overzealous limpet collectors...

So I've recently been trying my hand at mining and have a question for those more experienced spacedogs...

All going well except those darned limpets juuust keep wanting to recollect purged ore/abandoned cargo.
Have I missed something? Is there a setting that specifies purged/abandoned as unwanted and, therefore, not targets for recollection?

Atm I'm having to run away from those little suckers as they keep refilling my hold with stuff I've just jettisoned. Comedy gold it may be, but I'd rather they didn't do it.
I've abandoned the stuff for a reason, capiche?

So. Are there any filters for these things? Because I'd also like them to ignore certain ore fragments at times and not pick everything up like a fat kid in a sweet shop.

Tips/advice welcome.

ps...and what the hell is going on with that damned cargo hatch..!

No they will collect anything in range. If you want a limpet to expire then select something and once it collects it, it will die. But yes it is very annoying that ejected cargo gets 'recollected'.

A poster was kind enough to teach me the workaround. It's not pretty, but it works.
Close your cargo hatch. Set your engine power bar to full and thrust downwards, then release the containers. They will be quickly destroyed as your ship flies into them, preventing your drones from picking them up.

wait until you have collected everything that you've mined and then dump the extra if you really need more room, then shut the cargo scoop.

the limpets will expire after a short while and you can move on to your next roid.

but it would be nice if you were able to set collection filters you had a high enough rated controller.

If you want to manually "Expire" a collector limpet, just power down your collector limpet module in power management and it will destroy any limpet connected with it (if you have multiple limpet controllers you have to do this with each one)

This only works if you select something and then launch a limpet .. once a limpet is programmed (i.e. launched) as a 'collect everything' limpet (Launched while nothing is selected) it will remain a 'collect everything' limpet even if you select a canister or fragment.

Maybe the answer here is the ability to shred cargo.

Bit of an outrage for the occupied escape pods, though.

I've shot up ejected cargo before to stop the little buggers doing this.

For minerals. Just vent them.

Yes, power down collector module and move, or wait for them to expire and move is what i do, depending on how many i have and what i have in my hold. To be honest, i hate to do it to them because im quite protective towards them. I think of them as my little minions...

I believe there's a module you can buy that, while it doesn't solve the issue, it does play the Benny Hill theme tune while all this is going on :D

If the limpet collects unwanted cargo, close cargo bay, thrust downwards and wait for the limpet to destroy the canister on you.

I'd buy that in a heartbeat xD

So I gather there's no real solution just workarounds. Maybe FD will add some kind of functionality at some later stage.
Thanks for the responses.

Well, I have been mining for a while, normally I just let stuff fill my hold.
But when hold is full, btw (by the way) I normally just mine 3 things Osmium, Platinium and PAINITE (my fav:) )
Then I have to make room for cargo, so I either just keep firering prospectors into the rock in front of me, they only cost 100cr each:)
Or I will wait till Collectors expire (12mins for mine ) or just turn Collector module off, this kills collectors:)

What if you put your turrets in "Fire at Target" mode, targeted the thing you don't want and let the turrets zap it?

I've tried a few methods. It takes to long to fire at them to destroy them. Fastest method I found was to wait until all of my limpets expire normally from use. Since I usually deploy them at the same time, they usually expire about the same time. After they expire, dump the unwanted cargo and go to another asteroid that is outside of the limpet range before launching new limpets.

My method is to wait until my refinery is full and both collectors have a fragment they are waiting to deposit. I make sure there are at least a couple of fragments floating around the asteroid I'm mining then close the hatch and reverse a couple of km (making sure not to reverse into another asteroid), jettison as much cargo as I need to free up and return to my asteroid before opening the hatch and blasting the rock again.
I've got a D3 collector controller specifically so they don't go off too far and collect the jettisoned stuff. Usually 2.5km away is plenty for jettisoning, the limpets go for the closest stuff first so that is why I leave a couple of fragments ready for my return.
.
Works for me anyway.
