Discussion Open Letter to Frontier Developments

Hey guys,

As promised we've discussed the topic for you all, sorry for the delay in replys but today was the first available opportunity to review the thread.

People are free to continue use of the existing companion app API, though please be aware this is something we hope to expand and improve on the future. Since we don’t yet have a date for that, use of the existing one is fine, but we ask that you do so in a careful and considered manner – for example not polling it continuously. We will bring in guidelines and an approval process over time too, but for now please be aware that we will stop apps that are not well behaved.

We are passionate about the development of community created content and very much see the value in the tools that are being created which is why we are happy for this API to be continued. As we have mentioned before, we would like to create a new API which allows tool developers support to create their own tools but this will not be a short term implementation and is instead something we are considering for future development.

Thanks for your patience, we will keep you informed as and when we have more information to share.

Holy mother! TBH, I never thought this would happen. Thanks! :D

Update: I forgot to mention the person who made the current situation a reality. Its commander Andargor as he created the first publicly available api based tool. "EDCE: Elite Dangerous Companion Emulator". The intention afaik was to make a proof of concept that could be used as a base by commanders.

Fixed my name :D

For the record, I was not the first to create an app that used the mobile API. In fact, there were a couple of people during and after the beta (summer to autumn 2014) that posted about tools they developed, but their posts were removed. Although they did not explain how the API worked at the time, which is why I did my research and published EDCE to show how it's done and help people develop great tools.

just saying I thoroughly enjoy coriolis, ed-td.space, edshipyard, Inara.cz and etn.io for my adventures. The way I see it, we have laptops and netbooks today, so why couldn't we have those resources in 3300? It's a ton of fun having those "in the background" on my kindle and phone while I stay in-game on the pc.

I just hope that as long as these tools respect what Frontier wants with no data-scraping, and we do it as a communal effort helping each other out with just what we've found, like me finding an Asp Explorer let's say in a system that doesn't say it's there on ed-td.space, that we should still be able to do so.

Are there any plans to 1) fix the elite dangerous app for iOS so it doesn't crash under iOS 9? And 2) update it so things like galnet news feed are available?

i support this motion, official, improved, enhanced, stable API will help the game grow

in fact FD shall think about adopting some of the community sites as semi-official ;)

If I were making the decisions then the first priority would be to add an extra auth method where you can generate an API token on your store account to give to any apps utilising this API, i.e. no need to give your game login to such apps.

I, too, like the idea of official API.

Frontier could add to the immersion buy publishing in game where ships and outfitting items are and, on occasion, having those 'out of stock'. which could be ordered for a slight premium in price or discounted when there is a lot of them in stock.

And, assuming that FD are reading this, could you/they alter the final quit message. I never want to quit, I always have to quit, but I hope to be back soon...

OMG, Spoiler sites, if a large part of the community can't play without them then there is a huge issue, gamers becoming too lazy to find traderoutes the old way ? How is it possible they are even sharing that data? Doesn't it completely spoil the game if everything is already on a website?

Everyone has their own way of enjoying a game. Why do you "need" them to enjoy it the same way that you do?

I support this effort to improve the API. This is a logical progression of the game and serves to improve immersion and a greater feel of community both in and out of the game itself.

Yeah remember this is the future it isn't like you can get on a computer and search for something you want to buy that would just be ridiculous.

This is exactly my thought as well. People share information, that is exactly what we are doing right here and now. To pretend that commanders wouldn't communicate with each other in the future is asinine. I don't care whether the tools are in game or 3rd party*, information sharing tools are essential and immersive. Not having them is immersion BREAKING.

*Not entirely true, 3rd party tools means Frontier is focused on ED rather than tools.

make economy, missions and events tie in with each other, the dynamic galaxy will break any 3rd party trading tools that can be created. By sheer weight of volatility

I think that a lot of commanders would welcome changes in the BGS. As in the BGS becoming more dynamic and changes in the BGS more visible and affecting for example the markets.

Exactly true - in the year 3302 I would expect information sharing to be ubiquitous and more advanced than anything we have today. The information systems in the game are terribly under-powered when compared to the faster-than-light miracle ships that fly around everywhere.

Today its exactly one week after the 5th of January 2016 when Zac Antonaci, Head of Community Management of Frontier Developments, created a post here in this thread. Where he said that the use the iPhone companion app api is LEGAL. Source. Tools which use the api are for example EDMC, EDAPI and EDCE, all can be found on EDCodex. The information is optionally distributed by EDDN. A LOT of (trading) tools use those the information retrieved by those tools.

EDDN is a good indicator of the usage of those tools. I decided to check the EDDN-monitor to see if anything has changed. A screenshot is in the spoiler tags.

EDDN Status - Schemas.jpg

If you look at the stats you will notice that the number of messages send to and distributed by EDDN has not changed since last week. After the release of Horizons the usage of EDDN has certainly increased. The first few days show a very deep decline but that was because after the update the api stopped working for a few days. The last weeks show a remarkable similar pattern - high peaks in the weekend. There is NO increase since the 5th of January. At peak times approx 6K market data messages are being distributed. Which means 250 per hour and approx 4.16 per minute. 0,0694444444444444 per second.

To put this in perspective. Two popular tools are EDDB and Maddavo's Market Share (MMS) which are both connected to EDDN. Some stats.
EDDB: Systems with stations:19,066. Total stations: 44,988. Stations with prices supplied by EDDN: 27,456
MMS: Database currently holds 45016 Stations in 19020 Systems, 26305 Commodities Markets in 13304 Systems

Which means that for EDDB approx 61% of the station have market data.
Which means that for MMS approx 58% of the stations have market data.

Note: Horizons introduced a lot of new planetary stations with a market. I've this feeling a lot of those prices are not distributed/shared (yet).

For those 26-27K stations for which market data exists (out of 45K stations) it would take approx 4,3 days before each and every stations gets refreshed on average. That is unless I've made a mistake somewhere. If so feel free to correct me and I will edit this post.

The purpose of this post is NOT meant to start a renewed discussion about trading tools and their effectiveness, influence on the market. I thought it would be good to put things in perspective.

I also fully agree with this letter.

When the game launched in 2014, I understood that maybe it was too early for a proper API, and so did a lot of other commanders. Instead of waiting for an API, they resorted to crowd sourcing data until a better option came along. It has been over a year now and this barely functioning, recently "legalized" API is still the best we got? This awesome community deserves better, IMO.
