[Pirating advice request] Best ships to pirate in, region, PP group etc.

Right I am about to CMDR wipe and restart. House rules: ironman, FA off and open.
Roleplaying someone that has just been released from prison has the bare minimum and has had all privileges revoked.
Will treat CMDRs and AI the same.

What will be the best and quickest ship route? And what should my end ship be. I think one of the Cobras will be probably the best ships for me to aim for? But open if people have better ideas. I don't really want to grind too much further but don't mind going one stage higher if I have too. 4 - 5 mill initial ship cost absolute max!

Thanks!

I really enjoy planet based stuff, so I would probably like to be hanging around planet space port if that helps the ship choices?

Id get a bit of money and cash in for an adder, then Cobra MKIII. What do you think?

That was what I was thinking too! Nice 1!

What about essential equipment? Hatch breaker limpets? Anything else?

Definitely adder, then COBRA. Although you'll not be able to fit it for maximum piracy on your 3-4 mil budget :/

What would you say is maximum/optimum piracy? and (obviously) why?

Your choices in a COBRA are limited. I focused my build on PVP piracy so I didn't use hatch breakers. I used collector limpets, interdictor ( obviously), fuel scoop, smaller shield, biggest cargo rack. I liked gimballed pulses and railguns for weapons

Thanks! The 4 - 5 mil was for the initial ship price so that is well within budget! :)

Will you explain your weapon choice? Why not all pulse laser? How/when do you use the rail?

I like the 3 pulses to melt shields quickly. The rail gun is for those pesky cmdrs in their t6's who need some persuasion to let it go. 2 rails to the thrusters usually let's em know you arent fackin around

Heh! Nice :)

Any decent suggestions for a populated but not too populated system or two for me to cut my teeth in? I am still getting used to FA off...

Haha!
"Orcas: Orca"
Brilliant :)

Seriously, perfect! Thanks
tbh the Orca is one of the best top of the line 1v1 piracy ships. just enough hardpoints to get the job done, can mount a c6 cargo rack with plenty of internal space left, as fast and nimble as a cobra III while nearly being the size of a conda, supreme ramming damage, tanky hull, fair utility modules.

it's only downside is that it can't land at outposts.

the python is too slow now without support, especially if it is trying to knock off a trader convoy. I mean, you could incinerate the target if it tries to run, but that's not really piracy, now is it?

A picture of an Orca looking all cute and unobtainable will defo be put on my cockpit somewhere. It is sadly out of my price range. :(

What about the Asp Scout? I love the FoV and maneuverability. which is really important to me because I like the idea of raiding the odd planetary mining installations. Are these any good for pirating? One less internal than the Cobra, they must be better than the Adder surely!

What do people think?

Join up with Archon Delaine too yah?

Some decent Cobra builds in this thread. Cobra MKIII to start for sure. It is a wonderful pirate ship and very survivable in. Also, since you are running ironman, consider using the pilot ejection table to add some spice. Piracy is the hardest thing to get a hang of in this game and you are bound to make some mistakes.

And remember... the most important attribute of a Pirate ain't the guns, it be the charisma! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Love that table! The only reason why it's a good idea to get a decent life-support.

Cobra looks awesome... I think I will use it to go for the Asp S, purely for the planet based raiding! I know it isn't the best but it'll do. Obviously if I suck so bad I will stay with the cobra less effort to get it!

A word of caution on the ASP--you can't run in them. And they are fat and plump to anyone who wants to kill you.

Here's my piracy ship: Kairos Privateer (Cobra Mk III)

I use this ship for smuggling, salvage, powerplay undermining, and PvE piracy. In my area of space (pledged to Kumo) I've never seen a non-Kumo CMDR in a trading vessel, so I'd have to move considerably out from my little neck of the woods before I'd come across CMDR traders to pirate.

The lack of defenses (boosters, chaff, SCB, hull reinforcement, etc) would make this weak in PvP combat against an combat-outfitted ship. The idea with this ship loadout is to pick your battles. With four pips to engines you can outrun pretty much anything you can't outmatch in a fair fight. If they do get your shields down before you can hi-wake out, then the military grade composite should keep you alive until you can get out of trouble.
