Has anyone come across one of these? What is it? Think it was supposed to be the crash site defence, but it quietly left me alone while I took three cargo containers & it didn't respond, so I left it alone

It was selectable but had no identification on the HUD.

Yes, a couple of them: bugged Stingers. Sometime they do not fly, it's a bug. You can kill them and you'll eventually get a bounty.

I did, but after the first jump the contact appeared, said "follow me" & jumped off- at which point I found I didn't have a wake scanner in that ship!

Usually it means you have to just enter their wake to normal space, no need of a wake scanner. Are you sure he high waked? I'm almost sure he low waked in normal space.

Currently just waiting for the cargo hatch to malfunction. Welcome to add me though (CMDR Dinsy) and I'll shout if need assistance

Have one, he isnt jumping anywhere though. will collect the UA when it drops, but guess it wont be any different to the free floaters

The UA it is carrying is not important, as you can have it very easily now. The Convoy is important, as it is the first spotted since 1.3 ;)
It should jump away sooner o later, losing some of its escort.

Tthe convoy looks like have 2 waypoints back and forth to it.

right now i'm thinking about what they do after the cargo hatch breaks and their mission fails...

is just patrolling between two points in normal space... been like 20 minutes. How long do they take before they jump usually?

Edit: now just sitting stationary...

Can someone give me an update with the UA? I can't be bothered reading through ten billion pages. Last I checked:

- UA's appear floating in space in some systems inside strong signal sources
- Sometimes they're randomly found in conveys with ships guarding it
- Morse code gives a wireframe drawing of your ship or the name of the system/planet you're in
- UA's point towards Merope's star and nothing's been found so far on any world in Merope relating to it
- No-one knows what they're for or what to do next

Anything changed?

Is anyone still looking for the the system and moon from the horizon trailer by trying to triangulate with the background stars in the DSC_1624.jpg?

There were a couple of attempts but it seems to have dried up.

Does anyone actually know astronomy and trig?

I don't remember enough trig to do it but I remember enough to know the answer to where that scarab, barnacle and which system that moon is in, is in that image. To aid in even using a eyeball method I created a star mask from that image

There's 12 good reference points there making for a lot of triangles.

Dumb method, screen shot from a system in that direction, overlay the stars mask and the differences should tell you where to go next.

Do that a couple of times and there's enough to solve using trig and calculus alone.

I just came back today to take a small brake from it.

Nice aid though, are you out there in the area? I can send you some skyview images I made that might help if you want to fly there.

Sadly just trigonometry isn't enough. The two small galaxies are very good reference points but I couldn't really find out HOW they are actually projected on the background. I mean knowing the shape of the background could help a lot, I think the whole skybox inluding the very distant galaxies are on a spere. Moving closer or farther away from the constellation of Barnard-Orion-California will dramatically change the view.

It's a good thing, that will ensure the exact location can be found, but it's rather difficult. Just when you feel like you're close to the spot and only have to move a little farther away the whole view will be chaotic again.

Update on convoy. Followed three jumps and they have arrived around a planet. will post locations as soon as i can.

Edit: 23.18 UA broke free and have now acquired it. We're continuing to follow the type 9

Did you not try the data scan thingy on it?

No, realised after I'd left the site that I should have, but with the current bug with the data scanner not deploying (unless you set "hardpoints deploy on weapons fire" toggle, which clashes with my hotas settings that I don't want to change, so it takes me a couple of minutes each time to go back to control options set it, use the scanner, go back to options & disable it & resume the game) that I tend not to bother with data points very much. But it selected & wasn't identified as a datapoint (no description at all), and it looked like some form of mine.....

nice ... I saw one yesterday ... was unable to select (was partially encased in rock) ... but I thought it might be a "stinger"

Mmm, had forgotten those & first time I'd seen one. Thankfully it was bugged & disabled while I purloined the loot

we droped at 1.16 Mm on the 6° planet on the system arietis sector ID-H a-11 3

I don't have surface scaner.

Thanks to both of you CMDRs! It seems to me the usual random icy planet seen in the past...
Good job!

And happy new year!
