projector

Anyone use a projector instead of a monitor. Thinking of going down this route as I like the idea of a huge screen. Plus I will be able to see the small writing☺

Boom
1- Fluffy Co-Pilot
2- 7.2 surround sound
3- Vinyl records.. perfect background for exploring
4- 6ft 1080p projector
5- Gaming/HTPC.. soon to have all the guts upgraded thanks to Horizons
6- Hockey on the backup tv
7- Scotch.. Never explore without scotch

DO IT! it is awesome. One big thing to consider if you are buying a projector for this reason. The biggest difference between decent projectors and very expensive ones are their black levels. This being a game in space black levels are important and the one thing I wish my projector did better.

Happy to share all the experience I got building my set up with you

Yes - I sometimes run the game on a 720p projector at about 72". It's great -- very good for the immersion, especially with a headtracking solution.

You'll get much much better immersion with a HMD and VR.

Multi-monitor/huge screen/projectors are just not the answer.

VR is for people with no life. lol no seriously, not everyone is interested in VR. I'm not sold on it for many reasons, and projection is a nice compromise.

1080p projector user here. 120''. It is a good alternative to having something on your face.

Until you try to do some work and realise that VR is not the answer.

It's a decision each individual must make between practicallity and cost.

They are not the answer to the question "what is the most immersive option possible with no concern at all to cost/ease of use/ ability to use for things other than gaming?"

They very much are the answer to the question "what is a good way to get a more immersive ED gaming experience that I can likely use my existing PC for and also use for many other things?"

Thanks everyone. I don't know much about projectors except I need higher lumens and keystone functionality. Is there anything else that I need to know? I have a budget of £200 and ebay have plenty at that price or am I buying junk?

You should do EVERYTHING in your power to avoid using any keystone adjustments. That adjustment is done digitally by cropping so you are reducing the resolution/quality of what is being projected.

I will say that this is not a path to go to cut corners on. It works best if you have an environment where you can project without any adjustments like that and where you have control over the ambient light. At that budget you might find something with a ton of lumens but the blacks will be gray not black at all.

Other things you will need to consider is how big of a screen do you want? how far will the projector have to be back to allow a screen that size? Does the room allow me to put the projector that far back without needing any adjustments. it goes on and on haha

get 1080p and as Lane1572 says, look for the black level which is set by the contrast level (higher the better). I have an Optoma HD141X

I treated myself to an optoma gt1080 this Christmas with an 82" screen, and I'm very happy with it. Although at first I thought I could just use the speaker on the projector, it was useless so then I treated myself to a decent surround sound setup, Denon av reciever and monitor 7.1 surround speakers. What a difference!!! I say go for it. Do some research though before you buy as some projectors don't do blacks all that well.

Lane... What projector do you recommend for decent black is 4000 lumens not worth it?

Lumens refers to how bright an image it can project. The bigger the screen the more lumens you need because the projector has to be further away. The brighter the ambiant light the more lumens you need to fight the ambiant light. OTHERWISE on a limited budget you want to go for the best black level assuming your desired screen size is realistic and you are going to be in a place you can control the ambient light.

In your budget you aren't going to find a projector with even a 'decent' black level. Just know that in exchange for the awesome huge screen the blacks won't be LCD level black and you will be happy.

this is the closest i could find to mine. I don't remember the model of my exact one off my head
[h=1]Optoma HD25-LV 1080p 3D[/h]
to find one with legitimately good black level you are looking at thousands of your pound sterling. Otherwise just google "lumens for X screen size" and then find the best reviewed one that you can afford that hits that brightness and has good contrast

another thing to think about is how fast is the response time of the projector as some are better than others. The Optoma GT1080 i brought has a quick response time so no noticeable lag. It does good blacks and has a 2800 ANSI lumens rating. I paid £669 with an 82" pull up screen. i did a lot of looking around before i settled on this one and i think for the money its a bargain. I know that there are far better projectors out there but they cost so much more, so really it comes down to how much you want to spend? second hand might be an option if your budget is tight, but factor in the cost of a replacement bulb also.

If you have any question about projector gaming I would head over to the SC forums and ask in this thread https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/264638/taking-the-plunge-into-projection-simpit/p1

the OP has nice 270° triple simpit (it's the bigger Icarus version, see video in post above) set up going up. Also I would try getting advice from Brad Hawthorne, he posts in that thread starting on second page but has lots of experience with these things from what I can see. You can also go to his Nthusim forum and ask him stuff there.

You should think about what screen your going to use as it is a very important part to consider.
