Speculation or fact?

When I saw the last dev video about the station docking, specifically when your ship was pulled in below, my mind immediately went to the scenario of you in Oculus Rift lifting from your pilot chair, strolling through your ship and going to the interior of the station, perhaps even encountering pirate ambush which results in a nice juicy tactical FPS combat.

Is something like this even on the horizon?
Also, I would die happy if I played a game where you go from tactical FPS combat to piloting a space ship in a non-linear manner and without any loading screens.

The ability to get out of your chair and walk around your ship and the ability to walk around sections of station is definitely in there.

Phase 1 - space
Phase 2 - planets (vague details say 1 year after initial launch)
Phase 3 - Ability to walk around

I don't think there are plans for FPS combat mechanics though.

Star Citizen is very much going down that path and their game engine is actually more suited to that then the space flight part, so we'll see how they do.

Depending on the sales success or...?

Well, it's a business so that is always a factor. However, I do expect FD to deliver at least some form of seamless planetary landings and first person gameplay no matter the sales. This is a game FD has wanted to do for a long time and they are going "all in" IMO.

Based on what I've seen so far I'm no that worried about sales though. ;)

I think these pieces of concept art begs to differ on that point. ;)

From stuff I've seen in interviews i think you disembark from your ship before it goes below into the hangar, down there is where all the machinery gets to work servicing, repairing and re-equipping your ship and humans are to squishy to get in the way of big robot arms and stuff!

The main docking area in Zelada (which is the only station we've been indies yet) is a pressurised hollow area, which is surrounded by the large open areas of parkland with the habitation areas further out, in effect they are upside down skyscrapers on the outer edge of the station.

I think eventually you'll leave the ship wander over to a lift which will descend down into the outer part of the station where you can complete whatever business you have there, or just chill on a bench in the park with a hotdog.

I prefer that Frontier works the planetary landings, the overflying of planets, and the military missions on the planets. FPS combat is my last wish

As long as you are not forced to wander about to complete trade and mission activities. X:R made that mistake and it was resented for being onerous and breaking immersion. We already live in a world where I can buy and sell shares, physical items, transmit large amounts of money to other countries and hold intercontinental meetings from an iPad, so it would be bizarre to find in future we were forced into face to face contact to complete everyday tasks.

I'm not sure I understand you correctly since I dont have a rift and have only seen videos of it. But if you mean moving around the room or wherever you are currently playing the game then I can see a couple of issues with using the rift with the game.

The first problem would be how far you could move. Doesn't the rift have to be attached to a box for control with a cable? Now even assuming that there is a really long cable in the box with the rift moving freely when using it would only work if the rift was wireless. The second problem concerns users with disabilities and I know there are quite a few on the forum already because I've read their posts. What if the user had limited movement for one reason or another this would make using the rift really difficult and probably impractical.

Well Squicker; docking at a space station, locating the bench at a park to pick up a passenger to take somewhere else;...good mission.:)

Elite is a Space Sim, not a FPS. I hope they never implement this, and therefore won't ruin the game.

Yes, it's fact that we speculate.
At this point there is a lot of speculation but I wouldn't count on seeing the scope and breadth of what your OP questions anytime this year, if at all.
Although capital ship docking and planet fall landings are within discussed intentions by FD, the depth I think is too soon to discuss. There are far more pressing 'pokers in the fire' (the game itself) to be putting the 'cart before the horse' and discussing long term (read: future expansions) goals?

How else do you lure BF/COD kids to the verse? Personally, i'd love to sign up, along with a buddy, if possible, for a mission to free federal rubidium refinery from imperial rebels for a healthy reward. :) I'd be happy to see game "ruined" in this way.

I don't mind getting out of my ship and walking around but no FPS, for gods sake no, no!!

Gaming is already swamped with FPS games, if Frontier implement an FPS part to the game, I'll hunt down David and hand my collectors edition of ED back to him personally.

FPS, JUST NO!

You don't.
Want to play FPS...go play Counter Strike.

It's like saying "I want a PGA golfing Game...but I want to include features like in Tekken"

I'll rather cheese off a great white shark with a very short stick that see FPS in Elite.

I think if we're going to get boarding actions in first person then we're going to want a bit of shooty shooty.

Or would it be better handled like x series boarding - where you send off your tiny marines and watch the progress bar....

We're told first person roaming is coming at some point, we're told boarding actions will be coming too, if we don't have shooting in that section then it's going to be the most boring act of piracy imaginable!
I'll just walk around someone else's ship with the intention of stealing it but we don't fire lasers in ships as we might break something, so to settle this quandary how about a nice game tic-tac-toe or maybe hurl insults like we're on monkey island!

I can't see first person working in many situations without some kind of combat mechanic; course I don't mind if we only get sticks to hit each other with but I think we'll need something!
