Buckyball Run 9: Move 'em out, let it roll!

CMDR Name: Tayo
Ship Name: D-Minus
Ship Type: Sidewinder+ (Unlimited, Open)
"Who is your personal sci-fi/fantasy hero?": WALL-E

If I get a chance this week, I will also run an Hauler (Rough Trade) in the Open Challenge.

Because my skills total "Wee! Go, baby, go!" and my route plotting is "Yes!" there might be a good reason not to take a Sidewinder, even with an extra fuel tank and a *massive* scoop. I will find out by doing. According to my pre-flight check ("Route: check; Stars: check; Flight pajamas: flannel check, Beverage: check"), it's tight.

If you guys gave training classes I would attend. I would even put on a shield for the event. Who says I can't get dressed up?

I'll be really curious to see how you do in that Sidey. I've been thinking about running one in the second live event, if that materializes.

I'm not that sophisticated about my route planning either; my total planning effort consisted of inspecting the galmap-plotted route to note the unscoopables and make sure there weren't two in a row. ;)

I'm not going to get to fly tonight. I've got RL concerns to deal with and an audio recording project to polish up so I'll be concentrating more on my mixer than on the HOTAS.

and FdL run done.

I think I'm done with this till the 9th if there's going to be a live run. Might get an asp for that, but part of me wants to run the Orca for it.

And the hits just keep on hitting. Little bit o' this, little bit of that, and the King of the Mountain is still the king... but for how long?

Open was where the action was tonight, with six new entries in both Unlimited and Hauler Challenge. While the top of the stack remained unchanged and CMDR Kligg JR holds onto first, a new contender has stepped up and seems serious about getting to the top. CMDR Aken B. jumped the Bucket of Bolts right into Alot's back seat and close enough to the Wedding Anniversary and Grey Mullet to see their tail lights. It's unclear how far the DB-X can be pushed, but Aken has proven it can run with the Asps...

CMDR Heronymus made a strong Buckyball Premiere in the Asp Icarus followed closely behind CMDR Jak, who switched to his Asp The Obvious Enigma to try and gain a few positions on the board. It worked, sending him from 12th to 7th place.

In a very strange case of synchronicity, another first time Buckyballer, CMDR Thor Curzon, submitted a race report just a minute from CMDR Heronymus with another Asp named Icarus. Thor also made an impressive Buckyball debut, coming in just under a minute behind Heronymus. Because the Big Board would crash and spew sparks all over the bar on the Shotgun Shine if a duplicate name is posted, I had to change the name of one of them. I don't know how many attempts Thor and Heronymus intend to make, but from this point on, the leader of the two gets to keep the name and the second-place finisher shall be referred to as The Other Icarus. This is, after all, a competition... ;)

Finally in Unlimited, we have two new record setters: CMDR Birdnose, who gets today's quote of the race ("Still had some hull integrity left, so clearly I didn't push hard enough." See, I do read the notes!) shoved Gravitas Catastrophe, the first Adder of the race, into Obsidian's gullet. This was done in response to CMDR von Rhein's promise to do the same.

And just because I find it hilarious, I'm posting this video of my imagined encounter between Birdnose and Edelgard at a stoplight in their respective Adders:

Edelgard? The ball is in your launch pad.

And finally in Open Unlimited, CMDR Admiral (is that a rank?) Spoon provided the coup-de-grace for the evening by running the Type-9 Sailfish to the finish line at a somewhat leisurely pace, but fast enough to beat a whale and at least one snake. Well done, Spoon! Blondebeard the Space Pirate would be proud!

Unlimited Solo... not much happening there, so onto Hauler Open where six more contestants tried (and failed) to knock CMDR Alot from the top perch. But it wasn't for lack of trying, as CMDR Cookiehole pulled the Tin Can close enough behind Alot's smoke trail. (Wou might wanna check the seals on your canopy, just sayin'.) In a very close 4th, 5th and 6th place, Black Rat's Zealot, Cheetah's Brown Alert II and Timothy Knight's Haulin' A are all jockeying for position, almost close enough to trade paint, with Geo Falke's Ducktape and a Prayer and Mad Doctor X's Also Available in White rounding out the field. Less than two and a half minutes separate First from Fifth in Open Hauler. Like its unlimited cousin, it should turn out to be quite a spectacle!

And last but not least, first-time Buckyballer Zenny dared to experiment and turned the hauler Flying Ostritch into a flying gas tank, foregoing the need for a fuel scoop or refuel stop on the 594 LY trip to Obsidian. While it made plotting the route carefree, Zenny no doubt had to fire up the ol' FSD a few more times to make up the added mass... but as anyone who's run into the patch of unscoopables near the Pleiades sector can attest, it sure would be nice not to have to worry about that gas gauge.

Those are your results for 4 January. We're almost to the halfway point. Keep those entries coming! And as a reminder we will be holding another Live run on Saturday, so keep fine tuning your routes and remember bribes are always welcome as long as they are in cash or booze.

Oh, and by the way, for everyone who pointed out the missing 'I' in unlimited, congratulations but you failed completely to notice the missing I in "Orbital" at the top of the freaking page. It was an I exam, and you all obviously need glasses. BWA HA HA HA ha... (ahem) Don't forget to tip your wait staff. Good night.

(EDIT: just caught some last minute entries on the page - you'll be included in tomorrow's update.)

aw, no mention of the sheer stupidity of what I did for my Hauler run?

oh well.

btw, you might want to take me off Hauler Open, as I ran it and submitted it as solo.

even edited my original post about it. w/e

like i said, I'm probably done till the 9th. have fun all and don't worry, last place is most definitely mine (in unlimited anyway)

Way too much hull left, and I scooped more often than was ultimately necessary. I will run it the other way - to get the Hauler - just to see. More klaxon and flashing red, less of the "I could be scanning this system!" I did honk every system on my passage because I can't help myself.

Far too conservative. I blame the flannel flight pajamas. So. Comfy.

What? You were in solo for that run? No way!

checks the form

Huh. Solo, right there on the form. Well there's only one logical explanation.

I'll get you switched... Sheesh, as if the whole "I"-gate thing wasn't bad enough...

(sorry!)

Leisurely pace?

Ok time to get creative... guess i don't really need shields or the energy distributor.

Lets see if i can't knock another 5 minutes of that time, even if that means that i have to remove the paint on the ship and rip out all the floor panels.

I know I said I wouldn't run the orca again until the 9th, buuuuuuuuuut

FYI, I am planning to attempt one more Hauler run tomorrow night (I think I can knock at least a minute off without doing anything extreme) and that will probably be it until at least Friday, as I am having some (minor) surgery done Wednesday that will require sedation, and will be on painkillers at least another day after that. I destroy enough ships trying to race when I am not drugged, so.. that pretty much means "enforced break" for a couple of days, maybe 3. But I do hope to make the second live run!

Another day another failed attempt to beat my own best time (let alone tackle whatever time Kliggjr has set). Don't quote me on this but I'm considering keeping my fingers crossed that nobody else can beat it either and calling it quits. The problem is that making a daily run to Maia and back is seriously eating into my game time and I have things to do (foremost of which is checking out the site of Saturday's Galactic base jumping competition).

My other problem is that I suspect the final stages of this race will come down to jug filling ...

... and route planning ...

Don't know about you guys but hurling myself off a 7.5km high cliff in a buggy sounds like more fun! :D

Adiós compadres (for now at least).

Edit: re-reading this it occurs to me that it could come across as being a tad sour grapes'y - it's not meant that way at all. As always I've really enjoyed this event, am thrilled to be near the top of the board (currently at least) and will remain glued to this forum thread right up until the bitter end and beyond. Fly like the wind Buckyballers!

So, you've been able to steal the completely secret, absolutely personal and very complex procedure I devised for my flawless route planning...I knew I should have put some patents on it!

And yet, unless I'm doing some mistakes (remove the "unless" at your convenience), is far from being unscoopable-proof...I'm using the old trick of "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me" for star classes, but I got stuck anyway with several red dwarves who were quite brownish in their redness, maybe my fault in misreading the map ...

I must say, the Buckyball Run has been really great so far.
Ah well, I will do another run. This time I will fly in open but because of my paranoia, I will fly my fully combat specced Python.
It might not be fast, but it is definitely safe
.
Scratch that, I just saw that the Obsidian station is in dire need of coffee!

Name: Zenny
Ship: Python (Unlimited/Open)
Shipname: Emergency Coffee Transport
Hero: Honor Harrington

I ran the reverse route in D-Minus, and the time was the same. This includes the longer run to Garden Enterprise AND a Fibonacci spiral approach. What comes after the Loop of Shame...? It works out to about 0.9 jumps / min (with the 2 station stops, 3 loops, 1 playlist update, and 5 questions about space from a 3 year old, included).

More flashing lights, more klaxons, better playlist, same flight suit. 4/4 pips, would race nekid Sidewinder again.

I'm certain some of you veteran racers could shave 10+ minutes off the time. "Weeee!" turns to "Ooooo" turns to "Eeeee" the farther I get from the start point. There is one grouping of 3 or 5 unscoopables in the route I took, but the extra legs bolted on the Minus worked out.

Well, I just had a... moment!

So there I am, happily route planning my way to Maia system by system, making the most of a fully stripped Anaconda: Down to an 8 tonne, 1 jump fuel tank, no shields, bare minimum weight set up getting me 41 Ly range - when not paying attention leads me to jump in to a system with unscoopable stars and no station and that pricey A7 Fuel Scoop was worthless.

Summoning a Fuel Rat, Logan Aigaion came to my rescue and started deploying fuel limpets... after the first couple of canisters hit, who decides to join the party but a Pirate Asp.

Of course, with my FSD and thrusters disabled to save power for oxygen, it took me a bit to get back up and running... made it out of there with 45% hull and wounded pride. Logan bravely finished the job off!

Edit: Turns out it was another player who jumped in on us too!
