Do you want to experiment a little bit with VR? Want much more frames??? (Extended Mode only!)

Hello Commanders!

I experimented a little bit with EDH VR last night. I wanted to play it in VR, without wasting Power for 3D! I went some steps backwards to achieve this goal in short time, for free.
With the following instructions you'll be able to test this "mode" for free and easily! There are many "downsights", not "only" the missing 3D! The headtracking, for example, is bad, compared to Frontiers quite perfect implementation!(No positional tracking!) Hope they'll let me use their head tracking with a usual 2D Resolution sometime! The reason why I am doing this is "Frames"! I use the axed power to set my shadows, the textures, the terrain-quality.. everything to high or maybe ultra, 1,5-2,0 SS.. whatever! Everything is beautiful, AND smooth! BUT: It doesn't feel right without Positional Tracking! Maybe somebody, who's using trackir or something similar can help!?

I have a GTX770, I thought: Why not posting it? Maybe there are other people suffering judder on planets, in SRV or near starports... maybe people with extreme Hardware want to try Elite in VR with a extreme Frames-Boost too, just for fun, it's easy! I am not posting this to say you should play this game in this mode, not even I'm planing to, I just want to share my experiment with you and let it also try: (use at own risk!)

1. Set your DK2 to Extended mode.

2. Install/open "Opentrack"
As Tracker you have to choose whatever you are using, my current Oculus 0.5.0.1, wasn't on the list, so I choosed 0.4.2. Bind a key for "center" in the options and press "Start".

3. Start EDH and go to the graphics options, choose your DK2 as display and change the resolution to "948x1080!"

4. First I felt unwell, everything felt damn strange and not so good. But after some minutes I got used to it and played with the options! Have fun!

Here's a Video with FPS-Counter! I think the FPS is quite good, right?

It seems you're getting fps in 60-65-fps. What's so good about that?
I get better in full graphics settings and resoltion without your "trick".
(but still, I'm not happy with my performance on planets!)

Nice try though.

You are right, it could be better. The Video is with everything on and on high, even shadows! 1.5 SS, no AA! You can imagine what will happen after I set everything to low/off! But I wanted to play one time without dropping everything down! It felt smooth and it was nice seeing different effects, like dust and the smoke of my ship! Usually I have to play without it! I hope one day I'll enjoy such fps with the normal VR 3D mode too!

65fps isn't enough for VR no matter how you slice it. This is worse performance than elite on its own without fooling with stuff

Ummm whats the point of first down grading your resolution, and then upsampling it with 1.5SS, that makes no sense whatsoever. You get the same thing or probably better if you don't change the resolution and simply turn SS to 1.0.

The thing is that this is a 2D Resolution, not 3D! It renders only one image, not 2 like in 3D!

I know, I sound weird! Maybe you'll understand why I am doing this after you visited this thread:

I know, 75 fps, low persistence...

I judge after my personal experiences.. If I feel that something is not right, I am real enough to myself to admit that! I personaly don't use a fps-counter, because I don't need a number, that tells me it's good or bad, I wan't it judder free, as long as I think it is judder free, it is judder-free for me!

I think you guys missed this part while reading.

Good Find BoggiBlanko.

@BoggiBlanko, you have the image on both eyes and are fisheye or also corrected to have a correct view trough the lens? The image is just doubled and not rendered for each eye, am I correct?

I also want to try VorpX once home, this means installing SDK0.8. we will see.

upgrade to a gtx970 or 980. you'll get a smooth 75 frames then in 3d without aving to mess about with additional software.

Try it out, just install opentrack and set the resolution. Keep 3D off! Better you try it before upgrading to 0.8, because it breaks Extended Mode!
