Just HOW does ED have such a wonderful community?

I've been around here for almost a month now, I've read a dozen threads here and talked to a number of people both in-game and the forums and it simply baffles me how friendly and helpful everyone is. I've played a bunch of multiplayer games in my time and up until now I was under the strong impression that every community has it's douchebags, but it simply does not seem to apply to Elite: Dangerous and my mind just can't even comprehend it. One thing I've come to understand is that Frontier definitely seems to have a strict policy against any negative behavior, but taking some examples I've seen before in consideration I'd say there's only so much the developers can do about it so it feels like there's some higher power at work here. Are space sims really THAT complicated that they turn all of the FPS and MOBA kids away?

I mean this may seem like a strange question, but I'm genuinely intrigued by this. I think if there's a legit reason to this then perhaps it could be used as an example to improve other gaming communities as well.

Needless to say this is a lovely community to be a part of :)

Because the majority of us are old enough to wear slippers whilst playing this game and for us courdroys are a practical and comfortable option rather than jeans. Because we don't worry about what hair style is 'in' as we are just grateful to have some. Because of these things (and others), many of us just want to have fun and enjoy the game we have been waiting decades for.

I think the majority of the community sees all the getting excited and shouty as a waste of time and that being civil costs nothing. Long may that continue.

Because we are mostly of age, and even the younger ones like me have strayed off the beaten path of your typical computer game tropes to find this one. You can spot the, uh, shall we say more 'entitled' posts by titles befitting their content such as "why u no gief Anacondor" and "Fronteer r noobs: xXShadowHunterzXx 14 wayz 2 improve game 4 steam player".

Actually... to tell you the truth I didn't spot those posts. I mean why'd you think I made this thread? :p

Granted, there are those cases where someone failed at doing something in the game and then proceeded to make a thread in here to whine about it, but let's be honest, we all get that feeling sometimes.

Well, I suppose that's one way to answer my question. lol

I think if there's a legit reason to this then perhaps it could be used as an example to improve other gaming communities as well.
So... I guess we'll have to find a way to mass-inject dementia to the general population... and get away with it somehow.

Give it some time. ;) But seriously, FD is extremely unwilling to tighten things up around here: you can be as negative about ED as you want and the mods will stay out as long as you don't start any personal insults or some such. Its almost a miracle it works as well as it does. In a way I believe age really does play a role: it seems older people do rant far more eloquently than their younger counterparts. :D

Going against the thread here (literally) as a 20 year old player of Ed. "Them young'uns" aren't nonexistent! ;)
My guess is that ED demands a specific type of player - i.e. What drew me to it was the reasonably scientifically accurate galaxy and physics, as well as a promise to eventually go anywhere in the galaxy.

We also have way better prescription drugs...there are the green ones, yellow ones, blue ones, blue and green ones....I really like to mix the blu/green ones with a few yellows...chase it down with lavian brandy...yes the one with the tree grub in it....and don't forget to chew the grub after for the little extra kick....I'm telling you...makes it soooo much easier to not talk trash...and give some epic idea's

Could be because ED is quite a scientific game in itself and people who plays is are generally highly educated and of older age.

But oh boy do they rant a lot!

I sir do not rant...I tend to be very negative towards ranter...ranties...the ranting...uhmmm...well you get the idea...

however...I could direct you towards multiple threads I believe started by the young squirts and whippersnappers...and there you would find epic ranting...ranting to shake the foundations of rantdom...truly horrific...terrifying...and then very well worded counter point to said rants...by mature...no not medicated...well seasoned ..adults...who play video games...don't knock it...its very therapeutic.

I like to think it is because this particular game draws people of a very like mind. I have seen some of the " I quit " post , after they spend maybe two days playing. Those are probably the ones who would otherwise spam their negativity at others. Don't really know , just my opinion. Anyway , fly safe !

I reckon you hit the nail on the head commander!

[scanning OP for sarcasm] -inconclusive.

[checking to see if its 1APR already]- negative.
[logoff- the world makes no sense now]

There is a caustic element that think blowing up traders is fun. Ruining peoples game time and costing insurance. I just spent 30 mins jumping to Robigo only to get blown up by a griefer. That cost me 2 million credits and I am now back at a station light years away.

I can make the 2 million back in 15 mins but I'm off to play another game since I can't be bothered to look at the hyper space screens any more. I recommend you join the private group Mobius until such time you have enough credits to get a decent combat ship.

That's the worst thing about getting blown up for no reason. the actual game time it costs you. If you have limited time to play just avoid open trading completely.

Oh my , those pesky pirates just don't know the rules. I'm gonna need three of those green ones and two yellows, as I reread the OPs post.

Dont be fooled by the illusion. ED has an older more mature base ( the game isnt for ADD kiddies ) but the stink of rotting community members is still there. While you might read many "helpful suggestion" post , I see through their constant troll and tard posts. Open vs Solo thread is a prime example.
