I found this paper on bactofungicide:
http://cordis.europa.eu/result/rcn/157802_en.html
It's about using a synthetic gene cluster called oocydin A (ooc), used for it's antifungal and antioomycete properties.
The thing that got me interested was that a bacteriophage was used as a host to inject the ooc into the nasty mycetes.
It also got thinking about the OOCHOST region. This part of space is right on the vector core - Pleiades - California sector, about 1-1.5kly from Sol.
It's also the only region I know that has stars with the AE-O in the name.
The theory is probably bonkers, but I will head out there for a look.
