News Elite Dangerous: Horizons on Steam

Really? I finally managed to get my Horizons Key for Steam.
So, the original ED1.0 was around 6Gb and now the update from ED1.4 to ED1.5 is 8.1 Gb on Steam.
And then to installation of ED 2.0 Horizons is an additional 6Gb after that.

Isn't that a little much for a game?
I feel like I'm downloading the same content multiple times!

That's because you probably ARE downloading the same content multiple times.

There are 3 version of ED now.

Elite Dangerous (32-bit)
Elite Dangerous (64-bit)
Elite Dangerous: Horizons (64-bit)

I'm guessing Steam is simply downloading all of them.

Yep, got my key now too, and I'm seeing the same thing. I paused the original 8.1GB download and moved the new 6GB Horizons download to the top of the page. I'm guessing that's the only one I need to actually play 64-bit Elite Horizons 2.0.

I hope so, cause otherwise I won't be playing for four more hours, lol!

You just have to remove the first Elite Dangerous, since it's a separate game Steamwise.

I started downloading horizons on the new launcher (non steam) and got about halfway. Then I checked and the steam keys were working so I got mine and started downloading it after pausing the other download. Can I delete the stuff in the "Frontier" folder in "Program Files (x86)", as it should now be downloading in the "Steam" folder? There are no local files for Horizons yet, so I will wait until steam is finished dowloading it anyway.

Yeah can confirm. The key that they gave to me is already used! I hope that they will address the error and gave me another valid code!

I am really disappointed!

4 hours? Try 4 days... :-( Currently based in Philippines in the middle of a typhoon.
Fiber doesn't exist here, I don't even have cable or proper DSL coming into my house.
All lines are above ground and prone to falling trees and :):):):).

I'm only interested in ED Horizons for now. Does that mean I can skip/postpone the 8.1Gb download for ED1.5?

Yes, in fact from what I've read so far we can outright delete the 8.1GB version and just stick with the smaller 6GB Horizons installation. I haven't tried it myself yet though, so consider it hearsay for now.

If you're a premium beta backer and can't find the button to redeem the key, then Frontier support said there is an issue with showing the redeem key button for us players. Will be resolved by tomorrow! :D

I redeemed a key, and when I went to activate it on steam it said it had already been redeemed by a different steam account. ><

I'd like to see an official announcement on this.
So many P Beta backers both here and on Steam forums with no idea what to do :/

So we get a key? Do we not get a key? Is it a problem with the launcher version on Steam that so many others are reporting as well????

I'm fine with launch day issues and waiting but a bit of communication goes a long way.

Its working :) had a hiccup with redeeming the product key but sorted that out by doing the following...

NOTE: I owed Elite Dangerous and purchased Horizons from steam...

  1. Logged into the Elite Dangerous store and went to my account dashboard.
  2. on the left I clicked on ‘Product Access Key’ and enter the CD key from Steam
  3. Started the launcher and pressed Play...

Thanks much. I bought Horizons through Steam and had to do the same. I kept getting an 'invalid key' error when directed to the website to link my account through the launcher. Going directly to my account in the Frontier store and entering my key from Steam manually worked perfect.

On a side note, I really really hope the next expansion is released as DLC and not a stand alone game like Horizons was. I realize why FD went that route but it has just created an unnecessary complicated mess.

Edit: Like your forum/game handle . Long live the fighters!

Guys, I don't get the Horizons Steam thingy... Horizons was installed with the regular version of Elite Dangerous steam ! When running the good old fashion launcher from the steam directory, Horizons was here !

Knowing that, I guess we can just copy our freshly updated version to our Horizon directory.

But why does Frontier is making a completely separate game in Steam ? I certainly don't want to lose my precious game hours (and also waste a great amount of time redownloading the game) So, eh ?? Dafuk, may I say.

Someone explain this to me.
Is this an expansion for Elite Dangerous or a standalone?

This. The way FDEV added Horizons on steam so far only caused confusion and problems. Steam already has amazing dlc support:

Using it would be much easier for everyone. Frontier, please.

In Steam they're listed as two separate games. Horizon includes the base game and both Horizons players and players of stand alone Elite Dangerous play in the same in game universe. If you have just the base Elite Dangerous you just can't land on planets.

Up for work! Ticket dropped for duplicate cd key. Using launcher to see if it can work while I'm out. Really thought I'd be playing at least tonight (weds) at least the standard horizons launcher is going faster than a turtle now (7am)

What a mess

Edit : standard launcher down to 250kbps Lololololol
