News New Game Launcher

Where shall we find this option to directly "install Horizons"? This is our goal, yet it is... strangely difficult to find, or i've been living under a rock playing EliteDangerous :D

Update the launcher. The new launcher is blue, so you know you have the correct one.

If you are elligible for access to Horizons (Life time pass or have bought it, and your computer can run it) it will appear in the game options to select. click on it and "Install" will show instead of "play".

Click on the "Install" button.

And the removal of the previous 32 bit client install as per my comment just a few posts further back?

Does this colour change apply to those with only 1.5 also? If so this may explain why my reinstall has continually failed since yesterday, I definitely downloaded the new launcher, but it remains black and orange. What may have gone wrong here?

Aha, got it... Steam update was only 1.5 and launcher still orange... Launcher from Frontier website updated to blue and has Horizons for those that bought it.

I did a quick delivery run last night in Horizons, and it worked fine - now I just need to work out how to land on a planet :)

Everything in and working well via Steam, however....

I can't make head 'nor tail of the "Support Notice : 64-bit or 32-bit? We recommend you install the 32-bit install of Elite: Dangerous if you are seeing both." in the launcher. What does that mean, exactly?

I also noticed that Steam treats the Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Horizons as two distinct games and I have Elite Dangerous and an Elite Dangerous Horizons directories in my steamapps/common folder:
-Elite Dangerous/Products
--- COMBAT_TUTORIAL_DEMO
--- elite-dangerous-64
--- FORCE-FDEV-D-101
- Elite Dangerous Horizons/Products
--- elite-dangerous-64

Should I delete the 64-bit version (downloaded via the new FRONTIER launcher) in the original Elite Dangerous folder?

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum but I'm sure I'm not the only one with a system that is working but is a little confused on the implementation of the two launchers.

I'm on steam and only trying to get 1.5 version but have been unable to reinstall since the launcher update yesterday. Did you have no problems at all with this? I keep getting a message saying connection terminated by host. This has been going on for almost a full day now with me :(

Steam automatically updated my "Elite Dangerous" game like any other game - it appeared in the "downloading" section when I ran up the steam program and when it was complete, ran as normal...

Just had the "Horizons has landed" mailshot from Frontier.

What's the deal with the DirectX 11 versus regular Windows installers?

When I started the client yesterday it prompted me that I needed a new installer and then took me directly to a download (didn't offer me a choice of which one). Will it have automatically picked the right one for me? Should I double check? Would it make much difference?

Yes I got the steam update last night, some time around 6:30pm. It finished this morning just before 9am. The problem I have been having is that since the launcher update I was prompted for yesterday afternoon, I have been unable to reinstall the game. It gets so far then would give me an error message that said it was unable to read data from the transport connections and that a connection had been forcibly closed by the host. I tried several times and twice again this morning after the automatic steam update had finished. It has given me that error message once so far today. For now it has downloaded almost maybe 3/4 of the way without the error message. I am hopeful that it will complete. My launcher remains black and orange, should this worry me or is the new colour scheme for horizons owners only?

Just had the mailshot, downloaded the new launcher, but it locks up every time without any kind of display or messages.
I have to Force Quit every time.

Running on El Capitan.

Particularly if the download is interrupted it then starts again from scratch. Now faced with the same again to install the 64 bit version. NOT EVERYONE HAS FIBEROPTIC BROAD BAND PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERSTION.

It does. If a download fails then when it's restarted it picks up from where it left off, after first determining where it failed.

For those who power their machines with steam, try using this new fangled Electricity, works a treat and is far more reliable :).

64-bit at home and 32-bit at work

Yesterday (15th) I downloaded Horizons on both my homePC and my laptop at work. I played on my laptop at work too. When I logged on at work (32-bit laptop) I was opted download Horizons and I did
Today I can't access Horizon at work, because Horionz is only released for 64-bit.
I am opted to "upgrade" at work to Dangerous 32-bit (I assume its a downgrade from Horizons yesterday)

WHAT IF.... I play the game at work, I play Elite Dangerous. When I then play at home, Im playing Horizons.

How is this going to mix?

For the time being Im not touching Elite at work... until I know it wont scrwe with my Horizon at home

Thank you for your time

You should not have any problems...but if you leave your ship on a land based station at home...let us know what happens in the 32 bit version!

Whatever you change at work will change at home though. Buy a new ship, make a few million, or run a bunch of missions...everything will be the same.

I'm sure I remember one of the beta patch notes including a comment around this. I don't think they actually mentioned what the 'fix' was though.

Same situation. Played Horizons at home this morning. Left myself docked at Jameson Memorial. Then played ED 32 bit briefly at work (bought a Cobra Mk IV and stored the Python). Kind of did it without thinking but I am now wondering what will have happened to the Planetary Vehicle Hangars I had fitted in the Python since, when I stored the ship using my work laptop, they weren't shown (something I spotted when I went to buy an SRV for the Cobra ... guess I'll have to do that when I get home again).

I'll let you know how this all turns out tomorrow.

Why oh why do we have to go through the authentication code / email process every time there's a new client installer to download?

I wouldn't mind so much if the auth email didn't take up to an hour to arrive depending on how busy Frontier's servers are.

And with a client installer needing to be downloaded by everyone in order to play the game - then that's going to create busy servers...

I don't have much time to play Elite - so when I finally find a window to do so, firing it up to be greeted by the new installer message puts me right off and I close it down again in the knowledge that I most likely won't be playing in the next hour anyway.

This is for the non-Steam version by the way. If anyone can confirm that this actually isn't a problem on Steam, then I'll redeem my Steam code and move to that platform.

Which amounts to Frontier just throwing money away when it comes to future DLC purchases (if Steam doesn't suffer this problem)...

I have the Steam version and it has been a similar process for me today. Fortunately my email with the code arrived pretty quickly but there were hassles with the Steam client refusing to shut down because it thought ED was still running (when it wasn't). Overall it has taken about 35 mins between one minor hassle and another.

Perhaps someone has the same issue, I read a few pages but was unable to find it or missed it: Get prompted for new version, proceed to download new version, new version installs, proceed to click on Elite dangerous:Horizons in Steam, prompted for new version, proceed to download new version, new version installs, proceed to click on Elite dangerous:Horizons in Steam, get prompted for new version,.............................ETC RINSE AND REPEAT, it does NOT give me an error message at any of the subsequent steps. It just doesn't recognize its own install? or doesn't even seem to install anything, the date on the launcher doesn't change.

I think this occurred on my last update but I don't remember what I had done to change it, or if it was corrected over time.
Thanks.

UPDATE : Disregard, found help in support thread. Cheers,

Well I cant log in after downloading and installing the new launcher.
I get to the part were it asks to verify my account by entering in the code they send to you're email address but the code never arrives.
and no I don't use stream I have been playing since Beta.
its not in my junkmail either so after opening a support ticket I get told that it may take 72 hours for a reply.
what sort of service is that and what do I do in the mean time.
