Went back to a monitor....

... and HATED IT! ;)

So I got a nice shiny 1440p monitor for Christmas, so I thought lets just give E : D a try and see what it is like? Well, after using the DK2 for a year, I could not believe how much I hated playing on a normal monitor. Sure, the images/resolution/etc were great with all the setting at MAX/ULTRA at 1440, but the lack of immersion was so intense I just had to go back to the RIFT right away. It was just missing so much... and not just the lack of head-tracking. Just the fact I could see I was playing on a monitor with my office all around me ruined it.

RIFT FOREVER! <3 :) ;)

Just did the same and partially broke Rift, no longer get Rift in 3D options but HMD works fine... started a thread on it before I tear it to pieces.

OH man. I can't imagine what It looks like on a monitor. Must be so primitive. I've also playing E:D on the Rift for a year, exclusilvely on the Rift, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Yeah.... took me a few minutes to get mine back again - Rift window had rotated, which did not help. But I got it back in the end :)

ikr?! Primitive is a good way to describe it! :D

I'm using a 34" Dell 3440X1440 curved monitor. I wouldn't do it any other way given the current state of hardware.

Maybe next year with the next gen Nvidia 16gb cards and some mainstreaming of VR products it could be worth a try, but for now it's just a bit too much cost and fiddling around. There are also some new developments in depth of field technologies that are coming to VR that should be significant improvements that alleviate eye strain and enhance the quality.

Still a bit too soon for VR for me.

I know exactly what you mean OP. I have a 1440p 144hz monitor and I can run it on ultra at 144fps, but even with a head tracker it just doesn't compare to VR. This game NEEDS VR. It makes it 100x better of an experience. I miss playing it because I'm still waiting for them to get their issues straightened out for the rift.

@GJ51
Have you tried it with a DK2? I have never tried it on a screen. Back when I 1st started playing I was thinking of trying it on the screen but after I watched some youtube videos on combat concepts I decided I would not like it. The person making the video was playing on a screen and he couldn't properly track the enemy because of the screen. Maybe I would like it on a screen but I don't think so. Perhaps you feel the same but reversed lol. The thing about VR to me that makes it such a huge difference is your perspective. You no longer need to adjust to the fact that your point of view is from outside of the world and through a screen looking into that would. You can aim and line things up like you would in real life not like you do in a video game. For example in video game golf when you are trying to line up a putt while looking through a screen your perspective is off. The programmers try to help this by adding grid lines on the green to help show you the angle, dips and elevations of the green. In VR you don't need that because you can line up your shot like you would in real life.

I'm really rather pleased to hear this.
I've also played exlusively on the rift for a year now. With the release of Horizons, and lots of spectacular vids/images being released, Ive been thinking of trying my panel out again. Just for the pure eye candy.

I shan't bother now based on your post.
Ta very much :-]

Im only using my monitor ( 34" Ultra-wide Curved Screen ) when I need to figure out new stuff, or when visiting RES sites. Other than that- Rift all the way! Nothing beats the feeling of "being there" in the Rift. Elite Dangerous is simply stunning in VR!
