Community Event / Creation Getting the ball rolling again with Buckyball Run 9

If we want to keep the craziness together for the live event... we can all fly regulation ships... like Cobras or LR-Haulers (to keep them cheap, but up to this moment, most of the runners are filthy rich)... This way the pack will fall on any of the waypoint nearly at the same time (If server resist hundreds of Hutton Truckers... it'll resist us).

Sounds like a great idea! It is probably even more fun if you can see all those other racers due to having the same jump range and thus route. It cancels out some traditional aspects of the race like ship, route and loadout choice but there would still be the second leaderboard for these things. The live race would then be more of a plain fast-flying fleet event, but probably even more fun. :)

I'm in - just make sure we have an Orca class. I'm one of those who likes to race in style.

That said I'm in regardless. It's just roomier in an Orca.

Right now I'm planning on it being open to class and hope people will come in whatever they fly on a day-to-day basis for long haul flying. :) It's one thing to win a race in a purpose-built custom racer, but it's another to do it in your regular working CMDR ship. Since the live run has only one attempt, the fastest ship class might not prevail. A lot will depend on the individual pilot and luck. It'd be cool as hell if some rook came along and took it in an adder, or some humble trader comes along and takes the title in a T7... Bucky loves surprises.

In earlier Buckyballs we've usually had the stock race running all week just so we could take the machines out of the equation and make it a pure test of navigation and piloting mojo. Sideys are a wee bit restrictive for this jaunt, though, so we may have the Hauler challenge this time around.

I'd expect nothing less from you, CMDR Passionfruit! Good to see ya again. ;)

the buckyball race 9 requires a t9-regulation class ;-)

That would be interesting. Anybody want to front the purchase price of a T9 for everyone in the race? I bet Lakon has discounts for purchases in bulk. ;)

In other news, I've been hanging out in Maia the past couple days and am happy to report that Obsidian Orbital is open for business!

Gotta say, the station does look mighty cool hanging in that nebula...

It's surprisingly busy... Lots of tourists and long-range haulers coming to and fro. That being said, I'm considering making the Buckyball Live event take place in a private group. Ruining some poor schlub's multimillion cred mission or wiping out tons of exploration data wouldn't be cool. Private group, we'd restrict the damage to ourselves. We might keep the regular event in open, depending on how the traffic looks the next couple weeks.

Of greater concern are the problems a lot of CMDRs seem to be having with route plotting in game, myself included. That will definitely need to be taken care of before I send the bumper sticker off to press...

We're getting closer, though... The Shotgun Shine will be gracing the docks of Obsidian Orbital very soon now...

Eheh... some of us don't HAVE a long range ship, man. I'm either gonna have to enter Haulin' A* or I'm gonna have to strip down my Courier.

I sho' as H-E-double-hockey-sticks ain't running my regular ship (a Fer-de-Lance with 9.7 LY jump range)!

Although... I am thinking about refitting my Courier for long-range dangerous-cargo work (i.e. speed + good shields), if I can find enough of those missions to justify doing so. That might make an interesting entry if I can keep the jump range in the 25+ LY range.

EDIT: Nope, to get the level of shielding that would make me comfortable with running "don't die" missions without being armed, not going to get better than 23 LY out of it.

EDIT: Weeeeelllll... maybe. http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_courier/03A3A3A1D3D2D2C---070707072t0253010100.Iw18UA==.Aw18UA== gets me to 25.08 LY with no cargo, can haul 18T of cargo (and still make 19 LY fully loaded), and has 402 MJ shields. Might do the job. I suspect the speed would drop off precipitously with 18T of cargo, though!

Well one good thing about Obsidian is that they do hand out some of the high-cred missions. The most I've seen for one is 4.8 million, but I did get two separate ones the other night worth 6 mil combined. Been working on getting my local rep up so I can get more of those "unavailable" missions. ;) So anybody running the race can make a little bank on the return if the bulletin board gods are smiling...

I think if I was going to build a Courier for that, it'd have to be this build:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_courier/03D3A3A1D3A2D2C-------2t023r010100.Iw18UA==.Aw18UA==

Less shields, but 307 m/s with boost to 415 at 18T cargo, and with the A rank distributor it can boost fairly often. 25.71 LY jump full fuel/no cargo, 19.78 with 18T cargo. No combat loaded ship except maybe a Clipper is going to stay in range for more than a few seconds, especially if I submit (and therefore don't spin out), and I'd hope 304 MJ of shields can stand up to anyone's weapons for a few seconds... or any minor mishaps trying to get through the slot without being scanned.

Should be up to the "secure courier" job (this is, after all , what the Imperial Courier was designed for) and while it's certainly no dedicated racer, I think it'd hold its own against most non-explorers' everyday builds in a race.

Hummmm, the race will be with our everyday ship.... So the last 1/4Bcr were made in a LR Smuggler Asp (will need to get a festive paintjob for the occasion) unknowinly training for Black Riband.:D

this has been one of the most hyped races ever, it better be bloody good Ez ;)
get on with it already!

Who's been hyping this? I ain't hyping a thing, let alone committing to a date until FD fixes the route planner bug.

Yeah if you wait too long, you'll lose everyone who plans to head out with Distant Worlds. ;)

Yeah there's competition all around, but see above. I'm still hoping for a Jan 2 start. It should be patched by then.... Right? RIGHT?

Time to open the big can of worms. FSD Boost: Allowed or no?

Eh, the worm can was already opened. No FSD boost since not everyone has Horizons, or they open up the synths to the general public. It'll go on the main race page whenever that goes up.

Have we settled on a date yet for the live run? I have an expedition planned that I want to set off on, as I actually have some time off over the Christmas period for the first time in about 15 years, but I cannot leave until after the live race as I certainly don't want to miss this :)

Good deal. I guess that's going to be an honor system thing since it'd be pretty hard to prove someone used it outside of them posting an otherwise impossible time, but what would be the point of cheating? Bucky would be disappointed and if Bucky ain't happy...

Arggg the pressure! ;) It's almost enough to make me set a date in stone. I do hate making people wait and wonder, but really, seriously, I gotta see that the state of the galaxy (game) is in a place where the race can be effectively run. The Elite Racers are in a deeper bind... apparently they've got an SRV race kicking off on Monday and there's a nasty SRV throttle bug which could make life hard for them. We've got a slightly longer window, but I know people need to plan, and I greatly appreciate that CMDRs are willing to set their course to plot around little ol' me.

On the other hand, I've been doing this long enough to know in-game bugs can turn events like this into massive, time wasting exercises in frustration. Buckyball 3 was a great race, marred at the end by network problems that prevented some very tight competition from reaching its logical conclusion. And Buckyball 4, which looking back was CMDR Ozric's first Buckyball (wow! time flies) was an unmitigated disaster with network issues, lag, BGS problems, changing rules in the universe etc., all conspiring to make BBR4 the race with the lowest completion race out of all of them.

10 competitors, and only 5 managed to finish. The thread itself was only 6 pages long. It was frustrating for the racers, and for me as the organizer because I couldn't do anything to help it. I'd really rather not have a repeat.

I'm really hoping to see a X.1 patch today... Because with the holidays upon is, the chance of a patch happening get slimmer and slimmer with each passing day.

Yeah but it was great fun, because not only was I introduced to your crazy world, but I managed to drag a Type 6 (with all the limitations of modules choice and inexperience we had) into second place :D

I imagine (hope) they will release 1 patch before the Christmas break.

Well if BBR9 is gonna be a "live" race, then this will be the first BBR that I gotta sit out :(

(cuz I live on the other side of the planet and in general I'm 12 hours ahead of East Coast USA, 8 hours ahead of London GMT)
