Because the majority of us are old enough to wear slippers whilst playing this game and for us courdroys are a practical and comfortable option rather than jeans. Because we don't worry about what hair style is 'in' as we are just grateful to have some. Because of these things (and others), many of us just want to have fun and enjoy the game we have been waiting decades for.

I think the majority of the community sees all the getting excited and shouty as a waste of time and that being civil costs nothing. Long may that continue.

I love my slippers...

Have some +rep OP!

May be it's the genre? I recall Freelancer (Discovery Mod) had some pretty decent forum membership.
Very helpful. Not "too much" ranting or negativity.

This forum has quite a bit of negativity at times but after a while , you tend to ignore it and move on.

I come back again and again, to find answers to my queries and to help others if I can.

It's great to read positive posts like yours.

Cheers

It's definitely related to the poll conducted on the forums in beta (what age bracket are you?) where the vast majority of players were aged 30 to 50:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3245

This means two things; the core of the player base began with a much more mature demographic and the majority of us were just so pleased/grateful/excited to finally play Elite online and in an up to date package, when we didn't think it would ever be possible.

Now, that's slowly changing following release (and definitely since Steam release). I've been here since beta and the mood around the forums has shifted significantly since then.

The forums were so overwhelmingly positive in beta, even about the bad stuff. These days, it's not nearly so positive and that's to be expected. However, the community still has its core and a lot of new players will be mature and reasonable so it's still easily the best community for a game I've been a part of.

It does have its quirks, though... It has an obsession with confusion around server wipes, you best not suggest anything that is immersion breaking because this community is all about its immersion and we really, really don't want our hands being held ;)

It's the most helpful community I've seen though. And the community is more involved in the story of the game than any single MMO I've ever played.

Maybe being a pain in this game just requires too much effort? So there are a few dedicated pirate types (thankfully), but general butt-heads don't play long enough to be a problem.

For example, community goals are likely the only place you can expect to find other players regularly. If your only goal is to cause trouble, you could go to one and shoot traders. But FD have been pairing bounty hunting community goals with trade ones, so there is likely to be someone with a battleconda hanging around to take out the trouble makers.

I've been around here for almost a month now, I've read a dozen threads here and talked to a number of people both in-game and the forums and it simply baffles me how friendly and helpful everyone is. I've played a bunch of multiplayer games in my time and up until now I was under the strong impression that every community has it's douchebags, but it simply does not seem to apply to Elite: Dangerous and my mind just can't even comprehend it. One thing I've come to understand is that Frontier definitely seems to have a strict policy against any negative behavior, but taking some examples I've seen before in consideration I'd say there's only so much the developers can do about it so it feels like there's some higher power at work here. Are space sims really THAT complicated that they turn all of the FPS and MOBA kids away?

I mean this may seem like a strange question, but I'm genuinely intrigued by this. I think if there's a legit reason to this then perhaps it could be used as an example to improve other gaming communities as well.

Needless to say this is a lovely community to be a part of :)

You'll want to avoid the Steam discussion forums then. :)

We like to help but we would never hold your hand. ;)

Inside the game the feeling of community spirit and helpfullness is even bigger. I would dare to say that 99,9% of all players are very friendly and helpful, they're just out there role-playing spaceship travellers.

I have encountered players in all sorts of places and situations. Almost every one of them were extremely friendly.

Even in the very few hostile encounters, most of them were piracy or blockade attempts by role-players, not by l0lz k1dd13s.

I once made Brett C sadface in chat when I mentioned that I don't like the negativity on the forums. I guess I was a bit hasty.

But man do I wonder what other MMO communities must be like if this one compares so favorably...

it is a great community and everyone is sound really........id like to think also that its down to a lot of us growing up and playing games in the 80s ect.....we didnt have the internet and the fastness of finding info that we have now.....i.e we didnt have places like reddit ect....all we had was our magazines like your sinclair,Computer and video games,Crash.....and more....our community was in our playgrounds, face to face......not much nastyness breaks out when your not hidden behind a screen.

plus i like to think it takes a small amount of intellect to play this game,i imagine some of the under 20 cod crowd would fall asleep playing because there isnt enough pew pew.

its a old school community, well give you a cup of sugar if you need it

Unfortunately I have grown tired of this community. There's a lot of negativity and frustrated people venting here that seem to come in waves (often when new players join due to sales). I see this forum as the "everything goes" community, while the elitedangerous community on reddit is a little better (but only just a little). The subsubreddits that spring from the /r/elitedangerous I find to be the least toxic.

What do you mean, we are friendly?!! Why did you come here to pester us with your thinking?! And "we are helpful"?! So you need help... LTP!!!!!!

(here, if you miss douchebags, we can provide those responses too :D)
Fly safe and all the best, mate
Noob

There are of course some very negative threads especially from very entitled people. But the vast majority is friendly and helpful. And don't forget that "dangerous discussion" is just part of the forum, and 99% of negative content is here. Most of the other forum areas are nearly negativity-free. And some have very impressive community content, the exploration sub-forum for instance have a huge community compiled list of galactic points of interest that is both awesome and extremely impressive.

It is said with love and affection but it is definately because the CMDRs in this community are older and shall we say wiser =D . Try getting at 50+ year old to play GTAV. It's all about the experiences.
