how does faction rep work?

my rep with the feds is at 100% and it says im Allied. I have no rank but the bar says 15%. Do i need to find a mission to lvl up my rep past allied? and how do i increase the other bar for rank? Whats the fastest way to do both? And i know its to get better ships so which one should i be gunny for? i just got the vulture btw, thx

You can't get higher than allied with a faction.

Navy ranks are different, and they are what are required to unlock some ships, though there are still loads of ships that don't require a navy rank. Have a look on the Wiki for details on what the various ranks offer and decide whether you feel it's worth heading for a particular rank.

The navy rank bar is currently broken, it shows 0% for us all, despite the rank still being tracked correctly, they are looking at the issue.

The rank bar you are talking about is for the navy ranks, there are two currently Federation and Imperial.

Being allied with a faction means they will offer you better paying bulletin board missions, as well as appearing a very fetching shade of green on your sensor panel!

yes, pick all the Fed missions you can take, or do bounty hunting in Fed space, fight for the Feds in conflict zones, or Turn in bounties in Federation space..

Eventually you will see ranking up missions on the Bulletin Board. if you complte them, you gain ranks..

Dont expect them to turn up fast though, its a helluva grind to get ranked up.. as it should be ...

what do i need to do to increase rank? is it only mission from places that are allied with the federation?

Navy Ranks - Every time you do a mission from the Bulletin Board that has a symbol for either the Federation or Empire, a small increase goes to your Auxillary Navy Rank. All this does is unlock purchase ships. Damn good ones, too.
Minor Factions - These are the guys that post the mission on the Bulletin Board, referred to as BB Missions. Allied means they'll give you better/more missions.
There's a lot to it, but that's the basics.

EDIT: Damn, space Ninja'd while re-plotting my course eight times...

does being in a fed powerplay faction help?

Don't believe powerplay makes any difference in this.

You just need to focus on BB missions for the Federation affiliated minor factions (they have a logo nowadays), preferably the ones that give high rep, such as charity/assassinations/kill pirates.

Charity missions are good for Rank but bad for Background Simulator...Wait, way ahead of myself. You're going to spend a lot of time researching the internet. Welcome to Elite though!

Is that right? Turning in bounties in Empire/Fed controlled space will increase my auxilary ranks? Because I'm a Serf with the Empire, lol... Turned in probably 15m in bounties last night to an Empire controlled system.

Thats a point of discussion . Nobody really knows. I think yes. Most ppl think No.

I see it like this, the better influence, the better missions, the better missions, the better ranking.. It worked for me in the past, but I don't know its its this, or pure luck..

No, the influence has to do with the BGS. I wouldn't worry about that quite yet. It allows you to help Minor Factions expand into other stations/systems and declare war. It gets real tricky.

EDIT: Dammit Dusty, you keep sneaking in when I'm not looking. Gonna have to watch you like a hawk...

I generally take mining and charity missions from the BB. One is good for influence, the other reputation, can't remember which way around. Trading any excess minerals on the commodities market while handing in bounties for any NPC pirate foolish enough to tangle with what is still a well armed, well defended Python, in theory I have all bases covered.

I'm still getting nowhere fast :D
