SO Occulus Rift sales start tomorrow 6th of januar: who is getting one?

Eh? $599 US is roughly £410. But that's without taxes - the UK price is £499. Both US and UK have shipping on top of that.
It's not, it's not even close!
Are you sure it's US dollars you're using and the app has updated the exchange rates in living memory?
WOW.......i think they missed a trick with that price. Money grabbing!
If they came in at £399 say, they might have sold more which equates to more profit! This priceline seems to suggest to me that they fear that they may not sell huge quantities so they are cashing in on the amount they will sell.
Poor going. Of course i have no inside info on my assumptions, it is based on my opinion only and i could be wrong!
You're pretty much wrong on all counts. They're selling the hardware at a loss, as the did with the DK1 and DK2. The preorder ship dates have already slipped from March to at least June within 48 hours of going on preorder so sales are more they they can deal with for now. Read this editorial on Engadget, it will clue you in on some of the reasons for the price.
I did cover my bottom, by saying i could be wrong and huge apologies if my post upset anyone and they have jumped out of a skyscapper window because they read my post and felt upset!
Still too expensive for me, and it seems the UK buyers are getting stung by the Doller/pound equality! Again this is my opinion, and please don't self harm or commit harikari on reading my posts!
I doubt your post had any more affect than a speck of dust on anyone but it's great to see your concern for other's well being.
We're not getting stung to any real degree on the dollar pound thing either. The $599 is without taxes and equates to roughly £410. Add on VAT and it's £492 - the retail price is £499 (both countries have shipping charges on top). Honestly if £7 on a £500 purchase upsets you that much I'll Paypal you it on proof of purchase.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest that no one has actually committed HariKari on my postings, i am disappointed that my post are not the be-all and end all of the human race, but i'll get over it
It's not the £7 that bothers me it's the 500 odd english pounds that puts me off investing in one of these. Had it been £399 to my door i may just have asked permission of 'She who must be obeyed' to have some pocket money to buy one, but asking SWMBO for £500+ of my hard earned spondollies will get a swift response of NO F'ing Way and no nookie for a month for having the audacity to even suggest that i spend MY MONEY on something for me.
Joking aside my friend, i do think £500+ is too much for the moderate man, but as stated it is my humble opinion here, i wish them success so much in fact that they may consider reducing the price? Or i wait for a good one to appear on Fleabay at a price that i can hide from SWMBO!

Waspo, the trick is to not tell them youve spent 500 sobs of your hard earnt spondoolies. In much the same way as she doesnt tell me when shes spent 500 sobs of my hard earnt spondoolies on some new shoes, several new outfits and a hairdo. It works both ways my good man.

Quality, never under estimate the longevity of said earned brownie points as they have a half life less than the recently found new radioactive elements
500 quid is too much for the average consumer but that's not a bad thing. If oculus pushed out cheap vr to the masses for the first consumer version you'd have everyone and their dog snapping them up, trying to run them on their pcworld laptops and having an awful sub par first look at vr which would kill it dead.
The first CV has to be amazing regardless of price. There's a reason why you need a $900 pc to run it and the market for CV 1 has always been targeted at people with decent rigs.
As for vive vs OR I thing there's something everyone is missing. OR has always been aimed at a sitting down experience. It can do standing and moving VR too as shown in the latest demos at CES with the touch but that's never been the ideal implementation. People may be saying how good it is to be walking around a large space and how immersive it it but in every demo video I've seen they're in a big space free of clutter with someone following along behind them to hold the cable. Whilst it might give the edge to the Vive in some of the latest reviews I think the "holodeck" fantasy they're marketing isn't a reality for the majority of the small amount of people who can afford one yet.

I find that brownie point have an effect on memory, IE: 10 mins after earning them, the spouse seems to have forgotten all about them, so you need to use them right away. On another note i was very excite last night about the rift and when i my daughter came by for a visit i told her i had pre-ordered and she ask me how much (she`s a VR buff also ), my wife overheard me, Man that`s wasn`t preatty. the only thing that saved me was reminder her how cool the DK2 was and that this is even better..

I would have 100% got one if it was between £300-400, Currently waiting till hype dies and prices drop hopefully they will by next year

Funny thing though - they both chose the Vive, but based solely on what they said I would pick the Rift! They said the Rift had a better display, less screen door effect (something I know I want, from experience). They said the controllers (when they come) are better on the Rift. The only part that bothered me was the Rift having a bit less FoV than the Vive. All the talk about walking around and stuff - utterly useless to me, my room is too small and I don't really want to do it with a cable attached to my head anyway! What, you have to have someone trail around behind you like at the demos, or install some sort of curtain rail on your ceiling to keep it out the way. Their excitement was mainly about that aspect... and it means absolutely nothing to me! Going to be interesting times.
