Are ED followers more comfortable in their own skin?

I got into Star Citizen because it looked like it was going to be a very similar game to ED initially but with more back story and involvement in such. The more information they release about the design and features though, the more disillusioned I'm getting with it. I think I'm starting to regret getting involved in that game a bit.

It's not that I've stopped following their progress, it's just that Elite is back.

I gave up on the SC forums months ago. The only thing i keep up with over there now is the 10 for the chairman weekly slot on the website.

I really initially liked the look of SC - particularly the single player Squadron 42 side of it. I then read into more of the multiplayer side and thought it sounded pretty great also so i backed the game (this was in summer last year roughly).

Since then I've felt that the game is really going to play like EVE in that large groups of players will dominate the direction future development goes. Whilst i have no doubt that the game will cater to some degree for people that want to strike out on their own, the major feeling i get is that the lions share is going to the big corporations in game.

To the OP: For my part, the mercantile approach to selling ships in SC has put me off a great deal. So although I wish Chris Roberts and his team(s) well, I don't feel the need to get involved in or to comment on the project.

(Except that I just have, I suppose)

I'd never heard of Eve until a year ago. When I discovered it was a subscription game I decided it wasn't for me. Again, I wish those people well who enjoy it, and hope that the Goonsquad types will continue to enjoy it and not trouble us excessively over here.

I don't play Eve because it's online but I backed SC because I'm a fan of the Wing Commander series and Freelancer etc.

ED is more of what I'm wanting to play than SC because for me that's going to be a campaign like Wing Commander and as per my other posts I don't care about playing online, universes etc..

Now if only Lucas Arts.. sorry Disney... would get off their rear ends and remake games like Tie Fighter then I would be really happy

Have to agree with this. They're even starting to refer to SC as an MMO now in their own videos which is something they've always tried to avoid in the past.

I havent heard them specifically refer to SC as that but i havent followed too closely recently at all.

But ya know - i guess there is a place for that sort of space game in the SC setting god knows it worked for EVE online which again is why im thinking it'll play to the group player/meta gamer archetype that EO largely caters towards.

EO (and extending that to SC) can be easily played solo but only so far..you'll get a taste of everything the game can offer but only a taste - to really chow down you have to do the group thing and do it to the meta gamers rules. I did this for near 7 years in EVE both solo and in a large alliance and that was enough of that really.

I just hope SC (assuming it does go the route i think its heading) will try to remember the solo guy better than EVE does in its ongoing development.

Watch this weeks Wingmans hangar. Probably can't read too much into it. It's in there though.

Not sure why them calling it an MMO is an issues though. I'd call it an MMO. I'd call ED an MMO as well. Lots of players in one persistent world. That's the core of what makes something an MMO as far as I'm concerned. (Some people take issue with the fact that there is instancing going on but most MMOs do that so...)

Can't fault you for that. Lately it's become a lot more serious than it used to be though.

There isn't any really as essentially it's semi-official recognition of what the SC design has morphed into. If there is any issue it's that it was kickstarted as a space sim not an MMO. From then until very recently, they've been promoting it as a space-sim (The Best Damned Space Sim Ever!) Suddenly they're calling it an MMO. A perfect example of what the military call 'mission creep'. It's not controversial in itself but it does show the big change of direction over there in SC land.

ED was the first and the player starter ships actually look like space ships and not like planes as in SC. Also DB and crew really put more of the real into ED and it was the same in the past as well.

ED feels more real than SC and less commercial that's what brings me more to this forum, as I think I put only one post on SC.

It is necessary to make the distinction between the regular players which play at several games over the years, and those who are not of gamers (like me). I will play Elite Dangerous and I participate on the forums because Elite is a part of my youth (FE2) and I "waited" ED during 20 years. I do not feel concerned by other games and other forums.

I played Elite, need I say more. I expect to buy SC when it comes out, but its not clear when that will be and what it will look like

To the question in the thread title, I'd say no... Otherwise these kinds of threads wouldn't exist in the first place. That's one of those paradoxymoron thingummies

Been playing Eve for more than 9 years now (well, the last 2 years I only logged in to chat with my bros) and that game really bores me to death now. Ive done all the things there are in Eve with only very few exceptions and it just doesnt satisfy me anymore.

So I am very glad that Elite will be there soon. Been waiting for that day ever since I played the first Elite on my c64.

As for SC, I am not really interested in that one. Theres just too much hype about it for my taste. I also think that it looks too Wing Commanderish and that is not really something good nowadays, at least imo.

I know that, but I asked Krollin where it was said that the DFM was delayed until the end of April. PAX East is in the first half of April and even if they wait until after the weekend to release the DFM it's still only April 14.

[...] giving it to Alpha backers by the end of April...

So, do you have a source for this, Krollin?

I consider both Elite and SC to be MMOs.
They are massive, multiplayer and online.
They just happen to be set in space rather than in an ancient fantasy world.

And Elite is getting a lot of play on other forums right now because it has something to talk about.

Star Citizen is still very abstract at the moment and it'll be a couple of years before its wider persistent universe is ready. And Eve is old hat.
So most people are looking at and comparing to ED right now.
