Buckyball Run 9: Move 'em out, let it roll!

Ya know, I was just thinking how similar Buckyballs are to MMOs in general.... we get to see all kinds of people and what motivates them :)

We have those that plotted routes by hand to get the best possible results, plus stripping everything bare and running on fumes - what I would call "min-maxers". Nothing wrong with that, mind you! It's just how these guys roll.

Then we have those, like me, who can't be a.r.sed and just plotted a default route with a (relatively) bare ship to MAIA and started jumping - "casual". My personal motivation was getting 1 more dot to my name and getting the Cobra MK IV into the boards :D

Well done to everyone!

ps: I still don't quite understand how the Cobra MK 4 has a smaller jump range than the MK 3 when bare - the hull mass is the same, the powerplant is the same, the FSD is the same - all things being equal, the MK4 should perform similarly to a MK 3.

Only when fully kitted out should the MK4 start to show sluggishness ....

Nevermind I just checked again... Mk4 is heavier :(

That was FUN! Congratulations to the winners! I keep thinking that someone will say "you haven't added my time" and I won't be a winner anymore. So far so good. It's been brilliant to see so many newcomers and so many of the regulars too.

No secret to my run as I plotted using the regular methods and then set the Hauler alight! Thankfully no FSD failures. I think my times would be a few seconds better with video, I'll have to look into that.

This is a bit late as I've only just woken under a pile of boxes at the Shotgun Shine. I appear to have missing time in my memories. Was that alien abduction or the after race party?

What do you mean, "or"...? :D

Everyone just relax... it's just my PSBs :p

I'm guessing it's all over? Thanks (again) to EZ for organising another great race, a true pleasure to take part as always!

Meanwhile, on a mountain top far far away ...

Thanks for organising ElectricZ. Good fun as always.

I too am off on Distant Worlds, but planning to head back to bubble after waypoint 1 and then catch up later. So hopefully be around for a race or 2 yet.

Whoa.

Your Purple Space Babe looks remarkably like my copilot.

Did you repair all the punctures after you both got back from Sadge? ;)

The question is, will anyone dare to go SRV base jumping at Beagle Point? :D

There's a reason I'm bringing two... :D

Excellent. :D

I'm seriously thinking of taking none, my 10t tank Asp with ADS and no DSS could have a serious shot at a record Asp run to Sadge AND could reach both the most distant system and most distant Earth-like. I'm not really bothered about the extra credits for detail scans over the "basic surface scan" that a discovery scanner can to, and I'm not in a hurry to get to elite, but I'd really like to reach the new "most distant system." And I'd likely be the only Asp there.

I'm not keen on "wasting" a trip that passes Sadge, and so the SRV is 6t of ballast, but I'd feel a little guilty joining the DWE and then not taking an SRV! Still I've got a while to decide, it'll be weeks before the DWE reaches Sadge. :)

Now that I finished my first Buckyball run, here is my résumé: It was fun.

Actually no, it was utter delight, I haven't had this much fun in Elite for months.
Also, the sense of community amongst the Buckyball runners is incredible which is part of why that event was so great.

It was my first Run, but definitely not my last.

See you all in space :D

PS: I hope you enjoyed the coffee

And here they are, spoilered to save your scroll wheels, the final standings of Buckyball Run 9!

At the front of the pack in time and number of categories won, CMDR Cookiehole with an amazing time of 15 minutes, 8 seconds in Open Unlimited for the 594 light-year jaunt across the entire bubble. Makes you wonder about people who complain about flying 100 LY, doesn't it? ;) Cookiehole also finished first in the "Live" run, earning a special reverse-reverse dot for the honor. Don't let Bucky catch you putting that dot up on eBay, Cookiehole. He will come after you!

CMDR Kligg picked up his first reverse dot for his finishing time of 15:43 in solo/private. In Solo hauler, CMDR Cheetah picked up his first dot with a time of 17:15.

Finally, in another amazing display of navigation and piloting, CMDR Alot is four-for-four, racking up a 100% win rate for at least one class in every Buckyball in which he has participated, including the Buckyball Run A*. I don't know what Alot uses for fuel when he runs these things, but it gets him across the finish line in a hurry. It can't be an accident.

Top times per ship type were as follows:

  1. 15:08 Asp, Cookiehole
  2. 15:21 Hauler, Alot
  3. 15:55 Anaconda, Furrycat
  4. 16:16 DB-X, Aken B.
  5. 19:35 Lakon Type-6, Anuranium
  6. 20:31 Imperial Courier, Timothy Knight
  7. 20:33 Adder, Birdnose
  8. 20:57 Cobra Mk III, Aken B.
  9. 22:23 Lakon Keelback, Crotalus
  10. 22:44 Lakon Type-7, Cookiehole (replaced by Asp on board)
  11. 25:14 Imperial Eagle, AntiDisco
  12. 26:12 DB-S, Goemon
  13. 28:11 Eagle, Tayo
  14. 28:52 Cobra Mk IV, FoxTwo
  15. 29:37 Imperial Clipper, Tyzah
  16. 30:56 Viper Mk IV, Earl Dumarest
  17. 31:04 Lakon Type-9, Admiral Spoon
  18. 34:08 Sidewinder, Tayo
  19. 35:10 Fer-De-Lance, Geo Falke
  20. 41:25 Eagle, Felix Jefferson
  21. 42:14 Orca, Geo Falke
  22. 45:42 Python, Zenny

Now, I dont know if cross-bubble speed records could be an ongoing thing like the Buckyball A* or the A* Challenge, but everybody listed above has in fact set a record. Be proud! And remember, when someone sets a time, someone else out there will see it and have to beat it. ;)

BBR9 by the numbers:
  • 61 unique pilots. (some more unique than others...)
  • 93 unique ships.
  • Most popular ship in Unlimited by runs made: Asp (74)
  • Second most popular: Diamondback Explorer (12)
  • Third: Anaconda (9)
  • Runs made in Open: 106
  • Runs made in Solo/Private: 59
  • Fewest jumps made from HIP 78136 to MAIA: 16
  • Last run of the race: Mark "Insane" Photon at 23:45, 9 January 3302.
  • Most Popular Hero: Han Solo. (Though in your hearts, you know it was really me.)

And I meant to do it, I swear... but I forgot to include fields for Insurance on the race form: number and total cost. Dammit! Maybe next time...

Speaking of next time, whether you made a run in BBR9 or you're kicking yourself for missing out, be sure to check out the Buckyball Racing Club. Unlike The Buckyball Run that happens whenever Buvky feelis like it, the BRC has a whole schedule of events running year 'round to satisfy your need for speed, with trials that will test all aspects of your piloting skills. Bucky wouldn't have put it above the scoreboard if he didn't want you to click it. Here it is again, just in case.

So... have you clicked it yet? Better yet, have you bookmarked it? Bucky thinks you should...

As for the timing of the next bona-fide Buckyball Run? Never can tell. It's a big galaxy out there and you never can tell where Bucky will turn up. But until that time we next meet on the Shotgun Shine, Bucky Salutes you! o7 And thanks again to everybody who came out to play. It seems like I'm always repeating myself at the end of these things when I say this, but it's been a blast and a half! :D
