Naming guidelines

I noticed on the £40 tier that you can have your name entered into the NPC database, so that you can have an NPC pilot named after you appearing randomly in the universe. I also noticed that it had a footnote, stating that names "Must not be offensive, trademarked or problematic for us to include in the game, and must follow our naming guidelines."

There's no mention of the naming guidelines anywhere else on the kickstarter, however, so I was wondering if someone in the know could detail what those guidelines are?

Really, I'm just hoping that "Chaz GELF" will be an acceptable name to include in the NPC database :D

It will probably be the same across the board. And I think you'll be safe with Chaz GELF :D

Yep you would be ok with that Chaz GELF, however if your name was something like Mr Coco-cola or...um...Mr Chris Roberts, that might cause a wee problem :D

Oh wait a minute Chris Roberts IS in the game, that's ok then :D

Yeah. I think my main concern was that they'd have some kind of stringent naming guidelines in order to ensure that an NPC would fit in to the Elite storyline, and since I doubt genetically engineered life forms are officially in Elite canon, that's where my concern came in.

But if it's just stuff like "You can't name an NPC xXHeart0fD4rkn3s5Xx, that's just silly" then I should be alright. XD

Thanks! Hopefully you will one day encounter a lone GELF haplessly fleeing from pirate ships. If you do, give those pirates what-for for me, would you?. :D

Ermmm. I may be one of those Pirates :D

I think you'll be fine as long as you don't want to call your NPC Luke Skywalker, or worse still, __xxSkyW4lk3rxx__

That would just annoy everyone anyway.

Actually, I rather hope that our commander names will be forced into being proper words, no punctuation or numbers or other silliness ....

I'm not sure what I'm going to do as "Alien" would not only seem silly, but I'll be using that as my Commander name.
and before anyone mentions the film "Alien" and copyright, "alien" is a common word and can't be held to copyright.

I'll probably let FD use my real name, but it'll be weird if I come across "Me"

Yeah, I think I should be alright. I don't think "GELF" is a copyrighted word, it's been used in a couple of science-fiction shows, and it's just an acronym for Genetically Engineered Life Form. I use it in my webcomic, but again the term isn't specifically copyrighted, it's just a convenient term to use when referring to genetically engineered beings of any size and shape. :D

I can't imagine FD getting irate about it. They might get on you if they are looking for more immersion. So maybe not Chaz GELF, but Chaz Gelf or something like that. All caps would look downright silly in game in my opinion. Imagine if you had seen a Chaz GELF in FE2, wouldn't you be a bit confused as to why his last name is all capped?

Just my 2 credits.

What about double barrel names? If the surname was something like Thompson-Smith? I don't want to use my real name either, its really boring and common.

Hopefully the Gelf wouldn't mind Chaz Gelf rather than Chaz GELF as the caps do jump out slightly too much.

Well, as I said, GELF is an acronym for Genetically Engineered Life Form. But now that you mention it, I do see an issue with including the GELF in the name from an in-character standpoint, namely that he probably wouldn't actually say it when introducing himself. That's kind of like someone going "Hey, I'm Bob Thargoid, nice to meet you!".

So I guess I'd probably go with just plain "Chaz" as an NPC pilot floating around. If there were some way to make a more obvious reference to the fact that he's a genetically engineered lifeform rather than a human or other alien, that'd be cool, but NPC names are NPC names. :D

stuff like "You can't name an NPC xXHeart0fD4rkn3s5Xx,

This i think is the sort of names that should not be allowed or others that trade on cheap laughs at the expense of others race, sexuality etc.

Once a role playing server establishes itself in multiplayer just imagine the criteria they may insist on before you can join if you wish to do so!
