UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Did anything come of the guy who said he found a spire-like object then blew up in Pleione? I guess not?

In other news, I've been listening to the planets' signals from space, and a handful seem to be making kind of the chirpy/bird-like noises similar to what you hear from an earth-like world when you're in system map.

What I find strange is between even two planets of the same type and same approximate size, one may make the noise and the other may not. Also you may have a rocky and a metal-rich world both making the noise.

I need to continue listening and revisit planets with the chirpy noise to make sure it's not just a random occurrence. I should also visit planets outside of Pleiades Neb to see if its just a random noise certain planets make, and not indicative of the presence of barnacles.

I have just realized, that Pavlou Keep is NOT Prof. Palin's new base (stupid-stupid me).

Palin's outpost is going to be built on Maia B1BA.

Palin is FDEV's in-game story teller about the UAs.

Palin (=FDEV) said, that he wants to build this outpost to study the UAs far from inhabited space. However maybe he has a secret, other agenda: to study Meta-Alloys and Barnicles.

The best way to do that, if he is very close to them.

This was my thinking as well. B1 BA is far from the main star. It is pretty dark due to the black hole and is tidally locked. The only light comes from the Nebula on one side. I feel that the choice for this relatively small planet for the outpost was a clue to search there. it is the only official mention of a planet by fdev that also references a UA. Part of the main storyline will be taking place on this planet. I, of course, have searched this place until my eyes started to melt out of my head. I have found nothing. I have searched the poles, the equator, everywhere. Without knowing any kind of landmarks these barnacles might be attracted to this whole thing is impossible and annoying. We need an actual clue trail to follow. Meanwhile I have been cruising along this planet for hours on end as a UA eats my ship to death.

Does anyone understand this when looking at the galaxy map for Maia?

The blue star has "flickered out here (I guess that is the effect of the nebula)". The red star might be the M type star (5A) and I guess the white circle is the BH. But it looks kind of strange to me. I'm not familiar enough with zooming in on the galmap in wierd systems though to know if this is normal.

n.b. the two stars disappear "into" maia if you zoom out.

Palin is late as usual, the research outpost should have been finished last week!
One day he might start pulling his weight around here ;)

Maybe his ship crashed during approach -> UA spill out -> UA's infect planet -> Barnacles did grow from "infection"

Visual Search for rare items is highly prone to error.

It's official- I was idly googling "hidden" and "elite dangerous" (I'm convinced I read somewhere that DB said something about some planets being hidden, but I can't find a reference...) but I did find this learned paper http://people.duke.edu/~mitroff/papers/14_MitroffBiggs_PsychSci.pdf.
I guess it's because humans have evolved to detect patterns (to ensure the tiger isn't creeping up on us in the shadows, to the extent that our minds tend to find patterns even when they aren't there- its called apophenia). So our minds work on detecting known patterns, but if we don't know what pattern we're looking for then we may miss the visual clues.

So I think it's possible someone may have seen the Barnacle clues but overlooked them, or maybe we still aren't looking in the correct places/ways or for the wrong pattern.

I think Prof Palin's latest announcement is probably being held back by FD to allow the Canonn & friends time to have fun looking.. many people have said it but if you think it's becoming a grind then do something else, either in-game or out of it. It's a game & all about having fun.

But the posting rate is still far too high- I spent all last night trying to catch up on posts in this thread, instead of playing. Keep it relevant guys, *please* !!!

I see that from time to time

Even if we knew which specific planet to search, with 5000 CMDRs searching it would still take a lifetime to come across a placed barnacle by chance. Ergo, the current strategy of scouring planets is likely only to yield a random POI barnacle...eventually. My guess is that FD would prefer we found a hand placed one first, so the likelihood of a random one is extremely low for now.

There is something we've missed, or a clue yet to be released. The only definitive in game links to go on are the UAs and the in game description of meta alloys. I have to admit I was unable to discern the morse code from the one I captured, but to those who have been able are we 100% the co-ordinates it transmits are a drawing of the ship and not perhaps a planetary reference and co-ordinates on that planet somewhere in Merope?

Commanders
I have twice gone to pick up fresh ua's, listened to them, then take them to merope and listen, and there seems to be a new sound in merope. A sort of grinding slow pulsation like a wave. I would like it if some hardcore UA fanboys could help confirm this. I understand it "chitters" the morse, and has a high pitch that increases with UA damage. Is this correct? Trying to confirm this is a new sound but I still need to do a lot more recording and studying.
Here is a link to the audacity files of outside merope and in system http://tinypic.com/r/azgoo/9

Please have a look and let me know how bad my space madness is.

Fact #1 : Many thing's you find in Elite is inspired from real folklore and literature. Meta (Meta-Alloys) for example translate to "beyond" in greek. MB's told us we had to start going beyond and explore in the nebulas to find meta/barnacles and that the seven sisters are a good place to start. Those alloys/barnacles spawn in POI's that was confirmed so let's stop speculating for the next 2 months as to where we can find them and stop assuming they look like crabs.

Fact #2 : We know the seven sisters are related to the Pleiades who were born on Mount Kyllini wich is a very high rocky barren looking mountain 2000 m (6500 ft). Mount Kyllini coordinates are : 37°56′23″N 22°23′49″E if you apply those numbers to each one of the planets listed below who knows what we could find.

Fact #3 : The Pleiades in greek mythology are : Maia - Electra - Taygeta - Alcyone - Celaeno - Sterope - Merope

Every one of those system can be found in-game. I would focus searching on those systems from a logical standpoint, avoid large areas of nothing but focus on mountains and rock formations. It's far more efficient and time/cost effective to focus our manpower on specific terrain areas rather than just hoping to run into something by scouting large empty fields.

Anything you see in the trailer is too subjective to make wild assumptions and go on a goose chase for all we know it could have been anywhere or done for testing purpose while making the trailer.

Galnet was at 23.12.! "within a week" ...

So he is always up over the hills with all the evac shelters.

Nothing in "KN Muscae" (only one landable) so far and hardly the planet in Brabens video (as there is no blue nebula to see)...
KN_Muscae.jpg
Trust no one!

I'm going to KN Muscae. 900LY to go but my 5 years old son comed back from school and he want play some Disney Infinity Star Wars with daddy....So i will reach KN Muscae in the evening (hope 22 PM GMT+1)
I will start to spend like 10 minutes in each system starting from 150LY from KN Muscae to see if i can pick up a UA on the way. If some others CMDRS will be around there in the evening will be nice to wing up.

Who was Pavlou and why does he have a 'keep'? - Not sure I've seen any other 'keeps' as surface installations elsewhere.

If he's this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stel_Pavlou, he's written a sci-fi novel about drilling up a new material in the Antarctic, linked to ancient sites & an unstable sun. Bit of a long shot - but we are into long-shot territory, I reckon.

Whatever the case, Pavlou Keep is pretty well defended; a couple of missile-firing guardians and several sentries with better than usual hull strength. Took out my SRV pretty fast, despite pimped up hull & ammo (but I'm not a very good shot). But from 300m distance, it looks an unusual installation. Anyone got inside it to have a search for clues?

Does anyone here know of an orbit simulator?
Where I could put in the data of Merope's planets/moons and see the orbits at a faster pace?
