Oculus pre order information

Thanks for clarifying the exclusivity questions which I personally never thought was happening. Can you at least commit that you will get it working with the Oculus instead of just using the generic "we are committed to VR words."

Some details on the issues faced would likely keep the wolves at bay. Many of us are concerned that there is some serious incompatibility between the Elite 3D engine and Oculus Direct Drivers that FD think may never get resolved. What concerns us even more is the responses to questions like this never make an attempt to allay those fears.

Hey all,

I just thought I would post a quick follow up on this thread.

First of all, I just wanted to confirm that VR certainly is a priority. We really do believe in the immersion and experience VR brings and we're delighted to leading the way in that field. As we've said previoulsy, we are actively working with Oculus and we will be keeping people updated as soon as we can.

I can once again confirm that we do not have an exclusivity deal with Steam VR.

Hope that helps.

Zac

Appreciate the update Zac. :)

Thanks Zaz,

For ANYONE with even basic understanding of the current trend in VR and gaming, there was never any doubt that you want all VR hardware to work great with ED. Good work!

Thanks for the update Zac.

I will be getting the Oculus (the Vive's lighthouse sensors are too big for anyone without a dedicated VR room!) so I'm hoping that Elite will be playable on the CV1 soon after release.

Hopefully I'll be running another VR shipyard at this year's LaveCon. If I can get three other VR owners there and avatars/multi-crew has shipped, we could have something really amazing this summer!

That would be incredible! Looking forward to seeing you at LaveCon. :)

You're not forced to use the Vive's lighthouse sensors. You can play seated with it as well.

Tell me more of this VR shipyard. Sounds like I may be a VR owner who could help out :)

I am more confused now after reading this thread...:s
Zac, could you be any more cryptic? :D
It's almost like you worded your posts to stir up the tin foil hat wearers :D

Going to take the risk and order one.
Will I throw an almighty wobbler if it turns into a door stop....probably...but it will be self inflicted.

For now my DK2 does just fine.

That's the most ironic statement in the history of the internet :D
+10 internet points!

Truth is, I highly doubt Zac even thinks about the tin foil hat wearers when he makes a post. I highly doubt anyone does

This is great news, and really what a lot of us were looking for. Thank you.

Mehh to the people complaining that Frontier are not working on this.

I imagine most of you are not developers, and come on folks - 3D is hard, VR doubly so.

I would hazard a guess that CV1 support *is* a high priority for Frontier, if only from a sales point of view - to not support it would be stupid. But I would also guess that the CV1 is still a moving target regarding the SDK - we are still pre-ordering the device, not getting it in our hands.

Until Oculus say "This is the final API you need" for the Cobra engine to support Direct Mode, why throw all your resources at it? There are other more pressing issues to be worked on, and bugs to be fixed.

For me, it's a shame I can't get the DK2 working at this time and it's mostly sat in it's box since ED didn't support it anymore - but I will be ordering a CV1 and I do expect that by the time I have it in my hands, Frontier will have solved most if not all the issues.

Yep, good to have reconfirmed that they are working with Oculus and haven't been frozen out.

I'm just happy it's a concise response, unlike the previous "well we'll see what happens" feeling they gave me. Beating around the bush doesn't help anything.

I can echo that sentiment. Haven't plugged mine in since it stopped working correctly.
Just proves my point that it's the software that sells the hardware.
