fine balancing job about it so far.

There is no job you can't do in ED with one of just 6 ships: light fighter, heavy fighter, support corvette, light commercial, heavy commercial and a barge. It's personal upgrade choice and pilot flying it what makes ship successful or fail.

I name all my PC's after snakes, my current PC is called Mamba, I've had Gecko (technically a lizard) Boa, Anaconda, Viper etc... So I wold love to see a Mamba and Gecko in the game.
