General / Off-Topic Why is everyone getting new GPU's this week?

I'm thinking it's just that the computer technician shops are opening up back now after the holidays or something is happening, or is it just me?

For me, I went to the technician as well after the holidays when I pre-ordered my 980 Ti for Christmas because I knew that unscrewing out the old 760 and shoving in the new 980 Ti wouldn't be a wise idea, I think it requires some programming and testing (that I have no knowledge of how to control) before it's ready.

No matter what online game I go to, no matter what video game forum, I see people talking about their new graphical cards. A lot of people getting 970's too. So, what's going on?

Some people will have got a Christmas bonus from work. Some people will have saved up all year. Some people will have partied with the credit card. Some people will have received them as gifts :D

Unless their old card has stopped working, personally, I think they might be wasting their money.

There are new cards coming out this year, new technology and of course, the Rift.

Even if you don't fancy new tech or 3D, it's kinda obvious that existing stuff will become old and the prices cut from the current £600+/$600+

All I've ever done is remove the old one and shove in the new. Though I do feel a bit wary handling that much fragile money and trying to poke it into place. It's especially fun when you realise you forgot to take off some piece of plastic capping. And the cards change so frequently you're never sure if you're doing it right until it clicks into place. The cards should work all by themselves, you just have to install the right driver, and sometimes some software.

Technician? Nah, whether or not I have the ability to swap out a card had nothing to do with it. Horizons, on the other hand, being more demanding... That is my reason.

Z...

All of the above! :)
Got mobo, CPU and RAM for Christmas. Got myself a nice case and SSD to go with them. PSU and GTX 760 moved over from old system into new system.
Next upgrade will be in 3-4 months once I've paid off the cc and saved up for a 900 series nvidia card.

Sales, its always the time to buy technology. Especially computer parts, as the new improved models have come/coming out and shops still have the older version in stock to get rid of.

Yes, after Chrismas the prices cut down, because of the new oncoming pascal, so, a lot of people had Nev Video card as a gift, and money, and now they are buying it.

pascal? I don't know when its coming out and neither i can wait for it there are just no point, and i doubt my 6 years old GF9800 gtx can pull out until than he is in his last leg.
