Horizons Vote for Khelder's Keep

Yesterday (17 December 3301), while carrying out a routine cargo delivery, I stumbled across an amazing landmark. This outcrop in the middle of a crater is roughly circular and absolutely massive. The sheer cliff faces are almost 10km high! One side of the outcrop is exposed, the other is enclosed by the crater wall leaving a deep, misty, valley.

Unfortunately, this land formation is a bug. The edges are rough and jagged, and there are occasional gaps that allow an SRV to be driven through into a magical, floating, abyss. I initially posted about this here, thinking that I would give others an opportunity to check it out before reporting it as a bug. As that thread progressed, my plans changed.

There are three things that I request:

1. That this landmark, this 'bug', be left as it is. Some things don't need to be fixed. This landform has already been added to the very official Horizons' Wonders list and I would like to keep it that way. If there is a way to clean up the edges, and perhaps fix the gaps, that would be ok.

2. In honour of my father, who supported and encouraged my love of computers and programming, who introduced me to the BBC Micro Model B as well as a little game called Elite all those years ago, and who passed away only two months ago, I name this landform: Lester's Plateau.

(stone location is 27.2195°, 142.3507°)

3. Such imposing cliffs needs a settlement along the edge somewhere. That leads me to the primary goal of this thread. I would like a new settlement (with docking facilities) on the top of the plateau. Its name will be Khelder's Keep. Proposed location of Khelder's Keep is marked with the yellow arrow.

Very special thanks to Ian Baristan for producing this awesome visualisation:

FAQ (well, questions I made up anyway)

Anurinjung already has four settlements. Three of those have docking facilities. Why would they need another one?
Simple. There isn't one on top of Lester's Plateau and there isn't one called Khelder's Keep. If five is too many, then it's perfectly reasonable to expect that a terrible catastrophe might occur (e.g. meteor strike) that unfortunately wipes out one of the other settlements.

If it's a bug, shouldn't it be fixed?
Normally, I would say yes. But in the cases of these Wonders, I'm more inclined to ask that they be left as they are. These anomalies add interesting attractions that can be visited by Commanders if they choose to do so.

Should the settlement be large enough to have a shipyard?
Large is good. However, all of the orbiting stations in the system have shipyards and are within easy access to Anurinjung 2 A. Therefore, a shipyard would not be crucial.

Why are you doing this?
Well, it started off as a bit of fun. Then it turned a bit emotional (for me). Now I'm trying to see it as a bit of fun again. So, why? Why not! ;)

I don't support this. I want to object.
That's not really a question.

Fine. How do I object to this?
That's better. Well, it appears that I have intentionally accidentally forgotten to add a negative poll option. I was hoping that others would either join along with the fun or simply ignore it. If you truly want to voice your objection, then I guess you may do so via comments in this thread.

Really? You're still pushing this silly idea? (Feb 3302)
Yep

Argh! What a pain!

Half way through putting this post together and connection to the forum starts dropping. Eventually got it though.

Thanks for your early support. :D

I have voted for the base. Maybe it could become a community goal??

That's a great idea! Like the recent one to build that station in the Pleiades but this time on the ground. Frontier would be happy, they could force everyone to drive their SRVs on the surface to participate in the CG!

Yes you have my vote would love to see a base there (named after your father) and as you said some things don't need to be fixed just touched up.

No to either. That "plateau" is in my view quite obviously a bug in the procedural generation and should be fixed, not glorified.

Get rid of something that looks that awesome - and that came about through random numbers doing their random things - just because you think they bugged out? Nah. The formation should be preserved in game lore as a wonder of the galaxy, not expunged just because procedural maths might have done something unanticipated. I hear nature sometimes does the same thing :p

To true..

Dude, you can even see the faults in the 3D geometry around the rim of the thing. It's not a curious mountain with a particularly steep side all around. It's a vertically displaced piece of the regular ground.

Maybe FDev can make it look a bit more "realistic" if it's made official - but getting rid of it would be a real waste. The BGS gave us something genuinely unique, and I'd much rather see it turned into an asset than erased, almost certainly never to reoccur.

It looks like the floor of what would otherwise still be a magnificent crater. Anyway. I wouldn't mind (well, actually I would; look at the crater around it, such a nice huge crater, ruined by an arbitrary block of magically elevated terrain) it becoming more realistic, and by that I mean both the steepness and textures of walls, the ultra-flat surface, and the jagged rim that is clearly broken geometry. Meanwhile, I have made a bug thread as the OP apparently decided to not do it lest it may compromise their pet project.
