We Choose to Play Elite.....

To all those whiners, i say...

"We set sail on this new game because there is new space to be explored, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space gaming, like shoot-um-up gaming and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on players, and only if the Community occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether Elite Horizons will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war. I do not say that we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered , maybe feeding the fires of war, maybe repeating the mistakes that man has made in extending his writ around this globe of ours.

There was no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space until now. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all players, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation, or not, may never come again. But why, some say, Elite Dangerous? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 39 years ago, play Space Invaders? Why does a Noob Play at all?

We choose to Play Elite! ...We choose to play Elite in this moment and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win .."

Happy New Year...and See you in Space!

If I'm being really honest I choose to do these things because they're more fun than my real life but, you know, you may well have summed up Elite even more eloquently than I have ;)

I chose to play Elite because it's as close as I'm ever going to get to owning a starship like I've always wanted. Our technology refuses to catch up to Space: 1999 levels.

I want fusion power at minimum before I die. Get cracking ya squints!!

We choose to play Elite in this moment and do the other things

I've always wondered about 'the other things'. What were those other things? Was it something about 'wait until computers get really powerful in the 1980s, and develop something in between a space game and a space simulator, then wait thirty more years until computers get really powerful and do it all again?'

Cheers, Phos
