OK so maybe I have a bit of an opposing theory on how to beat the riddle here.... bear with me.

The general consensus from the settings crowd is to blow up the gamma so you can see in the dark....

WELL.... what about doing the opposite instead? In the trailer we are presented with green glowy things that seem to light up in proximity of the ship... I've observed a nav beacon from almost 2KM up and it has a RED light by it that is barely visible when the gamma is all the way up I'll try and turn it down next time I run into one to see if it helps. I'm thinking if you're looking for something twinkling (green) in the dark it should be dark not lit up like daylight.

It's funny all the hype about the 'clues' from MB. What he suggested was pretty much EXACTLY what we has planned as soon as Red discovered the shell in 1.4, and what we immediately tried as soon as horizon launched. All he has done is bring back the fly-by-night scientists who got dissuaded by 10 hours of no results.

The only real clue we have is from the release notes. Mentioning barnacles in it was not by accident, they would be mad to give away 'mystery' information like that. They needed to associate them with PPOI as a clue because we would have never found them hunting as we were.

Has anyone come across data points like this one before?

It was in a random POI, guarded by skimmers and surrounded by a few small structures. I assume it's irrelevant to the barnacles but figured I'd throw it out there since I've never seen one before, not pics or on anyones streams either. It gave me Empire data point intel.

Another thought that occured to me: what if collecting data point intel in Merope and selling it would eventually trigger a Galnet story about things that have been going on in the area, ie barnacles? It's not likely, but it would be a somewhat interesting way of doing it with ingame tools.
I came across a data point POI like this earlier this afternoon on Pleione 4.

Far bigger, with outbuildings and protected by a couple of sentries.
I particularly like the shaft of blue light shining up into the sky.

Well picked up a UA for some more research, they are pretty easy to find now if you know where to look, popped up in seconds after entering system.

Since these are appearing in a bubble, maybe the entire space inside will become thargoid space and maybe barnacles are anywhere inside of it. Like a defense grid or a boundary marker

Something they stopped making apparently.

What's a defender? An Old Earth vehicle?

Landrover Defender > 21st Century early SRV concept vehicle running on fossil fuel. Production stopped Feb 2016 due to lack of safety to pedestrians !

You hit em they die apparently...

Update from the Anaconda wreck:
moving your ship in sunlight and switching of shadows shows the full planet below in something similar to noon light.

To me, it seems like night spotting with high gamma is easier.

Additionally, I found a light in the distance, which also did not generate a POI on radar. Inspection revealed a mining site. This was easy to spot in night light conditions from several km height.
So, if the Barnacles generate light, this definitely will help.

Sure, it was the area of most interest to us already; but there's a big difference between it being our current theory (we've had *many*) and it being confirmed by the Producer. "Go to X, you'll find Barnacles there".

Yeah...

Theory (s)

Barnacles are shown in the Horizons trailer
1. Video shows SRV on a 1G +/- 0.1 world
2. In a misty dark area
3. At a crashed ship site

'Shell' UA's Point to Merope

1. UA's all point to the main star - They could be related to Barnacles

To quibble barnacle fact #2 the quote is "areas of space" not regions and the areas they are found in is 'nebulas' one of which is the sisters. Sadly the threading and search functions of this forum is worse than usenet.

Maybe add a "thus spoke Brookes" section here with the exact quote in context of the question answered?

Okay I really had thought a barnacle would have been found in the Sisters by now which is why I'm searching the Veil West, I would have applied that method to see if they were also here. So there's something we're not getting.

Now what's the odds of winning the lottery after you've cashed the cheque? Pretty good and I think we've seen someone cash the cheque Micheal Brookes. When asked if the barnacles were working he went away and came back how many hours later? If we assume he or employee fired up the game and then first went and checked a known placed one and then checked for a random which took him how many hours? So if you know the trick/signs/steps involved they take that long plus or minus a bit.

Sorry I know this is all obvious but just trying to find other angles or variable to come at this with KISS and time hadn't really been accounted for. It's like asking someone for directions to the museum and they say sure it's 12 blocks from here.

For a possible limiter for those searching tidally locked I'd suggest flying along the terminator lines with an eye to the dark side, as something that takes about 4 to 6 hours. In the enhanced image of the barnacles posted I thought it looked like the sun was in the background at a low angle and I thought terminator but checking back the enhancement brightened one of the lights on a barnacle so much it look like a sun. Still checking terminators might be worth it.

Maybe the barnicle organism likes it really hot on one side and really cold on the other the difference creating the meta alloy shell. Afterall on QI it was revealed human mother's milk feeds two organisms not one, one set of nutrients for the baby and a distinct set of nutrients for the gut bacteria. Meta-milk.
