Wiped the commander I've been playing since beta!

... and it's the best thing I could have done! Was thinking about a soft reset (blowing up all my money in a ship) to get a bit of challenge back, but finally decided to go the whole way and reset my save.

So much low level play that I missed in the beta phase, really enjoying tramping from station to station and picking up missions... then checking out the destination, maybe filling a couple of hold spaces with cargo... answering those distress calls and unknown signals. It's slow, but far more fun than grinding! The oculus helps of course to keep things interesting, but really enjoying playing the slow game and just being Han Solo for a bit... instead of rushing a grind to be captain kirk ;)

It strikes me that there is something wrong when the only way to continue enjoying playing an open ended game is to start from scratch.

What did your fleet look like before you wiped?

Lots of maxed out light and heavy fighters, Type 9 mining ship, Asp Explorer with optimum exploration, piles of money to buy pretty much whatever I wanted.... boredom....more boredom...

I think a lot of the problem is money gets far too easy to get, I really love the early game because you actually have to think and plan your activities to get by.

Don't miss out on Surface work - Horizons really works for the new commander.

Yep, really enjoying that too. I've just built a new VR computer for my Oculus and planet surfaces now run very smoothly in VR. Spent an hour last night just driving around a city looking up at the massive buildings!

One thing that would help alleviate the boredom and some of the negative aspects that it causes would be a true hardcore ironman mode where when you die if you don't have/don't utilize an escape pod in time you simply die and start over......completely puzzled why the option isn't offered....

When I did a clear save shortly after full release (that 1 jan), I had a blast as well, and was amazed at how quickly I was in an A spec Cobra now that I knew what I was doing (~3 hrs)

Primarily because many many people moaned that it was to difficult to make money and would take forever to buy an Anaconda so FD increased the payouts. <shame>

It's the same for many games. Take the total war series. I love playing that but rarely finish a campaign because after a point it gets too easy, the early game is always more fun!

I think its something right with the game myself
.
Very early on you make decisions over the direction you are playing the game - by clear saving ( ive done it twice now) you have an option to explore different aspects of the game
.
For instance I never realised how good a Cobra is in battle if you fit armour and good thrusters. I would be in an ASP before I had properly explored the limits of the ship.
.
Horizons holds little interest to a multi million pound player - its like asking that player to haul Fish and mineral extractors there is little interest because the gains are low - for a new commander the gains in horizons are excellent and encourages you to go to the surface

Probably because ever actually admitting that your high-ranking CMDR was in Ironman mode would be like painting a target on him.

But there's nothing stopping anyone from playing that way - the "clear save" option is only a few clicks away when you get to the insurance screen.

Blimey man, props to you for doing it. Each of my ships has a story (ive kept all of them), well apart from the marker sideys, that i would be loathe to destroy.

Have a bit'o'rep - there's no way I'm wiping my save anytime soon!

I've also been playing since beta, but perhaps not as much (or as well) as many. Anyway, I've only just managed to get myself a Python, and I'm loving the experience, but, yes, I can can see what you mean about money suddenly getting easy to make. With 200'ish tons capacity, all of a sudden 250K-500K loops seem to be everywhere, the missions have become even more rewarding, and all this in a ship that really does not fear interdiction. Not at all. In fact... I welcome it... :D

I actually mean a separate mode where everyone participating in it plays by the same rules.....not as part of open.....you are right that as part of open play it would be suicidal as it would encourage bad behavior. As an aside I also realize that if everyone in open was forced to play by these rules the amount of angst and tears could fill oceans.....

Well done man. There's nothing strange to decide to start from zero in a game like elite.
How did you feel when sitting in your "first" sidewinder? :)

BTW you will fall back into the grind very soon, you know? expecially now that you know how to do it better :p
