My UA's always degrade and does damage. On the surface, ejected from whatever, carried by whatever. It rots out my SRV just like my ship, and destroys itself on the surface. Merope 3B.
UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while and just got up to date with everything that has been posted recently so I thought it was time to add my input.
It seems to me that there are two main paths that look like they have the highest chance of leading to more information about the UA's/Thargoids/Whatever alien race this is:
1. Meta-alloys: Specifically the mission to find them. This mission states that they are found on a planet, but we can infer that they will not be in a standard canister, because they are something to be harvested instead of a commodity. (this has some flaws, since the description implies people have been trading them, so they could indeed be in a canister, but we'll just call that an outside chance for now)
If this is the case, I believe all items found on the surface of a planet outside of a standard canister are in something that is shot to release the item, in this case the thing you'd be shooting at is a Barnacle, and if you're shooting at one, you've found one, and well done! that is a major breakthrough!
In the event that they are just an item sat on the surface of a planet, that requires no means of extraction and is not noticeably near a Barnacle, it is still logical to assume that finding such a material suggests Barnacle activity on said planet, and would warrant further searching.
I think any one wanting to follow this avenue of research should really consider hunting down that mission, because there is a chance that either the relevant POI's only spawn once the mission is accepted, or increase in likelyhood. (of course this is just a suggestion, and i could be wildly wrong about this, but i feel it gives the highest chance of success)
2. Palins CG: It is my belief that this is the major driving factor in the overall quest to find what these UA's really are. Even if The Canonn were to disband today and stop searching, the show must go on. While I do feel the action being taken is having a tangible effect on how these events will form, I believe it to be no more than equivalent to attempting to unlock the "good end" in an RPG, if players failed to discover anything about the UA's we'd get the bad end, if we just achieve the bare minimum of what is put in front of us (like this CG) we get the neutral end, and if we decipher all the clues put in front of us we get the good end.
Regardless it's safe to say Palin is vital to the research of UA's, he is the only one able to conduct detailed lab analysis, everyone's efforts in conducting field experiments have been incredible, but there comes a point where materials analysis among other things only achievable in a lab become necessary to advance understanding.
There is also the possibility that once Palin constructs his research base, he will request lots of UA's as the next CG (which i believe was requested by a certain someone in these forums previously any way) and that analysis could lead to further clues about the Barnacles, and the "Temple" seen in the Trailer.
Either way, I can't start playing Horizons until Christmas so I'll just be lurking here, possibly trying to elaborate on my theories if necessary

Im considering wasting a massive chunk of my accumulated assets on a T9 space barge just for this CG...
The cargo space in my asp, while great for LR smuggling, is apparently woeful for moving commodities...

Yes shifted about 6000 tons in my T9, Not the best ship for planetary landings.
Well that makes my contribution seem wholly insignificant. 420 Tons so far...

In light of others seeing them degrade, i guess that sort of kills my seed idea.
Another thing i thought about, the question "have you listened to them?"... have we really? We heard them and decoded them, but are they actually saying something to us? Maybe they arent broadcasting, they are communicating. The shell around merope could even be to keep us away from merope, not calling us to it. Who knows, its too late and im turning into a conspiracy theorist

Just a suggestion:
I suspect that those Meta-Alloys missions could spawn in Stations in Planets of Hi-Tech and/or Refinery systems.
Who could be more interested in hi-tech Alien "things"?
I really should have checked the outpost in Dahan before I left. It's a Metal works (yes I know, Meta-alloys, not metal-alloys) but metallurgy is something I think would be interested in alloys at least.
They do degrade in space, only if deployed from your ship. Always.

I remember hearing a while ago that explorers were using the *sound* that a planet makes in the system map to determine if it was or was not a planet worth discovering. They were using this to only find the most profitable worlds.
Has anyone tried having a UA in their hold and then using it to examine each celestial body in the System map mode? Perhaps it alters the sound made or makes a noise when certain planets are highlighted?
I'd try it myself but I still can't even find a UA. Where do you people get them all? haha!

Guys, most things tend to fall towards planets. It's like a planet's main thing.

When I jettisoned the UA, it landed just like that!

Yep. Still in HIP 21285, with a UA over 1400 ls from anything else. This guy is just stationary like normal. I guess it's just gravity.
Apparently 2g world + Asp + night time + thinking I'm in my Viper = 19% hull
Something that annoys me is that obsidian orbital is now also malfunctioning ! This is just soooo unfair ! Do you know how much time I spent mining palladium and looking for metals and computer components ?! And now some commanders thought hey let's make some money by selling UA at obsid orbital ! And now here is the result !

It is saying just "MEROPE 1D", as already discovered in day one after launch.
1) If the UA is deployed from SRV, it spells the Planet's name.
2) If deployed from ship on the surface, it draws the ship.
3) If deployed from SRV, then listened from the ship, someone's saying that it does not morse anything.
What we already know from 1.4 is that the UA morses the drawing only if it scans your ship. In fact, in space, if your ship is far than 1000m, there is no morse. Until you enter the 1000m threshold. Then it scans you, then it starts morseing the drawing.
So I suspect that, if you deploy it from SRV it doesn't scan the ship. That's why it does not draw it later, when you listen from it.
It's just UA mechanics, good or bad: how it was designed from FD.
