Horizons tanked in sales?

Only 21k sold on Steam after 5 days and it has even dropped out of the top 10 sellers. The original elite dangerous was a number 1 top seller for a couple of weeks!

I think its safe to say that what frontier tried to pull simply did not work for many factors that have already been discussed to death. The question now is: What went so wrong within frontier and what's next?

The situation I feel is so dire that something drastic needs to happen before everyone is off on holidays. Plenty of developers have apologised, made drastic changes in the past without even being in such terrible position that Frontier is at the moment.

Base game:
owners total - 614,477
players in last two weeks - 161,375
pcu yesterday - 6,150

Horizons:
owners total - 21,164
players in last two weeks - 17,196
pcu yesterday - 1,990

Many people have a lifetime expansion pass, so don't need to buy Horizons. Others realise that they need to buy a better graphic card first. But I bet most of them are waiting for sweet, sweet Christmas money gifts to land in their lap. On Boxing day we may well see a significant surge in sales.

One week before Christmas nobody buys anything that isn't a gift for someone else.

The question I'd ask is was it possible to Pre-Order 'Horizons' on steam ... because if not then that would explain the sales levels .. I'd assume a lot of units were sold as pre-order's

Consider the 'dark number' of people like me who ordered Horizons off the FD store and never added it to Steam.

Reading the graph I see a nice, stable upward trend. 21k sales in five days is pretty good: 4k per day. If we continue the trend we should see 33k after a week. 100k in three weeks. 200k end January. Let's just see how things develop, shall we?

Its hilarious if you think that's how sales work especially when the expansion dropped out of the top sellers in 4 days.

Good point. I had no idea horizons was coming to steam just days after launch at frontier.

The only horizons pre-order was from frontier.

It's not going to be a number 1 best selling title anyway. It's a space sim.

Without having any insight to Frontiers sales figures, I think the OP is reading more (or less in this case) into the steam-stats than is reasonable.

First; those numbers should be read more as new players to the game over the period - a few days - than representing any significant number of Horizon buyers.

Most who bought Horizons are existing players who purchased either the Season-pass _or_ Horizons beta access _or_ lifetime beta and future expansions. These bought the expansion for weeks if not months before the release.

So all in all, I think Frontier made good coin on this expansion/season pass. Certainly enough to finance the next year of development and the next (large) infusion of cash from sales to the next season again.

Of course, much can happen in the time leading up to that. A couple of natural competitors are gearing up for release - so Frontier can't allow themselves to rest on any laurels. The game got issues that need solving, besides just releasing new features, many of which are half-baked (Powerplay, CQC, current crafting...)

I think most people bought it from Frontier directly, as it was made available far more in advance. Its also the cornerstone of their marketing strategy (to generate most of their sales without a distributors). So yeah, the fact that they got 20k sales on steam... only means they got a hellava lot more on their own.

I bought Elite in beta and Pre-ordered Horizons from Frontier in I do not plan on linking my account to Steam, even though all 99% of all my other games are bought through steam.

After such in in-depth analysis of sales, I can understand why you feel it's safe to draw such conclusions.

The question now is: What went so wrong within frontier and what's next?
I don't have the answer to the first question, but the answer to the second question is: we wait for more reliable figures to draw conclusions. Figures that aren't cherry-picked short-term as an attempt to make one's case.

The situation I feel is so dire that something drastic needs to happen before everyone is off on holidays.
I agree. Something drastic.

How about a more complete picture of sales on a longer timescale? Is that drastic enough? :)

It really makes me chuckle when I see the white knights out in force, deriding and derailing any thread that dares to point out some gaping flaws and ugly truths about ED :) Its a fact that Horizons did not sell as well as expected with many players on the fence or just plain not bothered with the game any more......Do you guys not realize that YOU NEED THESE PEOPLE? I have no-one left on my friends list from launch who still plays. You may be quite happy now but what about the time when it doesnt become viable to release content due to poor sales? This game NEEDS players, and at this rate I feel its losing them faster than its gaining them (yes there are players here at present due to the "expansion" launch but give it a couple of weeks and its ghost-town time again)...The proverb regarding "shooting oneself in the foot" comes to mind :)
