Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

Well, if you read into some of the reactions some people get on the forum, you can filter out the folks which i am speaking of.
Note, I'm speaking of folks that simply REFUSE change.
For the record.

Depends on what the change is, it is not always for the better ;)

Horizon's was a change for the better, added a lot to do
Missions overhaul was a bad change, to many broken or not understood types

Personally I have no problem with change's being made to the game as long as they get finished - Wings is a prime example of a good idea not fully implemented which needs changing. Also bear in mind that most of the changes proposed on here are not fully thought through, they have not sat down and looked at the entire game or it's development plan. I am certain there are new features that players have asked for, think they are being ignored but all the while the suggestion has been in the plan, fully thought through and is planned to be implemented in the future... Then I remember wings again.

Oh, I fully agree, and said this myself.
But it should not be simply shot down, no matter what one suggests.

For instance, I made a post about Wing Nav computer so we could form formations, someone shot it down saying basically: "it's just good the way it is."
I respect him, his opinion, on top, he did not get rude, insulting.
But many do want it.
Obviously, since I made that post, I do, heh.

There is room for a lot of new ideas.
Optional or not.
Having a Wing Nav Computer does not mean you HAVE to use it, correct?
Same for Docking Computer, which still some like to see vanish.
I see we're heading in my direction. From hardcore gamers, to some, to very few.

If I keep this up we'll end up at the common ground: none :)
Not at all, there are those.
Not many, but there are some.

Back to the OP - I play LOTS of various games but I'm mostly a flight sim user (DCS, Falcon 4.0 FSX). But it not stop me from putting lots of hours into games like Dark Souls, Mass effect (obviously ;)) and yes - even some Call of Duty from time to time.

Another tangent to throw into the mix: people don't post suggestions in the suggestions forum. They post them in discussion and then seem surprised when they get discussed.

1.5M posts in Discussion, 40k in Suggestions.

Hi,

I have not read every comment on all pages of this thread so apologies if I am repeating what others have said...

At first I thought of ED as being just for the older players but I work with younger guys and have three kids of my own. There are several of the guys I work with between the ages of about 20 and 30 who are very much aware of or play ED. There are also others who plan to play it in future.
Also, my 12 year old son now wishes to play it too, although I have put him off a few times in the last few days as I don't want him to crash on docking whilst playing as me as it's sooo embarrasing to be seen doing so! :) (I will buy him his own copy after next pay day).
My 16 year old son is also interested and has a few friends who own ED already and his 15 year old mate was around ours two days ago and asked to watch me play it as he plans to buy it too. Incidentally my 10 year old daughter was controlling the throttle on my X52, she loves Elite Dangerous too!!

So although it probably started out that way, I don't think it is just 'a Dad's game' now.

Cheers :)

Ok, give me a heads up next time you see one?

Feel like we're chasing Yetis :)

Yeah, I'm accused of being a White Knight when disagreeing with someone's unfair criticism of something in the game (IMHO) and a Hater and Troublemaker when attacking something in the game I disagree with (IMHO).

I love this 'Dad Game' concept, never come across it before.

This is the impression I get and I think it's a big problem for ED. Or at least, deciding what it is, gamer's game or dad game will be key to deciding it's success. Indeed, the devs may come under pressure from gamers to make it more gamery, or rather "less of a game, more 'real', action packed etc", which may put the "dadfolk" off it! I'm not sure there's that much crossover between the two communities (though I'd say I am one) and trying to please both can be tricky.

Who are the dadfolk? No set type but "non-gamer", in term of the breadth of their experience even if they spend all God's hours playing their games. The player base also has a higher than average "settled down, middle aged" contingent who game whilst "the wife" does what ever it is women get up to. Many of the things that attract the dadfolk: the repetition [EDIT: 'routine' would have been a better word], the regular, predictable flow of events, non-too challenging combat etc, are what will put off the gamers and vice versa. And if any of my friends are reading this, yes! I mean you! Like many players of other dadgames like World of Tanks and Warships (also dadgames) many players play those games only and nothing else, which seems to be the case with ED... Indeed, for many, one of the last games they played seriously before ED was the original Elite of yesteryear.

Come to think of it, ED was one of the few other games I have heard WoWS and WoT players talk about playing. In a way one of the reason for the enthusiastic support such games get from some of their devotees comes from the inexperience of their players. They think the game is the best thing since sliced bread, but don't have that much to compare it against. Not that this makes them bad games and or the players bad people. I have played my dadgames for many hours but in the very small sample of players I know, it seems to be the way things are.

That's not to say that dadgames are a small or invalid market, World of Tanks turns over more than $300 mil anually I believe, for example and there are plenty of other examples.

I should also say that I am not young myself. Old enough to be a dad, granddad and technically a great grand dad for a few years now, but I'd still class myself as a gamer, though I am in a sense caught between the two camps. I enjoy dadgames but also like the occasional gamergame, and recently played: Witcher 3, Dark Souls, Cities Skylines, Fallout 4. There's nothing wrong with dadgames, I play them quite a lot. I only have 1 t10 tank in WoT, the IS7, but I have it!

I'd be interested to know what other games people play or have played, if any and no judgement if not, and in conjunction with this, what you think of ED. Or rather, how much you like it. No judgements, more research material! :p You could also mention your age. I am not saying mine! Yes, I am expecting a roasting over this post. Give it your best shot! :D

Almost 2am here, and I was quite tired at the start of the evening, hope that makes sense!

I don't see myself, my brother and my friends and their children in your "categorization" we are all gamers with different taste and will to spent time into one game or another.
Trying to put peoples into little boxes like "dadgamers" and "gamergame" is absurd to my opinion.

Let's see... In 2015 I enjoyed myself playing, the Wither 3, GTAV, The Elder Scrolls Online, Starcraft 2, Battlefield 3, Borderlands 2, Dirt Rally, Cities Skyline, Homework remastered collection, Anno 2070, Valkyria Chronicles, Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Finale Fantasy 13/2, Skyrim, on top of Elite Dangerous (since beta) and now I am starting SW Battlefront and Arc survival evolved. Yes, I like both PvE and PvP games.
And yet I still enjoy a lot the sunny days doing mountain bike riding (almost 3500 km) and rock climbing (mostly indoor) plus doing whatever my wife is up to. ;)

That's weird because when I was a student I couldn't spend that much time and money in video games and sport between school, work (to provide me a home and food) and the homework (obviously).

Thanks Zelos1983 for proving my point.

@Ziggy: See above. "look it's great you just have to IMAGINE it's fun and it will be, modern gaming baaaad, old games goood".

This is blatantly false. I am a modern gamer, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a true sandbox game, which gives me the framework in which to do whatever I want, then leaves the rest up to me.

Modern games are great, but ED is not a "standard" game, it is a sandbox game, which is also great.

The problem is that people like you twist what the rest of us say to try and make us sound like we are just stuck in the past. That is not the case.

Just because more conventional modern games are great doesn't mean this type of game isn't. It just means it's different. Some of us can appreciate both types, some can't. If you can't appreciate a game for what it is, you shouldn't play it.

Well, check for instance my canopy problem.
It's getting shot of basically every 30 minutes.
I run my Vulture in a 1/1/4 power setting, having a Bi-Weave shield.
I have 4 Weapon Power, since it's my play style to go for a target, and kill it before it can hurt me.
Which is not always obvious when you're up against multiple/winged big daddies.
One was quite insulting when I suggested a more sturdy canopy, or a buyably military grade version.
This one said, for one: "I'll be glad when he is back to school".
Now, I admit, I am quite temperamental, and wanted almost to ask for his address, so we could have... a chat, say.
These kind of people are on my black book, and I'm sure (or i hope you can) you understand my reaction.
It's not all he said, but I chose to ignore him, not worth my time nor frustration.

It's not about suffocating, or dying, it was about *to me* critical info no longer there.
Are my weapons still on target?
Is there something (friendly) in between me and my target?
Where the hell is my base, and how far away am I from it?
These things to me are VITAL, I don't care for suffocating, or dying?
I DO care about my bloody information, which is no longer there.
Then this fella, who never had a single fight, I guess, comes in telling me the canopy is not an issue.

Odd, some did like that idea, but these (thank goodness) were left alone.

Haha fair point about the game, I love it, I love loads of other games (Counter Strike, Total War games, Hitman & others) but I completely see it being a "dad game".

I laugh because I really started to enjoy it more when I became a father last year.

I do not think OP meant to put it this way, I think he put it a bit bad.
As I often do, sadly.
Being autistic makes it a bit hard to communicate, at times.
We simply think in different forms.

Just stay calm and keep blocking. The fact is, no matter what suggestion, critique is there are always few responses - you dont get it/go play another game/go play cod for insta win and so on. To the point that if someone ask me - how is the community? - I response - pretty toxic dude.

Sad, isn't it...

Though, I must say, I enjoy this forum a LOT.
There are the usual exceptions, but folks here are darned great!!!
For which my compliments, ladies and gentlemen!

It is a very casual game.......I think a lot of "dad" players like to load up Elite at the end of a week, when the wife and kids are safely tucked up in bed or whatever.......man cracks open a beer or three and just cruises around the Galaxy, watching Netflix and chilling.........for that Elite is perfect........

See, if you had claimed: there are rude people on these forums, not a peep from me. There are quite a few of those. Now I know it looks like I'm nitpicking, but I feel that for conversation sake this is an important distinction to make. Rude people, sure, people opposed to any kind of change .... not so much.

And for the record, I like my canopies breakable for the reasons you stated. All of a sudden you're really deep in serious doodoo, and I'm sure it was a moment you remember in the game. :) As many explorers can tell you, it's quite disheartening if you get a cracked canopy many thousands of lightyears from the bubble and have to tiptoe your way home.

Well, I'm glad we cleared this up. Back on topic and Dads. Which I'm not, thank Zeus :)

"deep doodoo", not quite, I have not lost one ship due to this.
Not ONE!
I DID miss out on a TON of pirates.
I DESPISE pirates. XD

Some! get in every idea topic and simply shoot it down.
Or try to, at least.

Here's a thought, if it's a good idea, it will survive the onslaught.

The problem with this thread is it's not about ideas, it's about trying to discredit a group of players not by reasoned argument but by unproved generalisations.
