UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

I was exploring some deep irregular canyons. It was really rough terrain and hard to drive, it was spooky and really felt like I was in the same environment as the clip from the Horizons video (except for the gravity). Anyway, I don't think your efforts of Arial search will produce anything. Nothing renders at that height from what I can tell. The environment I was in was almost impossible to spot anything from air. Even the bases don't render that far up, usually I fly less than 500m to really see things. I actually target a height of 200m, and even then things to the left and right at a distance wont render. Get in your SRV's and get into tough spots. Here are some images from my efforts in the canyons. http://imgur.com/a/sZseq I don't think they would make it easy to find secrets. I am not recording the sounds my UA makes, but I do believe it is significantly different in some systems or planets. If someone has the time to record the sounds in different systems in space and on the surface, it may reveal a clue. I do believe having the UA is involved in finding the barnacles or meta alloys, it is the key in my opinion. I also believe you don't need one, you can get lucky without one, but to find one efficiently, we need to understand what the UA is trying to tell us.

Another thing that may help is AI Artefacts, I only say this because I have found a few around Merope, but I was unsucessful in picking one up. I destroyed the first one accidentally trying to pick it up while getting swarmed by unfriendly NPCs. The second time the NPCs destroyed me. They are found in Weak or Strong Signal Sources close to the sun. I will experiment more when I get a chance.

Happy hunting.

Here's a little idea...

MB said:
A) We will know when a Large Barnacle is nearby.
B) They are not so large as to be seen from Orbital Cruise

In combination this suggests to me that the barnacles may emit a loud noise, like the UA does.

Or they are large enough to be seen from medium heigh (if you are not a blinded parrot of course) but not from orbit.

ok, thx
like someone that doesn't know how to read coordinates and repeat like a parrot what moderator said, I didn't read the last updates on 1st page.

Give it a rest mate. Mods do a great job here, and it's a pretty thankless one too, no need for the sly digs, and stupid avatars. Take it with a bit of dignity and move on.

This certainly may be the case but can it be heard from the ship, kilometers away, or do we need to be close enough to see it (albeit obscured by geography)?

I still think that the best way to search would be for a wing of commanders (at least 2) to conduct a combined air and ground search. One will be on the ground, looking around in the SRV and illuminating, other in the ship, with a farther view distance. The two communicating and helping each other will both be fun and efficient.

I'm sure there are commanders doing just this. I'm planning on joining a wing as soon as I sort out my mic issue.

the source code request was clearly a joke; someone doesn't liked it but it doesn't matter.
Adios, and thank you for all your help.

Just on MB's recent comment :

I'm no astronomer so am theorizing here about something I know very little about..

Is MB's stated association of nebula and barnacles actually direct, or is it indirect?

The Pleiades nebula has a bunch of blue (b class) stars.

As in, is the occurrence of these types of stars correlated with nebula, meaning the barnacles could be more to do with the properties of the star (and hence the planets) than the nebula as such, the nebula just being a likely side-effect of the type of star?

Been googling to see if b class stars and nebula are correlated, found this not sure if it's actually true though. =p

So perhaps.... Some older blue star have ejected rich elements, often this will result in a nebula.

These rich elements are used by barnacles in the production of meta-alloy.

Blue stars + nebula being an indicator of an environment suitable for placing a meta-alloy production facility?

Similar to what I was thinking soon after he said it yesterday; except I thinking of a Nova. But - yeah - potentially lots of raw materials floating around (and on the planets of) a blue star.

I asked if anybody wanted to wing up and got rejected. but I'm still up for it if anybody else is. PM me if interested. gets kinda lonely in space lol

Well the alloys are their shell. Just like that of corals. Obviously.
If these barnacles are like water organisms the UAs could be their larvae.
Barnacle larvae are settling near old barnacles where they build their typical shell.
So but what if they are not pointing towards Merope? Maybe away from Merope and the UA shell is just the distance they reached since hatching. So maybe we draw a line from Merope through the shell systems to the next nebula and search there.

An UA found anywhere points its bulbous end at Merope. That same UA taken and dropped anywhere else will still point its bulbous end at Merope. So UAs are not pointing away from Merope to anywhere else specific, or they would keep pointing their other end towards that place when moved. They may be going away from Merope, but they don't have a specific destination. The only constant is Merope.

The Galmap only filters by the primary star doesn't it? Brown dwarves are fairly rare as primaries but they're quite common in binary (and higher count) systems. They're also not unusual as satellites of other stars; I've seen systems where a class O or B has several brown dwarf satellites (think I've seen one with more than 5).

Seconded - child Y class are reasonably common

The record currently stands at 8 Y-Class stars in one system ;)

Haven't seen this answered before, so i'll ask just to be safe. When a UA is dropped on the surface of a planet. Is the signal picked up by the SRV any different from that of a normal item such as a canister or a mineral. Is there a different radar sound? The reason I ask is that if they are potentially made as the same compounds as the Barnacle things we might be able to narrow things down?

It sounds like a canister AFAIK

If this is a repeat I am sorry, my first post disappeared into thin air. I have been searching and I found a place that is creepy and reminds me of the shot in the video. My 2 cents are get in your SRV and search, your high altitude searches wont result in much, nothing renders at that altitude. I fly at 200m. I think they key is the sounds the UA makes, we need to figure out exactly what its trying to tell us. It sounds different in the different places I have put it but I am not bothering with recording sounds and analyzing them. Here are images of my efforts in the location I am talking about. http://imgur.com/a/sZseq

Also I have been finding AI artefacts around Merope but have failed to pick one up yet (you are attacked my NCP's), but they may be involved since I have come across a few now there. I will do more research when I can.

Happy hunting.

I can't access the 172nd page of the thread for some reason. Weird.

In other news, I've been thinking about the comment 'it's logical they are in nebulae'.

This, to me at least, suggests that they need the scattered star matter in the nebula to survive. This combined with the fact that they are associated with Meta-Alloys, says they should be on metal rich bodies.

In metal rich body descriptions on system maps, such as HIP 17862-1 it says the metals are usually found frequently around areas of previous volcanic activity.

From now on for a while, I'll be looking in those lava riverbed like features on metal rich planets.
Or they could be causing nebulae to appear (by making a nearby star go supernovae). We don't know how long these barnacles have been in Pleiades - maybe long enough to eat a star, make it blow up and then travel with remnant nebula to meet with Merope and others. So we still need to look in nebulae, but it's could be just a byproduct of barnacles life cycle, not a necessary thing for them to survive.

As for metal reach planets - we don't know how much metal is there in meta-alloys. It might very well be 1/1,000,000 part of metals and other parts are all carbon. There's no point of ignoring rocky and icy ones based on ''alloy'' word.

I have just realized, that Pavlou Keep is NOT Prof. Palin's new base (stupid-stupid me).

Palin's outpost is going to be built on Maia B1BA.

Palin is FDEV's in-game story teller about the UAs.

Palin (=FDEV) said, that he wants to build this outpost to study the UAs far from inhabited space. However maybe he has a secret, other agenda: to study Meta-Alloys and Barnicles.

The best way to do that, if he is very close to them.
