Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

I'm a dad: Check
I like games: Check
I liked games before I was a Dad: Check
I like ED: Check
I like other faster paced games: Check
ED isn't a fast paced game: Check

Conclusion - There are no gamer games. There are no Dad games. There are just games. Each have their own merits, and you either like them or not. Sometimes a change of pace is refreshing.

So ... there is no difference between games? There are no general categories into which we might slot various games for the sake of classification? There's no such thing as a core demographic?

Hold on whilst I spit out this 1973 Austin Alegro... oh wait it was coffee, but there's no difference.

For me complex and hard is great. More Social and PvP orientated not great. Just not my thing.

Solo could be enjoyable at least if they would add some depth and complexity, I can't really say that I think that's bad to not like socializing tools or pvp that's just up to personal tastes but according to my experience, player driven content was always the best one for the long run.

You have to be more careful with your pvp games then.
Oh, mere few of them were PvP, some were PvE/PvP optional games, like Shaya and the likes.
But most had cheaters/exploiters.
Even the better games!
I once loved America's Online, man, i RULED when I got me the M249 SWA machine gun.
I used that thing as sniper rifle, as pistol (I'm not kidding you), hell, if I could I would've used it as a Medkit rofl.
And then cheaters rolled in....

He said it.
+1 rep.

Aye.
Cheating, exploiting, all these things, game after game, made me a fairly strong Anti-PvP'er.
That mainly comes with Pier to Pier or client based aspects of games, which sadly ED has quite a bit of.

Much better to have all the actual work done by a server and have the games players play more or less act like dumb terminals... as much as possible which is what a lot of MMOs do, making cheating/hax more or less impossible. But that makes servers much more expensive to run as they need to be higher speced for doing all that extra work.

True, but when someone says Epic and thinks of of a song, it'd probably is this one. XD

Morbid Angel - To The Victor The Spoils is for most "kids" apparently THE issue, where i can't be bothered with them.
Unless, you see rep as spoils, of course.

Note: Since a pure combatant, I am relying on a certain type of missions, sadly.
I could go pirate and just do billions of those missions, but i am no pirate...
Odd, why do pirates and other criminals DO get missions, where Empire/Republic/Independent lack these?

in truth we all play games for that final reward of personal gratification, i guess the point i was trying to make was the route to personal gratification varies person to person, so that...

'some people are only happy playing the game for rewards' - i.e. doing x for the express reason of receiving y in order to feel z

where as..

'others, get rewarded while happily playing the game' - i.e. doing x for the purpose of feeling z with y being a secondary consideration.

Are there cheaters in here as well?

lol...I cant resist...I have been using cheat codes, game genies ect since the dawn of time...its nothing new...its just wrong when peeps go a bit to far and want to ruin online games with it.

all my pc games have trainers...that's the point of pc gaming isn't it?...mods and the hacks....that's why I ditched consoles after 30 years......

I came to the land of the free

It really isnt that hard: he says games each have their own merits so clearly there are differences. Its quite rude to take his words out of context just because you disagree. However, arbitrarily dividing them into two poorly defined groups, and then applying that to random demographics, is just plain nonsense.

You dont want info or discussion, you want your ill-conceived ideas to be validated by anonymous strangers.

Perhaps during the earlier days of gaming it felt like everything was experimental and didn't follow a series of heavily evolved expected tropes. ED feels quite a bit like a traditional experimental title and it makes people angry because it doesn't contain 10 hours of cut scene story with voice acting as required by games which take place in space.

Arguably ED is the must dumbed down, easiest game in the series.

I agree about the expectation of the voice acting but then my personal cause celebre of space gaming (http://www.gog.com/game/independence_war_2) had bucket loads of voice acting, challenge and variety way back in 2001.

One favourite mission involved floating into an enemy base using only small amounts of thrust and newtonian physics, avoiding mutiple enemy patrols with silent running as best you could, scanning various structures at close range to find out which one was the pirate HQ then releasing a small drone to spray paint/grafitti it before sneaking out undetected.

I know, all sounds a bit hard by today's standards...

I'm really sad that you had such experience in pvp :/. Mine was quite enjoyable. I, time to time, step on some cheaters / exploiters but that's not bothering me enough to stop playing pvp games since that's what I enjoy the most. And that's really rewarding to at least kill exploiters! :p

My pvp experience so far: CS source, CS GO, EVE online, WOW (I mainly play as pvper so I consider it as being pvp ^^), TESO (same story), Early CODs (GOLDEN GUUUNNSSSS :p), Battlefield till the hardlines (not included), Street fighter, Dark souls and demon souls (mainly pvp player), TF2, Survival games on pvp servers, and probably some more that I forget! ^^

And thank you for the rep.

Mods, OH GOD YES!
Like in skyrim, Martin's Monster Mod, or houses, body packs (hey, i am a man), but cheats?
Or trainers?
Mmmno, thank you.

Yep, I 'check' with those points to. Just one more:

Middle Aged with growing belly: Check
Oi... less of that... it's just a bit of Christmas pudge.

I surf most days, which prevents the middle-age spread, and puts me leaps and bounds ahead of these sedintary "real gamer" kids, as far as "fast paced" goes. It requires a certain childish enthusiasm to brave the cold Atlantic winter for a couple of hours of fun. Truth be told, we never grow up.

There's a saying that seems fitting here:
Inside the body of every 90 year old, is an 18 year old, wondering what the heck just happened. :D

Did you even play the original at all? You sure you left your rose-tinted glasses off? As for i-war2:

Your father was killed by the Corporations for a bad debt and you have spent 5 years rotting in jail for trying to get justice. Now it's time for vengeance.
I'm sure it has loads of voice acting. It must have been very exciting. Maybe keep an eye on this, I'm sure this will be much more 'gamery-game' for you, and it should be released somewhere this year: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/squadron42

This is the impression I get and I think it's a big problem for ED. Or at least, deciding what it is, gamer's game or dad game will be key to deciding it's success. Indeed, the devs may come under pressure from gamers to make it more gamery, or rather "less of a game, more 'real', action packed etc", which may put the "dadfolk" off it! I'm not sure there's that much crossover between the two communities (though I'd say I am one) and trying to please both can be tricky.

Who are the dadfolk? No set type but "non-gamer", in term of the breadth of their experience even if they spend all God's hours playing their games. The dadgamer player base also has a higher than average "settled down, middle aged" contingent who game whilst "the wife" does what ever it is women get up to. Many of the things that attract the dadfolk: the routine, the regular flow of events, non-too challenging combat etc, are what will put off the gamers and vice versa. And if any of my friends are reading this, yes! I mean you! Like many players of other dadgames like World of Tanks and Warships (also dadgames) many players play those games only and nothing else, which seems to be the case with ED... Indeed, for many, one of the last games they played seriously before ED was the original Elite of yesteryear.

Come to think of it, ED was one of the few other games I have heard WoWS and WoT players talk about playing. In a way one of the reason for the enthusiastic support such games get from some of their devotees comes from the inexperience of their players. They think the game is the best thing since sliced bread, but don't have that much to compare it against. Not that this makes them bad games and or the players bad people. I have played my dadgames for many hours but in the very small sample of players I know, it seems to be the way things are.

That's not to say that dadgames are a small or invalid market, World of Tanks turns over more than $300 mil anually I believe, for example and there are plenty of other examples.

I should also say that I am not young myself. Old enough to be a dad, granddad and technically a great grand dad for a few years now, but I'd still class myself as a gamer, though I am in a sense caught between the two camps. I enjoy dadgames but also like the occasional gamergame, and recently played: Witcher 3, Dark Souls, Cities Skylines, Fallout 4. There's nothing wrong with dadgames, I play them quite a lot. I only have 1 t10 tank in WoT, the IS7, but I have it!

I'd be interested to know what other games people play or have played, if any and no judgement if not, and in conjunction with this, what you think of ED. Or rather, how much you like it. No judgements, more research material! :p You could also mention your age. I am not saying mine! Yes, I am expecting a roasting over this post. Give it your best shot! :D

Almost 2am here, and I was quite tired at the start of the evening, hope that makes sense!

Utter rubbish. Looking forward to your next kaleidoscope of codswallop.

lol on oblivion on the 360 I used to spend hours in dorians house at the start of the game repeatedly spamming the money out of his pocket...and that was console.
im more single player era guy,so a game to me is my world, like a book, bst enjoyed alone.....I don't hurt anyone online.

I just like to play god in my games......fallout 4 for example,im going around like a god dam terminato at the moment...same in gta.....I love it lol.

but if the game grabs me enough, ill respect it and play properly first time around, like all the games ive mentioned, but after that?...its party time lol

and in terms of ED being hacked...your all safe........for the moment lol

My pvp experience so far: ...
God, I lost track, I really lost track.
I played more games than there are books in a library (hyperbole, but you got that), and most of the PvP times were incredibly frustrating due to these unfair players.
Now, i must say, I got quite a temper... *blushes*
Last month I had to get me a new keyb, my old was banana shaped (and STILL worked, dang!).
Oh yes, I got quite a temper, alright.

Yep. Little handies needs to be held and ED is just too big and too sandboxy for them.

Has anyone of you played F-NV?
Ever tried THIS Vault?
http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/39339/?

I had a cleaned up version (GECK, I love you), and used it as my base, mwaahahahahahah...
Oi, the times I got lost in there...

yep mate!...there isn't nothing I have not done in regards to modding with those titles....skyrims lightsaber mods were what started to grab my attention to the pc lol...then it snowballed from there what was possible...I don't know how anyone even considers playing consoles these days

Hmmm ...is ED a Dad's game? If you mean "Is ED a game targeted to mature adults?" No...it isn't. But I wish it was.

Categorizing people, some who have been gaming for 30 - 40 years and have played and designed nearly every type of game, including boardgames, console, PC, FPS, RPG, MMO, strategy, etc..., as "non-gamers", is arrogant and insulting. Perhaps one day you'll find yourself playing a real-life game called "Poetic Justice"...
