Graphics Settings for GTX 970

I had an AMD motherboard with a GTX750, which played the game perfectly apart from at some RESs, I got glitching, where several frames would drop and my targeted ship would sudenly be in a different place after a short pause.

I wanted to improve that, so I got a i7 with GTX970. I was running at maximum 2560 x 1600, which only gave 27 fps, though the game seemed to play smoothly apart from occasional jumping, where I suddenly seemed to jump about a second into the future. This is different to the glitching I had before, which had a pause, so time was constant. Can someone tell me the ideal settings for this equipment so that I get the best experience?

I have the same as you d8veh, although I run at 1920x1080. I use the default settings & get (at least) 60fps everywhere, and it only drops as low as yours when using upscaling.

Jumping one second into the future suggests you may be low on system RAM. Can you open the Resource monitor (there's a button on the Performance tab of Task Manager), go to the Memory tab & look at the Hard Faults/sec chart.

Hard Faults are not a bad thing, they are simply times when the PC is accessing the swapfile, which is normal behaviour when switching tasks or opening an app that was recently closed. However once the game is open & swapping has settled down if you see a lot of activity it suggests your PC needs more RAM.

Hope this is of some use :)

I've got 16g of memory. That should be enough shouldn't it?

I tried looking at the memory in task manager. I clicked on the memory tab, but I couldn't find hard faults/sec chart.

What settings does Gforce Experience suggest? It has an optimise setting for your card.
How does that work, please? I can't find anything like that in the nVidia control panel

Open GeForce experience or download it if it isn't installed..
there is an option to "optimise" games installed on your system..

27fps? Dang man, I'm getting higher than that at 2160p (4k UHD) on my GTX 780 (non-TI). What I did was turn off blur and AA. Worked well, brought me from about 15fps to between 35-40 in most environments. Planets (when landing/landed) net me closer to 25 though.

In Beta 3 the stutter is back in RES. It was fixed in 1.5 but still present in 1.4 so just have to wait.
I use Experience recommended which also selects DSR and is the reason it is 25fps at planets for BETA 3 but has been better in the other versions. Due to bugs and memory leaks the game is simply not yet optimized.
You must run PrecisionX16 and select both K-Boost (if factory Superclocked)and create a custom Fan setting to keep temps between 60 to 70 degrees else all games will crash.

Dunno what is left of it, but Nvidia screwed it with the 970. They sold it as a 4 gig card, while the last 500 mb was actually slow memory for less important processing. Shortcomings in the driver cause this memory to be accessed by main processes causing stutters and what not. Later on, they adapted the drivers and made - in essence - a 3.5 vid card out of it. Long story short, on high resolutions stutters may occur with older drivers. But from what I've read, this should only occur when using 4k solutions.

I've got this card as well, and I only learned about the problems it had in the past. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but if you google it, you'll find a lot of info.

5760x1080 at ultra wasn't a problem for my card - 45fps in stations, 70-120fps in space, about 80 in a RES.

Horizons, however, is an entirely different matter!

*edit* and what i7?

1920x1080 everything ultra, no supersampling. AA set to SMAA in game but also enable FXAA via nvidia control panel, gives similar results to using DSR/Supersampling, at better quality than in game FXAA, smooths orbital lines and hud elements. (Overriding aa settings with control panel probably disables in game smaa but I've left it on anyway, no performance penalty.)

Also terrain work slider is about 75-80% to the right.

This results in locked 60 with only occasional drops to 50-55 in glide mode.

I'm running an Evga 970 FTW at 4k on Ultra, I'm getting 60fps in space, 40-60fps in a RES depending on how much stuff I can see, and 40fps in stations.

Almost the same as Jon flint.

I have a 970 (NVIDIA) running in Ultra everywhere (latest stable non-Beta drivers). I tried it with the NVIDIA "Optimization," but ended up putting it back to native 1080 res as I had resolution issues with YT recordings. I get a solid 60FPS almost everywhere even when live streaming.

Terrain slider is all the way over to the right. Plays Horizons Beta without issue and I never hear the fans kicking up so the vid card isn't being stressed in the slightest at those settings.

PC System Specs:
- AMD FX-8350 8-Core Black Edition CPU @4.2GHz
- ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ Motherboard
- Zalman CPU Cooler CNPS14X
- 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
- MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB video card
- OCZ RevoDrive 240 GB PCIe SSD + RAID 1 4TB drives.

16Gb of system RAM should be plenty (unless you have a ton of other stuff open), I only have 6Gb & it runs okay. Maybe check your C: drive isn't full.

The GeForce Experience app initially seems like some bloatware thing you don't need, so you may not have installed it, but you can switch off most stuff that you don't want and it is useful for automatically optimising your settings, which is probably what you need right now.

Google nVidia Drivers & download the latest set from the official nVidia website (currently 359.06 I think), install everything. Personally I leave out the 3D options but they do not harm other than taking up a bit of space. You shouldn't need to restart your computer.

Once it's installed open up the GeForce Experience app (it takes a minute or two to load & searches your PC for compatible games, E:D is one of those) and go to the games tab, highlight Elite: Dangerous. You will see a table showing current settings and optimal settings. Have a look through the list & see what's different.
You can then either manually change anything you think might be the cause of the slow-down, or simply click optimise. Open up the game normally & see if you are happy with the result.

A humblebrag.

My GTX 970 works fine too. It's hardwired as one in a series of 8 GPUs controlling a Japanese Abe Lincoln robot's head. Lincoln's left eye sags during his double entendre though.

(In all seriousness, I'm running a modest system at 3.5gig with a 770, the predecessor to the 970, It's an intel system, gigabyte mobo, and sandybridge chipset with 8 gigs of ram, and 2 gb of onboard vram. I output to a 50 inch HDTV and keep the resolution at 1600x1050, get above 35fps at all times. Your problem is your super high resolution good sir.) And my humblebrag? The chip clocks to 4.4 with the massive inline watercooler! I just never feel the need.

I'm running my 970 @ 4K in Ultra. Out in space it's pretty solid around 60fps (monitor v-sync limited so don't know if it would go much higher). In stations and on planet surfaces it drops to about 30-35, which for me is fine.

Glad to hear you're still getting playable fps at 4k Ultra in Horizons, I've been using those settings in space for a few weeks and honestly don't think I could go back to a lower resolution, so was worried I'd have to turn things down for Horizons!

Same experience as Phyl and cptdavep. I've got an Evga GTX 970, and I'm running pretty much maxed out on a dual 1920x1080 monitor (Elite on one monitor only) with 90fps+ on a 2012 Mac Pro, which means my bottleneck is likely the PCI Express 2.0 slot, not the card. I'd expect to see a little better performance on a modern computer with a PCI Express 3 slot, but I'm still happy as a clam with this card.
