General / Off-Topic Lemmy Starport?

Why would it be odd that a station is named after a great artist of the 2000s?
It isn't 'odd' but it gets to a point where then everyone wants their favorit artist to get a name somewhere then, and then it can just begin to be an argument about who liked or didn't liked that music and so on and so forth, better to keep it limited, rather then arguing over who gets to decide just exactly what it takes to qualify, and music is something that is very subjective.

Well, the artist has to be dead first, which limits the choice somewhat.

Which is the reason I hope it'll be a long time until we get Suffragette City.

ED References should be limited to Sci Fi related people and things.

Significant people die all the time and before long our entire Galaxy will be cluttered with 21st Century references to dead people

And yes, I cried this morning.

You mean like Norman and Doris's Bingo Palace or Big Harrys Monkey Hangout...stations that can be found in Empire Space.

the ppl ofc ....
So majority rules I guess?
What about if a popular/important asian/russian/heck danish, person dies, but despite popularity in home country is unknown outside, then they don't qualify? I hope you can see the potential problem.

Well there's a Leonard Nimoy one. And seeing as Lemmy was originally in Hawkwind (who did many a Space Faring style tune) before he joined Motorhead (originally a Hawkwind song) it makes sense to me that there should be a starport or system named in his honour.

It's just a thought.

I'm not what you would call a "fan" of Motorhead, but I do enjoy a number of their songs. I'd never have a negative thing to say about the late Lemmy, that's for sure.

Despite my apathy concerning their music, I see no reason why a celebrated icon shouldn't get their name on one of the hundreds of existing stations, or a new one created for the sake of lore.

You have my vote.

So lets get this straight: There are ppl actually against Lemmy Kilmister getting a starport/dock named in the game?

A co-creator of Space-Rock!

A game that has HOW MANY procedurally generated stations?

And if these same people were to travel to a system with a "Kilmister hub" - they would actually have recognised the reference in the first place - before reading this thread?

To paraphrase Yoda; "A grip you must get."

It does limit it, but given that quite a lot of actors and artists and such die each year....well yeah..
http://www.imdb.com/search/name?death_date=2015

And that's just actors.....add musicians? who gets to decide if or if not an artist has been significant enough?

I would say that Lemmy Kilmister has garnered enough fame and awards globally in his long and storied career to qualify, as he is one of the original Rock Gods and was up until his death. He's known literally around the planet, even people who don't like the music he created know of him and respect him for his works and for his partying, which was just as epic as his music.

We're not talking about some guy in some band that a few people know about from Youtube or Facebook, we are talking about Lemmy, a man so well known that you just say 'Lemmy' and a large portion of the people know immediately who you are talking about. He was a Rock God, he was a living legend, not some guy in some garage band that only 2 guys and their girlfriends knew about...

How dare people have a different opinion than yours!
