Eyes open at last

Hello all,

I've been living with my old 450 GTS 1gb DDR3 that i thought was handling ED surprisingly well (60 fps on med/high settings).

Horizons has made me upgrade because I want to crash into planets and then drive around like an idiot!!!!

New EVGA 970 GTX now plugged in and my god, now I know why people say the graphics in ED are great!

Looks so different in a higher resolution (1600x1200) with nearly all ultra settings. So much more depth and so much smoother.

Right, need Horizons and SRV and for work to leave me alone for a few days, 7 should do.

Sorry if no interest to you all, but my wife won't get it, and is asleep, so had to share the fun somewhere!!!!

See you all (looking much prettier) soon!

Agree totally. More noticeable though and therefore may fail the acceptability test. Figure I can introduce things bit by bit but gpu needed to be done.

Look forward to it though, but for now eye candy is great

Ha! Wasn't meant to be a PC for gaming when i built it but ED brought me out of gaming retirement, now want to enjoy!

I also recently upgraded my GPU on my computer, from a 1gb Radeon HD6570 to an R9 380 4gb Strix. Not only did I notice an improvement in the graphics (and consequently in the ability to upgrade my settings in Horizons), but I also noticed a side-benefit in that everything else just seems to load quicker and as smooth as butter now since the upgrade. :)

Wait until you see it with an Oculus Rift on. You're playing a flat cardboard cutout version in comparison. Your mind will be blown.

I have an older ASUS MB and use the same card you just replaced. Do you think a 3.0 pci express card would work for me too?
I'm not sure with they will work with the older P41 board.

PCI-E is backwards compatible, so your card will run as PCI-E 2. It's not really a huge issue at the moment; you'll probably only lose a few percent of GPU usage. PCI-E is really for the next five years, and only the current highest-end cards will take a noticeable performance hit (although you won't notice it as you won't ever see that performance without upgrading CPU, RAM and mobo.

I bought a new gaming PC to play Elite and was mildly impressed. The other day I plugged it into my Bravia for one reason or another and suddenly realised I need a new monitor too!

Thanks Monkey!

I replaced a 560ti a few weeks back with a 970 myself. My CPU is suck, and old dual core 8500, but its still able to run the game quite well...though I may be able to fry a steak on the cpu. Still, the gfx card upgrade made a substantial difference in not only performance, but in visual quality. Planets look awesome. Oh yeah, my power supply blew a week after upgrading the vid card... despite having the wattage, it just wasn't happy. It was old and weak. I can now use my newer better PSU on the next system build. Step by step.

Display wise... my 24" flatscreen just isn't cutting it... going to need to hook into the 48" 4KHD TV. Assuming the woman doesn't explode with me parking my tush in the middle of the living room flight sticks and all. May need to wait for the bigger upgrade before that..
