UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

If the location of the barnacles has anything to do with any Earth-based mythology I'll be very annoyed. This is alien life we're looking for, after all.

Oh, internet, I suddenly don't feel like looking for barnacles anymore:

Interesting theory. What do we do with it?
I looked up barnacle in naupilus stadium. They look similar to the UAs. But the head is the head. Not around. So forget what I assumed. They do orientate towards the surface. To the sun.
So why do UAs think merope is the surface? Why is it the only sun they see?

Guys is it normal to get mass locked at 20+ km altitude ? If I go down I lose the lock, and if I go back up the lock comes back...

Normal ???

This seems like normal behavior. I've had this happen on various planets. There is sort of a sweet spot between too low and too high to enter SC.

Don't know about the exact distance but yeah, if you take off from the surface you leave mass lock at about 2.5 Km then have a bit of time to SC/High wake out and then back in mass lock! Doesn't make much sense but it is normal in game.

Yup, there's a mass lock based on the surface and another one based on the forced drop from orbital cruise altitude - DRP on the altitude indicator.

I haven't paid much attention to it, but it sounds normal. You get mass-locked by the planet, but there's a range where you need to be able to jump to Supercruise. On the surface, you're mass-locked up to around 2km, at which point you can Supercruise to get into Orbital Cruise.

Ok thanks ;)

Never realized you'd get mass locked after 20km+.

I thought I could have entered some Barnacle related field force :/ ....

B1A1 btw ;)

Sorry for asking, is it possible to turn 'off' the screens inside the ship and in the SRV? If you want to look around to spot something, they always plopping off.....

Debug camera is a nice way to look around - I have bind it to F1 and can switch it fast on/off.

Wait... pull out of SC and mass locked at 22km ..... investigating..

EDIT : Guys I don't want to look like a noob but is it normal to be mass locked at 20+ km ?

If I go down, I lose the mass lock so it's weird..

There are more mass-lock reagions afaik. One is below 2km, the other is around the OC/orbital cruise exit (25km). Not sure about any other regions...?

Maybe the Earth-based mythology originated from alien contact...

yes Earth-based mythology I have no problem with, I mean the UA's do appear to be trying to communicate with us, it's possible if they know about humanity they might pick clues any human with knowledge of ancient-earth history could discover. If the barnacles are indeed related to the UA's they may perhaps be trying to hide from one alien race while attempting to get our attention in order to save them.
And here we are only thinking about what resources we can extract by shooting them! Typical humans.

Theory: It seems a bit hopeless to search moons and planets with no direction other than "Pleiades". Even if you narrow the search down to low lying craters and canyons that have vapor fogs it is a ridiculous amount of area to cover.

Maybe there are special Unidentified Signal Sources in systems that could potentially harbor Barnacles and Meta-Alloys... and if so there could be NPC's in the USS's that have dialogue related to potential locations for the Barnacles and Meta-Alloys.

I started looking for some in Maia this morning but, no luck.

Has anyone been attempting this? Red herring?

Who was Pavlou and why does he have a 'keep'? - Not sure I've seen any other 'keeps' as surface installations elsewhere.

If he's this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stel_Pavlou, he's written a sci-fi novel about drilling up a new material in the Antarctic, linked to ancient sites & an unstable sun. Bit of a long shot - but we are into long-shot territory, I reckon.

Whatever the case, Pavlou Keep is pretty well defended; a couple of missile-firing guardians and several sentries with better than usual hull strength. Took out my SRV pretty fast, despite pimped up hull & ammo (but I'm not a very good shot). But from 300m distance, it looks an unusual installation. Anyone got inside it to have a search for clues?

I just got in today. Nothing special, although if you stand on one of the hatches there is weird sound, seeming to come from below. Couldn't make anything of it. The Turrets and guards are easy prey for a ship, even my asp could take it.

I noticed that in surface flight, the ship slows to a halt when you switch to debug cam, which is different behaviour than in space.
I was trying to cruise at about 2km and have a good look around and after a while I realised I wasn't moving.

I could probably change FA Off to toggle instead of hold and try that but... gravity!!

That's it! Egypt mythology! You are right!

ahahaha, indeed!

Sure there's no Taygeta? I'm not there to check but see if you spelled it right first (a on end not e) and failing that search for HIP 17531 and see what pops up.

I had no clue, thx for the info.

I'll join you in an hour. As it should be fixed poi how about we keep each-other updated...

sure why not im at Alcyone right now.
