Goodbye Clipper: Hello old Friend

I have never wanted to like a ship more then the imperial clipper, it is wonderful to fly, sounds great, and just looks really cool. But after owning one for a few weeks and really trying hard to like it, i am going back to my Python/FAS Combo.

I would like to do missions in the clipper, but half of them are not available due to being in outposts.
I would love to do bounty hunting with it, and in that regard it does a good job, if i had never flown a FAS i would think this ship was the best thing, but alas, i own a FAS.

So what is the clipper good for? A stepping stone ship to a python for trading? i guess if i did not have access to the FAS, then this would be by go to bounty hunting ship.

So PvP? is that the only thing that the clipper shines in? and only cause its the straight line fastest ship outside the Cobra?

what are your thought....

I used my Clipper for transferring cargo to other members of my wing and for Power Play fortification delivery. That was before I bought my Python though. Now, I keep the Clipper because I bought a paint job for it. It stays parked and without a purpose for now.

It was useful for a while and it's a kind of forbidden fruit since I have no Empire rank. It sits perma-stored next to my Courier.

I loved my Clipper, was my favourite ship. But then Horizons came, and the buff to the FDL made the Clipper into a big clunky target drone. In PVP the Clipper just can't compete anymore. The FDL is tougher, tankier, punches better and is nearly as fast. For Hull Tanking, the Clipper do a decent enough job, but why bother when the FAS does it much better - and have the same weapons-layout only much better positioning of the hardpoints?! Oh, and is nearly as fast.

The Clipper do have speed, but now that is all it got. In every other respect (in PVP), it is inferior to the FDL and FAS.

As for the Python, the SCB heat issues have put quite a handicap on the ship. To tank effectively, one need give up a couple of Shield Boosters in order to make room for Heat-Sinks. Which means if the Python get focused, it'll lose shields and die before it can get away.

IMHO :
- equip a Bi-Weave Shield and invest the free Power into 0A Boosters, Weapons and Thrusters etc.
- fill up everything with Hull Reinforcement Packages, on top of Military Bulkheads
- reserve Chaff to primarily protect SubSystems whenever temporarily unshielded
Enjoy!

I found that a very potent combat configuration. Losing Shields just-about means nothing anymore. And with the Bi-Weave, even the most heavily 0A-Boosted Shields will rebuild in a completely acceptable time.
And getting rammed even unshielded will result in a very bad surprise for the ramming Ship...

PS.
I've heard that the Clipper does make for a very decent Mining Rig, as well as a fast CG runner with good survivability.
Although of limited benefit right now, it also can pick up tons of loot from Planetary Landings (should that be of interest to you).
Not a dedicated long-range Explorer, but okay JumpRange and enough Internals to haul everything you need over a solid distance.

Hehe same. I um one of those undeserving peeps that got the clipper from a CG rather than working my up through the ranks.
I too so want to love the ship for all the same reasons, it is beautiful in so many respects, but it has been in my hangar for months now.
I did outfit it for fast cargo runs with large capacity and no weapons to keep the FSD jump distance up and just run if attacked. It was good but but being only able to land on large pads is a limiting factor, I went back to my Python.

Aye, I was trying to pinpoint the purpose for Clipper for quite some time, but didn't find it. FAS, Ferdy and Python in my fleet are all better ships in their respective roles.

I am not selling it, though.

I think the clipper is still a really good pirate and cargo ship and can still be very good in a RES/CZ (the FAS is a good alternative, but not everyone is a Fed). You can't get that kind of cargo/speed in another ship in that price range, really quite ideal for a good number of bulk smuggling routes.

Missions aren't just anti big ship, they are pro python. Any highly profitable trade mission (500k+) requires a python (180-250 cargo, medium pad, no other ship can do that).

Isn't the FAS lovely, spent a good hour in a CZ this morning just loving it. What a wonderful ship.

The clipper does a good job at being close to as good as the FdL, Python and FAS though, it's a multirole.

Personally, I've used it as just that - as a matter of fact I disliked it so much it was the only ship that ever made me grind. Three days later I was in a Python.

A Clipper to me is the best all-rounder inside the bubble - good at combat, good at trading, good at mining, good at piracy, etc.... Its main downside is not being able to dock at outposts (less important if you have Horizons because now there are lots of planet-side bases to visit too). Due to its number of internals, it's one of those ships you could keep with a basic mulit-purpose loadout and not feel like you have to swap things out every time you feel like changing gears (except for mining of course).

It's not much of an explorer (at least not if jumping distance is a concern), but inside the bubble it can do pretty much whatever you need.

Most importantly, it can run away from anything it can't fight ;)

Even though I'm currently in a Keelback, I do look forward to getting back into my Clipper when the time is right ;)

The Clipper? Terrible shields, decent-ish firepower, bad yaw, an unremarkable amount of armor, and an aesthetic that's reminiscent of a modern-day passenger train. Pass. Its cockpit interior and engine audio are the only things it has going for it, given how damn expensive it is to outfit.

With the exception of trading, the Clipper is just a rather poor, unremarkable ship. At the very least, it could use a significant buff to its shields and a bit more yaw to help make it more lucrative for combat-oriented pilots. The Python is a far better multipurpose ship.

I agree.
After Horizons, the "outpost problem" doesn't really matter anymore; lots of planetary missions to pick up.
It still sucks, but just don't matter much. :)

I love the Clipper. A rate everything except scanner and life support (buy D for lighter modules than the default) and it goes like the clappers. Nothing that can pose a threat to you can catch you, making it the ideal blockade runner. The only downsides is that the default fuel tank is too small and weapon placement is rather far apart, oh and you can't land at outposts.

It's not a Swiss army knife of a ship, like the Python, but IMHO it's more fun to fly.

If/when we get passenger missions the Clipper may well shine again. Premium customers want to arrive in style and have luxurious cabins. Travelling by Python smacks of Ryanair or EasyJet cattle class and the Ferdy won't even come close in numbers.

I always thought of the Clipper as being the same as a vintage auto that you only drive on sunny days on the weekends to go to the meet ups. It's fun to fly and looks great, but other than a stepping stone to a Python there are other ships that outperform it.

I do love the speed though.

I do enjoy flying it, same as I like taking the Cobra and the Courier out every so often. Not really "best" at anything, but fun to fly.

Does remind me a bit of the Concorde

I still fly my Clipper after the Horizons, in my opinion it's still one the best pvp ships in game. Because of the hull upgrades i my torpedoes are almost useless so switched to a only one SCB class 4, hull upgrades and multicannons. Surprise, surprise it's still one the best solo pvp ships in this game, maybe i cannot take down some of the biggest ships but it's still viable for hit and run strikes.

I have to disagree. The Clipper is a great unarmed trader. The Cutter is the same, it just outclasses the T9 and Anaconda at the same time.
The clipper also outclasses the T7, ASP, and all the federal ships in that price bracket.
despite being so fast and maneuverable from a purely combat centric viewpoint it is outclassed by the FAS, Python, and FDL.
i hope you see the parallel im drawing here.
