Do blue-circle POI sites always show up at the CENTER of the circle?

Also, while looking around last night, I ce across a couple of planets with a square dark patch on them. As I got closer the dark patch persisted but a narrow field of view corrected itself and got lighter wherever I looked, with dark "low res" ground surrounding. Its likely just a graphical glitch, though I hope it's not related to barnacles somehow.

Might as well upload it.

Here it is. Unfortunately I returned to 1A to try and get a repeat of the noise but no luck. Then I tried returning to roughly the same location but still nothing. Maybe it was just some background noise from Merope 1B? Who knows... Anyways, I have to end the search for now, will return soon!

For those thinking they are mostly, if not exclusively found in the dark: Instead of "tidally locked" you could also look for "far away".

Question as I've been unable to find an answer:

If an UA is dropped near the Merope star, what does it transmit ? Its name/coordinates ? Or something else ?

No, they may be near the edge as well.
Keep in mind, you need to come within 2-3km before it triggers the rendering for the first time though.

It transmits something that when plotted on to a graph draws out the ship the person is flying, no matter where it is dropped

If it helps anyone else, to help find what's inside a POI without having to land, I tend to fly at 2Km (not less) and when I see one approaching, I aim directly for its center. Be sure to adjust your scanner to max range (Page up / page down if not re-mapped). As I get closer, I drop to ~500m, doing my best to ensure I keep the same heading so as to not miss the center of the blue circle. I fly angled downward at slow speed, ensuring vertical thrusters keep me at the right altitude. when done correctly, I have found I can see the object (base, wreckage etc.) most of the time on the first pass, and almost always on the second pass. I have enough money not to care about the specific contents of the base / wreck / POI and for the moment I'm just hunting for barnacles.
The second approach I have been testing for non-POI is to rotate 180 degrees, stay at ~10km and look upward at the surface (in an ASP, there is almost nothing blocking the view). Have not found much yet well outside the bubble, but it worked within the bubble. Although there's no major progress, I'm monitoring the thread for other helpful hints. Good luck all!

What I do is fly to the middle, hover at around 1.5k, and switch to the classified camera to look around. Much safer than twirling the ship around and possibly doing a faceplant into the surface.

Talking about the constellation a few post before and the one from the tralier

Here is the names and the distance from merope
pleiades sector HR-W D1-42 = Star 3 9.05 Ly
93 Tauri = Star 5 125.29 Ly

I wonder if people who set their graphics level really (and changing levels) low have a better chance of spotting something fixed? A grid view like nutter's (bug) seems best but..

TO pics nighttime, 10 km up, maximum gamma.
1. low settings:

2. ultra settings:

There is hardly a difference that high up. But, and this might be most important, there is an option to turn of shadows in the graphics settings.
It might help to turn this off during daytime to avoid any special sites to hide in shadows of valleys. Wait for daytime to confirm.

[OutOfBox theory]

OK, the background on meta alloys indicates they are found by "deep space explorers" and that they have come to call the things "Large Barnacles".

Given the assumption that deep space explorers are not the most scientifically nor linguistically adept; The name "Barnacles" may be a layman metaphor.

Thinking along THOSE lines, I am made to wonder what caused them to call them barnacles..? Heres a mini skit possibility

"well hiya! Bob, LTNS!"
"yup been out scooping UAs for profit"
"been doing that a lone time? wow your paint is really chipped away!"
"yeah- long time since I last repaired"
"paint looks cool like that! hold still, lemme check it out"
"ok"
"really ni- woah! hold on there, Bob! just what the heck is that thing lodged up in your anaconda belly piping?!"
"whuuuut?"
"yeah! it looks... eew. grown in there, like a... I guess like a Barnacle"
"?!?? let me go to classified cam!... woa!! never noticed that before"
"what do you think it is?"
"I dunno, but try to shoot it offa me!"
[pew pew]
"Its gone.. hmm "meta alloys".. I'm scooping it"
"I heard some people spend lots of credits for those"
"You should go get your ship repaired, bud"
"Ive tried but all the stations I normally dock at are broken down..."

[dun dun dunnnnnn!!]

[so; Techno-Typhoid Mary vector]

But hey- its just a theory... but have you checked your.. ah.. plumbing lately? Is there a Fungus Among-us? [doesnt fit, exactly, I know- just luv saying it- and the intent carries through]

If you want manage better in multiplayer shooting games turn all the unnecessary graphics settings off. You get more stable fps and better sight to your enemy. Those moving trees and grasses are pretty nice but...

Why are people still looking at Blue poi?
You are looking for the wrong thing. Use your eyeballs!
That's my tendency now, but way out in the Pleades, there's not much to see from 10Km up (sometimes nice terrain, but you can only do that for so many hours, and cover so much distance). If the barnacles are very large, then that's great. Needle in a haystack still. hence the idea to turn graphics way down.

Different question - what's the likelihood that the devs would have placed these in systems with auto-generated names (numbers & letters). Doesn't make sharing information or discoveries very easy. I'm tending to focus my searching to systems with more easy to spell / distinct names.

Needle ?

what we're looking for is a bacteria in a hay stack...

Well all good luck with the search.. I had been looking, found an interesting poi with lights in Merope.. Drove in to discover an outpost heavily gaurded.. Cool I think perhaps they are protecting something of note. NOPE 6 sentries guarding 4 canisters of TEA! With that I'm out

And you're limiting yourself. Its been said by MB that there are both kinds.

It hasn't specifically been said, if you read it the wording does not specify that there are those kinds of POI's, only that some may be randomly placed. he doesn't say there are non-persistent ones.

Yeah...

Barnacle Facts
1. Are they in the Game? - They are in the game
2. What Region of space can they be found? - Can be found in the region of the Seven Sisters nebula (Pleiades). - or Likely to be found in or close to nebulae, specially the Pleiades
3. Where do they live? In the void of space or on a planet? – Planet
4. How will they appear? - Either a POI or a specific placed location.
5. How common are they? - They are exceedingly rare.
6. Has a player found a Barnacle? - No
7. Are they linked to the Meta-Alloys and Mission? – Yes
8. Do I need a Mission to find them? - No

Barnacle Unknowns
1. What do they look like?
2. Do they show up as a blue circle while flying over a planet?
3. Are they only found with a crashed ship?
4. Are they only in the nebula or could they be near it?
5. Are they only found in dark areas of a planet (Craters or Trenches)?
6. What star type will the planet orbit?
7. What type of planet do they ‘live’ on?
8. Do they prefer cold or hot worlds?
9. Does there need to be volcanism of any type?
10. Are they related to the Horizons trailer with the green glowing objects?
11. High G(Gravity) or Low G or any G?

Theory (s)

Barnacles are shown in the Horizons trailer
1. Video shows SRV on a 1G +/- 0.1 world
2. In a misty dark area
3. At a crashed ship site

'Shell' UA's Point to Merope

1. UA's all point to the main star - They could be related to Barnacles

Succinct - and accurate. Repped.
